DID reader Endre Lunde drew our attention to an article that was published March 1, 2006 on the official web-site of the Norwegian military. The article is in Norwegian, but Mr. Lunde helps by explaining:

"It is reporting from a recent visit by representatives of the Norwegian MoD and key figures of the RNoAF to the Lockheed Martin JSF research plant. In this article, as it reads, the secretary of state of the ministry of defense (equals deputy minister) states that if there are no signs of improved industrial relations between Lockheed Martin and the Norwegian defense industry by the time the next partnership-payment is due, Norway will resign its JSF partnership. This payment, due in June, amounts to roughly 18 million US dollars. It is said, however, that a notice of intention to withdraw must be posted by April. This means, that if there are no new contracts or general improvement of relations within two months, Norway might just be withdrawing from the JSF development project."

Norway is a Tier 3 JSF consortium member who joined on June 20, 2002 with a $125 million contribution.

I hope not...We should continue to see the US as our main ally, not France/Germany. Even if we're all NATO partners. I can't see us seriously leaving the JSF program.

If the Norwegian governent sees no real gain from the JSF (technological know-how), then it will opt the other two options.

And a hint: EADS will offer you access to Eurocopter, Airbus, Astrium etc., the same like what they are offering to Greece.

And Sweden, well... everything! Now that SAAB is seeking potential customers... Mind that a Norwegian purchase of Gripen will have an effect on the Danish procurement.

Who knows... Viggen's revenge :)

well if Norway leave the F35, I don't think they are forced to declare war on the US you know ? I don't see how it could change Norway's alliance with the US except that Norway would be a little more independant so more respected.

Among them Greece, don't know if you've heard the latest news yet. ;) From the impression I got it looks like they're interested in running a mix of Eurofighters and Gripens, but I could have misunderstood.

 I know... they even built a site in Greek :)
Since it is politics, no no... Maybe in the future, with the scenario that JSF will br cancelled... (Lockheed offered
us Tier 3participation, but we rejected the deal)

HAF JAS-39 Super Gripen, with EJ230 and CFTs... you never know :)

Nah I meant the latest news.

A Greek delegation visited Gripen International in Linköping on Tuesday, where they among other things got to test-fly a JAS 39. They were there to discuss a possible contract for around 40 planes.

You norwegians could just sell some of yours stocks in oil and buy the whole Gripen consortium. That way you could call your next fighter "norwegian".

Nah, just dependant on another set of masters, in this case a cross national consortium of them if going for the Eurofighter deal

whats the differences between the convential version and carrier version? I can think of folding wings, arrestor hook...what else?

and which version is the Royal navy buying? the VTOL or carrier version?

Ezekial really answered your question with his link, but two things people don't pick out right away is that the carrier version has more wing area, and does not have a gun. The Conventional F-35 has a 25mm internal gun.

Navy and Marine STOVL will not carry one unless external in a pod.
