Second soldier dies after Afghan road accident
A second Canadian soldier has died of injuries suffered during a vehicle accident in Afghanistan several days ago.
The family of Master Cpl. Timothy Wilson was by his side when he passed away at a U.S.-run hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, the Canadian Armed Forces said in news conference Sunday in Kandahar.
The organs of Wilson -- who is from Grande Prairie, Alta. -- will be donated, the military said.
Cpl. Paul Davis of Bridgewater, N.S., also died in the accident, which occurred Thursday when a LAV-III light armoured vehicle crashed into a taxi near Kandahar and flipped.
Five others, including Wilson, were injured in the accident; however, Wilson was considered the most seriously injured.
Two other soldiers were also sent to Landstuhl for medical care after the accident:
Pte. Miguel Chavez, originally of El Salvador; and
Sgt. Darren Haggerty of London, Ont.The other three wounded soldiers were:
Pte. Nathan Justice of Dauphin, Man.;
Pte. Mark Taylor of Prince Rupert, B.C.; and
Pte. Thomas Wong of Edmonton, Alta.Wilson's death ended a grim week in Afghanistan for Canadian troops.
Besides the accident, there were four attacks on Canadian troops.
On Saturday, Lieut. Trevor Greene of Vancouver was critically injured after he was struck in the head with an axe during a meeting with the elders in the village of Gumbad.
Canadian and Afghan soldiers took small arms fire from other insurgents in that incident, but no one else was hurt.
A rocket attacked left one Canadian soldier slightly wounded, five were hurt in a suicide bombing and another ambush with rocket-propelled grenades, small arms and a roadside bomb caused no injuries.
