Figured it would have more blast/shrapnel damage if it were a missle hit.

Definately has. I mean, if the engine had blown up, I doubt it would've at the nozzle and afterburner. In the supercharger or combustion chamber. That would've caused some leakage and smut on the plane, which doesn'r show.
You know where this was taken?

It could very well be a missile hit. The engine looks perfectly fine..such damage to fusilage could only happen if the hi-pressure turbine goes kabooom!. Only the nozzle is ripped off here and my guess is exhaust nozzles dont fall of by them selves..

So this happened in Chechnya? Or was it friendly fire?

Oh okay. Then since Chechnya is here:

It couldn't possibly have been due to enemy fire right?

Who the hell would be shooting at them in the Far East? Got some angry SAM-guys around Vladivostok or something?

probably some pilots were goofing off with each other

That would have to be a very small missile that has a hit to kill capability and a very small warhead that literally flew up the tailpipe.

Most SAM and AAM use a fragmentation warhead proximity fused - no damage to any of the tail control surfaces suggests this was simply a engine blow out - maybe injested a large bird? Probably just mechanical failiure - it happens...

I would actually go the other direction and say that this was definitely NOT a missile that caused this damage. If I had to guess (and that is all we're really doing at this point) I'd say that the engine failed structurally, and it destroyed itself.

Yep that would be the case. Too little damaged to have been anything other than an engine failure.

No sign of shrapnel damage, so it's definitely NOT a missile hit.

backfire from NOS :)

I tend to agree with the folks who sway towards a less sinister explaniation

If I had to guess, I would say that the engine exploded at the rear, there was maybe fire too (lots of fire)
This was no missile because if it was then the airplane would have been definitely shot down and blown to small pieces like this....

All missiles don't explode dead on target, but on the side or some metres away from it. I say it got to the jet blast and blew up for some reason. The explosion tore off the nozzle and some plates from the fins/rear of the plane.

I was watching "Iron Eagle" last night and that's not what I saw.
