Students To Protest UNC's Reluctance To Label Pit Incident Terrorism
March 6, 2006
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Protests are planned for Monday in the same area of campus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where, authorities said, a former student plowed a sport utility vehicle into nine people Friday afternoon.
The College Republicans, Americans for an Informed Democracy and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies are sponsoring the event, scheduled for 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday in "The Pit," a central area of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
Police said Mohammad Taheri-azar, a 2005 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, admits he acted to "avenge the death of Muslims around the world." UNC police and local authorities, however, say they have not taken a stance on that interpretation, but are simply repeating what the suspect has told them.
UNC-Chapel Hill student leaders said that Monday's protest is aimed at the reluctance of the university to label Friday's incident as an act of terrorism.
"This is innocent people being attacked by an SUV, driven by a man who was doing it for retaliation for treatment of Muslims around the world," said Jillian Bandes, with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. "To me, that spells terrorism."
Taheri-azar, who is currently in Raleigh's Central Prison under a $5.5 million bond, is charged with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.
Because of what Taheri-azar admitted to local authorities, the FBI is also participating in the investigation. FBI spokesman Ken Lucas said Sunday, however, that a federal investigation is still ongoing.
But were Taheri-azar's alleged actions acts of terrorism?
"I think (what Taheri-azar did) is extreme," said Dan VanAtta, a friend of the suspect. "But then again, I don't know what was going through his head. … Mohammed was a good guy."
David Schanzer, the director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill, said it is fine for students to voice their dismay, but that they should be cautious.
"(They should) understand the roots of it and understand the strategies for addressing it in a constructive way," Schanzer said.
He takes the same position as officials at the Islamic Center of Raleigh, who have publicly stated that they do not condone the incident: authorities should decide how Friday's incident will be classified, and that the investigation should run its due course.
"Whether or not the FBI decides to charge this individual with a crime of terrorism, I think it was a terroristic act," Schanzer said.

I am not really surprised that the UNC has refused to label the incident as an act of terror after all the guy has not long been charged for the crime and the full facts will never be known until the trial.

Come on, forget those silly things like "American Justice" and "innocent till proven guilty" and "court".
The dude is guilty and should be hung from a lamp post like negroes accused of rape by white women in 40s.

I agree. I have a lot of friends at Chapel Hill, so this kinda strikes home. Obviously this was a terrorist act for what he said. Send his b*tch *ss to Guantanamo Bay and treat him like a terrorist if he wants to be one so bad.

Well I feel like a dumbass, no way to come out on top of this one. But I really do believe he is guilty of this, and he should be tried as a terrorist. My previous statement stands.

The purposeful attacks on civilians for political or religious reasons isn't terrorism anymore?

Sweet! When I went to school there, we “non-leftists” were forced to keep our heads down what with all the threats we’d receive if we ever dared to speak our opinion. It used to be that even a rumor of an organized “non-leftist” event provoked all sorts of screaming, yelling, threats and assorted minor acts of physical violence to crush ones right to speak out disagreement.
When I attended, the pit was a leftist bastion, any attempt by a non-leftist/non-radical to assemble and practice a civil soap box debate or simply gather always resulted in the sh*t hitting the fan.
I guess it’s still pretty much the same with Mr. Taheri-azar desiring to kick up the oppression a notch and actually try to kill someone.
I applaud the College Republicans, the AID and FDD for there bravery in attempting to engage in civil non-leftist/radical public discussion in the pit. Any fight against the Fascism and hypocrisy that is so pervasive in the UNC system and student body is a worthy cause.
Years after attending that hole, I had to go do some recruitment there. The CIA was there that same week. Dear lord what a circus that was.
I really loved the comment from Jesse Helms that we should wall up Chapel Hill to protect everyone from the loonies in there.

Of course not. To call them terrorists would hurt their feelings.

"I'm thankful you're here to give me this trial to learn more about the will of Allah, the creator and the merciful,"
As news reporters shouted questions at him about representing himself, Taheri-Azar replied, "Allah is my lawyer."
"thankful for the opportunity to spread the will of Allah."
"avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world."
"The truth is my lawyer."
Just sayin' - let's not confuse guilt with a verdict. This guy is guilty by his own admission. We have to go through the motions of course, but I'm pretty comfortable using good old common sense to feel this one out for myself. If I watch a tiger eat a baby, I don't need to wait for the coroner's report to retell the story.
If this had been a white guy plowing through a crowd of black students, the words "hate crime" would have been on the lips of the school administrators before you could say "alternate curriculum". This is a hate crime, and a terror attack, pure and simple, and it's appalling that the school is content to wallow in such shameful PC kowtowing.

Problem is, UNCCH is full of PC cretin...just waiting for their chance to politically correct someone. This doesn't surprise me at all. Yes it is wrong that they won't admit it, but it doesn't surprise me.

Now now 2shed. Some of us *cough*Liberals*cough* do not believe that common sense should be considered as evidence. For example, if I saw a 37 y/o guy having *** with a 14 y/o girl in a very aggressive manner, it does not mean he was raping her. Even though she may be screaming for help, it does not mean anything. It may have been her first time, that's all. It doesn't matter if he was hitting her either. She could've been a masochist.
Just like how this guy allegedly ran over a bunch of students. He could be innocent. For all we know, he could've been brainwashed by the Mossad and forced to have *** with penquins all day. This has Jewish conspiracy written all over it!
DEATH TO THE PENQUINS! ALLLLLLLLLLAAAAAHHHH!
LARGE SARCASM TAG.

You see the problem with your logic is hate crimes are only committed by whites, every thing else is just victims rebelling against a racist society.
