Op het Columbusplein komt het monument bij de basisschool Dr. J. Th. De Visser te staan. De school heeft het monument geadopteerd. Het huidige kruis met daarop de tekst Aan hen die vielen, moet wijken vanwege bouwwerkzaamheden voor de nieuwe Westermoskee, woningen en bedrijfsruimten. Het was de bedoeling dat het monument wel in het gebied zou terugkeren. Op veel plaatsen in het land zijn kort na de oorlog witte herdednkinkingskruisen opgericht.
Bezwaar
Toen een tijdelijke verhuizing van het monument aan de orde kwam in het 4/5 mei-comité De Baarsjes bleek vanuit de Pakistaanse moskee er bezwaar te zijn tegen het kruis, vanwege de christelijke connotatie. Een opvatting die vanuit de Marokkaanse en Turkse moskee werd gedeeld. Een Joodse participant in het 4/5 meicomité sloot zich bij het pleidooi voor een geheel nieuw ontwerp aan.
