Nice pics - so many variants, I'm suprised they don't make a convertable (that's a cabriolet for you Euro-types).

I had no idea it was so much smaller than an Abrams...

anyone shed some light on the big attachments on the back of the turrent on some variants?

On some it looks like an optics/sensors mast of sorts and on some theres that bigass tube...atgm in there?

To bad they both have about the same ammount of firepower ;)

No, actually 125mm has higher HE effect and longer range plus it can fire AT-11! :D

If you refer to this:

http://www.aeronautics.ru/archive/armored_vehicles/tank/T80UM_2.jpg

Then this mast part of the Arena defense system. This system intercepts ATGMs by firing a fragmentation round towards it. They say it's quite effective.

Well the 125mm on the T-72 didnt have the power of the German 120mm on the Abrams and Leo ;)

"On some it looks like an optics/sensors mast of sorts and on some theres that bigass tube...atgm in there?"

Nope...the 'bigass tube' is for river fording. The optic/sensor mast is for their anti-atgm system. I think it is called 'arena'

That's because the Iraqi's 125 shells were way less superior than the ones used by the russian army. The Iraqi's had AP shells with conventional steel core penetrators. The russian APFSDS shells have titanium dart penetrators. :P

I thought the Russians had Tungsten penetrators on their newest SABOTs.

Yeah they use tungsten in their sabots but titanium are still being used from old Red Army stocks. I guess they went to expend those babies first so they don't make clutter! :)

The only use of Titanium I have ever heard of for use in high velocity armour piercing ammo is as a cap for capped rounds. Titanium is very strong but not very heavy. Tungsten and Depleted Uranium are used because of their high density.

Never heard of using Titanium as a Penetrtator! It has low weight and is only nearly as hard as Steel. Steel would be better than Titanium by far. I heard they use either Tungsten or Uranium.

Titanium is strong and hard but also very light and very heat resistant.

It has been used in the tips of AP rounds to make them stronger... a hardened steel penetrator hitting a steel target there is a fairly high chance it might shatter on impact. Having a tip that is made of a different material that is harder greatly reduces the likelyhood that the penetrator will shatter on impact. ie APC-T rounds are armour piercing capped - tracer rounds allow mild steel to be used with a very hard strong material used for its tip. As long as the tip is very hard the rest of the penetrator just provides the mass to push the tip through the armour.

That is why hunting rounds are lead tipped and armour piercing rounds have hardened tips or tips made of different material.
