Well, the Soviets never deployed them in support of the DRA if thats what you mean.

You don't need a first rate battle tank for Afganistan - thats why they never sent them. The T-72's were all left elsewhere that were more important.

i heard this as well in a "fields of armor" documentary on the history channel. supposedly the t72 suspension is more geared to soft soil rather than rocky surfaces so they kept busting tracks so the t62 was used instead. ill try to post a clip.

That's the Military Channel, mate.
i saw it back in the day before military channel existed, the "fields of armor" series was shown initially on discovery channel and then on history channel in the early 90's

here is a clip from a recent rebroadcast of the afghanistan episode mentioning the problems with the t72
