In a First, Iraq Executes 13 Insurgents
By SINAN SALAHEDDIN
Associated Press Writer
Iraq hanged 13 insurgents Thursday, marking the first time militants have been executed in the country since the U.S.-led invasion ousted Saddam Hussein nearly three years ago, the government said.

The Cabinet announcement listed the name of only one of those hanged, Shukair Farid, a former policeman in the northern city of Mosul, who allegedly confessed that he had worked with Syrian foreign fighters to enlist fellow Iraqis to carry out assassinations against police and civilians.

'The competent authorities have today carried out the death sentences of 13 terrorists,' the Cabinet said.

It said Farid had 'confessed that foreign fighters recruited him to spread the fear through killings and abductions.'

What can I say? It sure is good news!

What I don't understand is why our own country is being so soft on these insurgents when they are captured. We punish people who conduct even a little bit of harm when they (the insurgents) are not even legal combants and have no rights under the GC. And more often the not they chop the heads off our guys when they capture them! I wish the goverment would stop worrying about terrorist rights and start thinking more about the lives of our brave men and women in uniform.

tell that to the Gitmo support group crowd. I would be all for it if they are proven 100% to have committed crimes and be members of a known terror group. The problem with mass executions like these is that theres a big chance that innocent people can get caught up in that due to a public hysteria and broad support for these executions

The reason the US is being so "easy" on them, is because part of turning over control, is allowing them to police themselves.

They're in Iraq, they're Iraqi's........the US has no control over the Iraqi Judicial system..............what are you suggesting......executing them before the Iraqi Justice punishes it's own citizens?

I see, I think we should had the captured insurgents over to Iraqis and let them deal with them :D I just hope they will be harsher on them than we are. And from the looks of thing my wish has been granted.

were the executions public or otherwise?

I think saddam should be strung up where his statue once stood for all to see.

dip him in bronze and mount him in the same place. The humor alone would be worth it.

Rule of Law is important in any country. It is necessary for political stability. Lynching undermines that.

I completely agree, they get more rights then our own military does.

"Lawful" authorities proped up by an occupying power. I see some irony here.
These "lawful authorities" will be the next ones hanging once the US leaves the country.

the US has no control over the Iraqi Judicial system

Are you serious when you say that? And which judicial system are you talking about? The Iraqi judiciary and law enforcement, if we can call them that, are at the service of secterian factions who are busy slaughtering eachtoher. The executed Iraqis might very well be Sunnis executed by Shias or vice versa.

The country is fvcked up. Don't get me wrong, it was fvcked up already long before the arrival of US troops. But it's even more fvcked up now.

And you guys sitting here rejoicing at the news that some Iraqis have been hanged by other Iraqis shows how funny the situations just got.

If you ask me every insurgent no mater in what conutry we are talking about that is carring attacks on civilians especialy women and children shoud have a trial then after his guilty is proved. Bullet in the head then he shoud be cremated and dispersed in the wind.
