I'm looking for more than the common "Special Forces / SEALS wear whatever they think appropriate for the mission" disclaimer.

For example: What have you been taught to understand about fins, masks, etc. for specific jobs and duties?

Are certain military orders for equipment based on more than basic design (stiff fins for loads vs. fast fins for lighter troops)?

And anything else that wouldn't be common dive knowledge - or just neat to know.

Thanks!

There's a SEAL on this board, Matchanu. You could try PMing him to see if he'd like to contribute. Save you some time.

We've always dove Jet fins. They're freaking stiff as a board, but if you've got leg muscles, you can really move underwater. They're even better if you replace the hard rubber strap with a spring strap.

During my time as a "Frog Man" we used US Divers or IDA Rocket fins.. They work very well and have enough room to accomidate jungle boots etc... Also when finning use your hip flexors as if you use legs alone you will freeking be smoked before you get to your target.
Masks were kind of a off the shelf buy for most of us. Just getting a mask that fits is a good start. Hold it to your face push and if it sticks with no straps its a winner/ Just how I used to pick. Also you used to see alot of guys tape or paint a masks edges as a neon colors are very popular with civi divers..

I left my Rocket fins with a boat operator in Costa Rica. The %$#%% things were heavy as sin. It is most assured if you lose one it will sink and not be found by the enemy.
