Abrams Tank Question

Well, this question has been on my mind for some time, I'm not in the American military, so I was always confused when I saw Coalition tanks with a chevron on the side of it, chevron in question is similar to the one below, I'm just curious what it is for as some pictures of Abrams have it and others don't.

My best guess is a shortage in supplies. We can't seem to caugh up enough body armor.

Could be wrong, but believe it's an ID system that can be seen through NV devices...

Its used to mark what Company that vehicle is from, I believe. Im not sure, I have been out of boot for awhile.

Its to identify the tank within the unit. Different companies would have different chevrons (IE Ones with the tip pointing left, right, and straight up).

ShakesFIST is right. Its all coming back to me. The little dots in the chevron identify the what Tank it is in the platoon.

The chevron markings denotes what platoon the tank belongs to. Chevron pointing up ^; 1st Platoon, chevron right >; 2nd Platoon, chevron down V; 3rd Platoon, and chevron pointing left <; 4th Platoon. I think the dots and the barrel stripes belongs to what company (A,B,C..).
