Now being retired (except for a few R/RB/RBTs and BMs), this was and still is one of the biggest and most powerful fighter aircraft to enter service any where in the world. One mighty piece of war machinery...

Is this a picture of the one that defected to Japan in '76?

Exactly. If I remember, Viktor Belenko in 1976 (?). The plane was dismantled by the Western engineers for study and later shipped back to the USSR.

One interesting fact is that the sudden appearance of the Mig 25 in the late 60s led to the panic rush of designing the F-15. At that time, the best Western fighter was the F-4E Phantom II that was unable to intercept the Mig 25 at high speed and altitude.

Technically speaking Mig 25 is not a fighter but an interseptor.
It was designed with XB-70 in mind. XB got canceled and Mig went into production.

Had they installed more modern equipment on them things they could have truly given the F-15 a run for its money.

But the avionics werent any better than the MiG-21.

Really nice plane with amazing capabilities !

Russian Pilots are known for selling the coolant of the plane to make some money. ( The coolant is "pure" alcohol )

Wasn't Mig-25 designed as high-altitude, long-range standoff interceptor for intercontinental bombers, ex. B-52,B-1.
They flew if I remember at something like 60,000 feet, that's why pilot looks like astronaut! :)

Without the pressure suit an ejection at high altitude would have been fatal.

Max heights for Mig-25s was about 80,000 ft, though the Mig-25 holds the world height record of 123,000ft. The SR-71 (the only other regular jet engined aircraft that is comparable) can't zoom climb due to its design and cannot be used to get altitude records.

Russian Pilots are known for selling the coolant of the plane to make some money.

It was known as Gastronome (spelling) meaning resturant because of all the alcohol it used. There were claims in the west that the alcohol was sold, but the reality was that it was more likely drunk by the crews than sold by them.
