What if Hitler had managed to capture Moscow during the winter of 1941. Would the Soviet Union had collapsed. Discuss

Ah, Another WI. If Hitler had taken Moscow it would have been a huge moral blow for the Red Army. If Stalin was captured or killed it would be a massive step foward to victory. I think that the Germans could kept moving supplies for the troops in Moscow. And in summer they would have launched a massive offensive until they reached the Urals. They could not take all of the USSR. But the Urals would be good enough. seeing as how most of the USSR population is west of the Urals.

Remember what happened to the Army later at Stalingrad? ;-)
I'll let Lokos discuss this on my part ;)

How do you capture a city when your weapons do not function?

Well, if the Serbian public hadn't turned out en masse to protest the pact that the Yugoslav government signed with the Axis in March 1941, Hitler wouldn't have had to commit a lot of troops to the Balkans and he might have captured Moscow before winter of 1941. Instead, he had to delay the attack on Soviet Union.

Read "The Moscow Option". Pretty much tells you what would have happened, at least in the author's opinion.
All these "ifs" threads are nuts..
But it is a really good question. Some people think that Moscow in 1941 would have had that importance, some think it would not.
We'll never now.

But sadly we are always forgotten :-(
I don't think it would have mattered greatly, it might have been a morale blow but in the long run I don't think Moscow was that strategic militarily.

Well, capturing it certainly would not have hurt the Wehrmacht's efforts. I think the war was lost after Moscow when Hitler took over as CIC.

I would strongly recomend anybody to not read the book - the Author does not support a single one of the "Options" with any logistical, strategical or even common sense explanations. Basically, the author retells the plans of Hitler and OKW to capture Soviet Union up to the Urals, wipe out Northern Afrika and enter Middle East as if it happened - there is not a single explanation to how any of those would have been possible. To make it worse, it uses a very general language and no specific knowledge can be gained from this book - it's a slither thick small hardcover with large font - I've seen Graphic Novels have more words than that stupid book.
Kind of like the Author's take on "Sea Lion" - it just happens! No mention that the plan of the operation, as flawed as it was, largely relied on overestimated strength of transports and their capability! Book spends all of its pages on telling how the conquest of the Island was taking place but no real thought to how the Axis got on the island!

What's the variable that allows for the German capture of Moscow, in this case?

Maybe full war mobilization from 1939. Moscow was logistical hub and important for morale. But would it made difference and change outcome of the war? Was Moscow that important?

Sort of like all the doom and gloom History channel, etc. shows on "Nazi Mega-Super-Killer-Secret-Weapons that would have won if the war was still being fought in 1946".
Meanwhile they forget to mention that the US was building various advanced aircraft, etc. as well.
As for the Moscow option, if they had taken Moscow it would have given the German army a strong defensive hub that they lacked throughout the winter. They would have been able to fortify and strengthen their position and this would have allowed support for other operations on Leningrad and Stalingrad.

It could have decided WWII on the East front, but to long logistic lines, too short one manpower.
