The situation here is crazy. After 20 criminals broke into an army logistics base and stole 10 Fals troops (1,600) started occupying some 10 different communities which are ruled by criminals. The army decided to keep the pressure until the criminals give up their weapons. This means they surround these communities preventing people from going in there to buy drugs. A police estimate showed that drug dealers are losing about 1 milion a day with this.
The drug dealers on the other hand are going crazy since they can´t butt heads with the troops. What worries me is that their tactics are getting more and more desperate.
The media reported a police intercept that showed criminals were forcing people to go on the streets and protest (very small groups).
The incident in this video is what prompted the army to bring Riot troops into this community.

It's a good thing that they've sent in the army and locked the gangsters in their favelas. Nothing hurts them more than loosing their drug profits! Unfourtunately the innocent civilians are hurt too.:-(

We cant forget that most of the druglords have recruited Special Forces to train their men, and many of these soldiers works for them now. Thats very sad... but true. So the police in rio is not dealing with regular criminals, those have guerrila and urban warfare training, so the army should never pull back until they put everything under control, with a major joint task force, including the federal police and the local police.

LOL...I just found out that the "chubby" soldier in the first video that started shooting was in fact a LTC. You can see him at the end of the video to.
According to Bandnews protesters were getting violent and even pushed the soldiers. Since they did not have non-lethal weapons that was the only option to break the protest.

Jesus, reminds me of Beirut. I read an article in Maxim how the drug dealers and other unsavory characters actually have their own militias or armed gangs, carrying anything from AK-47's to FN MAGS to LAW's and AT4's. Is this an over exaggeration or is this something documented?

Hey mate some places are so dangerous martial law would accomplish alot. The soft touch approach isn't working.
Some years ago they asked a high ranking government official in California what it would take to solve the massive gang problem there. He said something along the lines of 'send in the national guard'. He was being serious too.
There are places in New York, and L.A and Detroit that might as well be warzones.
One day it will either come down to abandoning these places altogether for the scumbags to own, or taking serious measures to physically make them safe above and beyond the poor handicapped cops.

I can't speak for those other cities but my own. NYC isn't what you think, you don't see people walking around with AK's holding their corners down for their own, ect. This is not a ghetto in Brazil or mogadishu. We don't have "gang" problems here, that's more L.A, perhaps Houston, ect.

Talk about overkill......
Ok wise one....again how will this make ANYTHING better? Other than killing a whole pile of people, all you are going to do is further alienate a community that already feels that the odds are stacked against them. How pointless is it to run an op but not address the fundamental problems that cause the place to be bad in the first place?
What do you think will happen in the favellas of Rio when the military gets it's pound of flesh and leaves? It will be business as usual.
Also keep this in mind, the longer the army stays in an op like this the more friction generated with the local populace. And while you may say so what...remember uprisings start that way. Sending in the troops will open a can of worms no one wants to contemplate. I'd say the Brazillian army ought to tread lightly..the favella's are a potiential powder keg.

LOL not a one....I have been all over the place..some of the worst neighborhoods in the country...Overtown, Liberty city in Miami, down in the wards in Houston and NO, the South Bronx, and no where have I seen anything that could be labeled as a warzone.
Mind you these are rough areas but no where as bad as the favellas.
That video is scary, those brazillian troops look like they are almost out of control. Wait till bodies of 'drug dealers' start to pop up in the streets every morning, and people start to dissapear. I can see it going to hell on the express elevator.

Ineed, indeed, good sir. I mean, lol, people think that the cities in the U.S are similar to that! I mean, they imagine stopping on every street corner and paying a 20$ toll to gang members just to get to the next street or they would get shot. They also imagine a few angry dudes patrolling the streets in some U.S city with RPG's an AK's. motherfuccas these days play to much games or watch to much MOVIES these days, I tell ya. BAHA!

It is the second one. Actually, back in the 1990's I thought New York was a 5hity situation, but when my uncle went there in 1998 he said "it is the movies that make New York *aggressive* but it isn't". I guess Rudolf Giuliani made a good work while a mayor to get rid of tthe bordellos ;)

We have crime here and there but one must remember, this is America's biggest city, very impossible for such a huge city to be crimeless like that city from Judge Dread. :)

Oh yeah, no doubt. NYC isn't on the top of the list when it comes to crime in America. No out of control "gangs" like there is in those Favelas or the streets of Mogadishu, stereotypically speaking.

But , unfortunately, you are no wrong. Narco-gangs in Rio de Janeiro , only there, in this late years have been acquiring moderm AT-4 launchers , 6 of them were aphreended in the last 3 years. The main cause of this is the use of armored cars by the Rio de Janeiro´s police against gangs, the APC is called "CAVEIRÃO" or "BIG SKULL" it´s feared by gangs and the civil population, that most of the time is cought between the firefight.

Score 1 for our army, except for the poor guy who shot himself in the foot.
PS: for the foreigners, is worthwhile to note that many manifestations carried by the people living in these "favelas" are organized by the drug dealers controlling the place, some sort of enemy propaganda.
No police in the brazil ?
Yes there is, but they´re ineficient compared to the army, and the gangs don´t fear the police, because they know the police has to give the "Prison order"; the army doesn´t, if the army sees a gangster holding a gun he can just shoot him to death and fill in some reports.
