Putin has got to be one of the coolest dressed "presidents" out there.
I guess being a former KGB associate means he's not afraid of a show of force from his PPOs.

Considering he's got Chechen extremists to worry about, I'd want that much protection too.

The United States Secret Service is a United States federal government law enforcement agency that is part of the United States Department of Homeland Security (prior to the founding of that department in 2003, it was under the United States Department of the Treasury).
Role
Secret Service Special Agents (foreground) protect the President of the United States.
Secret Service countersniper team
Secret Service White House policeThe Secret Service has primary jurisdiction over the prevention of counterfeiting of U.S. currency and U.S. treasury bonds and notes, and protection of the President, Vice President, their immediate families, other high ranking government officials, past presidents and their spouses, certain candidates for the offices of President and Vice President, and visiting foreign heads of state and government (all called "protectees"). It also investigates a wide variety of financial fraud crimes and identity theft and provides forensics assistance for some local crimes.
Appearance
Plainclothes agents of the Secret Service wear attire that is appropriate for the surroundings. In most circumstances, this means a conservative business suit. Photographs often show them wearing sunglasses and a communication earpiece. The attire for members of the Uniformed Division includes police dress uniforms for White House guards, police work uniforms for investigative officers, and work clothes and identification vests for members of the countersniper team.
The Secret Service has over 5,000 employees: 2,100 special agents, 1,200 Uniformed Division employees, and 1,700 technical and administrative employees. Special agents either serve as bodyguards for public officials or investigate financial fraud.
Kinda odd that the Secret Service deals with counterfeiting and other matters relating to money but it was the agency was created first to combat counterfeiting. It was only after about 40 years that they started to provide presidential protection.

Sharpshooters will be positioned along the path used by the presidential motorcade while the windows of buildings along Pennsylvania Avenue -- the White House's address -- will be shut. Public buildings will close and access will be controled. Some 6,000 security officers, including Secret Service members and Washington police, will be mobilized, with bomb-sniffing dogs at check points. Devices will be installed to detect possible chemical, biological or radiological attacks. The Coast Guard will patrol the Potomac river while the Air Force will patrol the skies. Concrete barriers have been installed along three streets to prevent possible car bomb attacks aimed at disrupting a parade that will include 10,000 people. The half-million people expected to attend the ceremony will have to go through searches and metal detectors. No truck deliveries will be permitted around Congress and the White House. Caterers will have to stock their provisions in the city on the eve of the event. Two metro stations close to the ceremony's official route will be closed. I attended an open air event that President Bush was a speaker at. It was in a down town area. The Secret Service had rings of security and barriers several blocks out, with 5ton trucks parked across streets at the furthest reaches, and then foot traffic was herded into an specific path that had to pass thru metal detectors to get to the viewing area. They then had more rings of counter snipers and fast reaction crews around the area, with the plains cloths agents up close and on the crowd. The local police force was also brought in to help with security, for instance some officers where put over man holes and such to watch the entire time. They also had a chopper overhead the entire time providing an eye in the sky. I got to sit right in the front and got some excellent pics of the President and the First Lady. When the event was over the president was back in the limo and headed to the airport. Before we could reach the outer most levels of security, we saw Air Force 1 up in the sky - awsome.

i think it was because they were trusted with al the countries secrets when they were started
The USSS is called the 'Secret Service' because of its original role when it was established in 1865. After the Civil War there was a tremendous amount of counterfeit money floating around the country. At the time of it's formation, the Service only had a few select Agents, and because their names were kept a secret, they were dubbed the Secret Service. This was long before they also took on their protective role.

First visit their website: http://www.ustreas.gov/usss/ and then visit www.usajobs.com and search under Department of Homeland Security- US Secret Service. My advice would be to make sure you have a very clean background (not saying you don't but just in general) and this is just common sense, but be careful to not flat out lie. The biggest thing that happens to people who fail to pass the background and initial selection proceess is that they are less than truthful on the national security questionaire, i.e. there are minimal vision requirements (which are listed on their website) and sometimes people think they can get away with saying they meet the minimal requirements. If anything, the Service is really looking for people right now, Syracuse news just ran a story a few weeks ago by the Syracuse field office on how the Service is finding it harder and harder to find qualified and trustworthy people. There are positions such as your basic Criminal Investigator (Agent), Uniformed Division Officer, and other investigative positions and administrative positions. They are especially looking for people with previous military or police service.

The SS originially had nothing to do with Presidental protection. They were special ('secret') agents who hunted
down counterfeiters.
Until the creation of the Homeland Security Dept, the SS was under the Dept. of the Treasury.

First of all, it's not "former President", it's Mr. President.
Second of all, it looks like that guy has hit the Krispy Kreams and Whataburgers pretty hard. While for in disguise ops, it may be alright because you would generally think the security would be fit and muscular. But not out in the open like that. If he had to run for cover, I don't have much faith in him making it.

I went to DC over the summer with my family, as we were walking away from the White House, we noticed the snipers on the roof (bright blue sky, 2 black dots). We then went to the Capital building to see the Army band perfom, and I was amazed at the amount of security. Saw at least 7 Capital Police Officers walking around doing security, at least 2 had SOPMOD M4's and saw a few with G36's, which suprised me alot, didnt expect to see that....

Former President George Bush senior did visit Aceh. Along with Former President Clinton, he toured Banda Aceh, Piddie and Lampuk. My team was engaged in securing the second ring (first ring was the responsibility of USSS and BDS MSD). hobowithAk, First of all, the pic shown is from the visit of the father of the current President, George H. W. Bush, (41st POTUS) not Dubya (43rd POTUS). Hence, "former U.S. President."
Nata4190, what was the coolest piece of kit you saw the USSS detail bring with them? (Understand you have to follow Op Sec, but for us ordinary people, can you give us a small hint?)
It seems like there is a blank, bottomless cheque book when it comes to security for POTUS; nothing is too expensive or impossible to get. Did you see the thickness of the door for the Presidenial Limo (USA 1) a page back? Dude, It could have been a hatch on a submarine, it was so thick! FN P90's, Monster-sized Steiner Binos... Not to mention what ISN'T visible to the public, like Comms, Computers, Ammo,etc....damn!
For someone such as yourself in Dignitary Protection, it must have been quite a cool opportunity to work with the Pros of the USSS. Did you get to swap lapel pins, or anything? Are they easy-going people to work with, or do they prefer to stick together by themselves? Probably didn't get to have a beer or two with them at the time as it was in Aceh [RIP Tsunami victims :( ] but they would have had some amazing behind-the-scenes stories from their tours to share, I bet. Speaking of Presidents, how about some Indonesian Presidential Bodyguard detail pics, if possible? I used to Live in Menteng when President Suharto was still alive, and you could ALWAYS tell where Bapak Presiden lived when you went for a walk on the streets of an evening. The platoon of Polisi Militer parked out front with their sexy grey Kijang was usually the first thing to give them away... :) (slightly off topic, but of all the suburbs in DKI Jakarta, Menteng was the only one that NEVER, EVER had any power blackouts... want to guess why..? :) )
Maybe 511 or Royal Robbins will one day make you guys a batik "tactical" vest... ;)

I must say that the coolest gear would be the device that is able to triangulate sniper fire, real spiffy. Frmr Pres. Bush and Clinton actually rode around in an armoured suburban provided for by the Embassy in Jakarta. As for the USSS and BDS, they were realy friendly guys, given that I did spend some time at FLETC and one of the guys at that detail was in the same graduating class as I was. But in general USSS were very classy and we even conducted a few joint exercises outside the normal routine. The protection of the current Indonesian President is currently under the responsibility of PASPAMPRES Tim A, under the command of a Marine Col, the head honcho of all the teams is a Marine Maj.Gen. As far as our gear, PASPAMPRES probably has the best gear compared to any other unit in the military, unfortunately we are still unable to procure any 511, blackhawk, or any other western oriented "highspeed lowdrag" kind of gear. Fortunately some of the USSS guys were willing to trade some of their 511 vests with our regimantal berets.
Cheers, Caribou Kid, good to know someone that is acquainted with my neck of the woods.

The Presidential Security Unit is comprised of all three branches of the Military plus the National Police (Vehicular Escort, Vorerider). To apply for a position in this unit, one must be atleast a Sersan Dua (US equivalent is SSgt), come from a special unit from their repective branch (KOSTRAD, KOPASUS for Army, DEN BRAVO, PASKHAS from Airforce, DENJAKA, TAIFIB, KOPASAKA from Navy). Most of our officers recieve training in the US (FLETC, FBI Academy, USMC Scout Sniper School) and in Britain (Scotland Yard)

It gives you the feeling they were very close to the convoy.
The angle even makes it look as if they were slightly pressing into the convoy itself.
Multiple vehicles with lights ontop , coming up hard on your tail in a domestic halfway civilized country= dont try to merge into the convoy or invade "their" space.

True Im sure Protection in Russia is nothing like in Colombia or Africa etc.Every region has its own style.
The sequence of pics look like the Limo carrying principal was actually ahead of the SUV's, and the SUV's then moved toward the car to move it outwards from the convoy, only after the limo had already passed.

Norwegian Royal Guard, though they are a ceremonial unit they do mount a a guard on the castle with loaded rifles. Especially the escorte company are very much a part of the King's protection in a war or war-like scenario, and probably a terrorist attack.
http://www.vimenn.com/Uploads/Vi_Menn/Files/file3e47bf74991b4.jpg
The normal royal bodyguards are a independent part of Oslo Police District, other bodyguards, PM and other ministers and high profile persons, and i believe private citizens with a special need, are handled by PST (Politiets Sikkerthets Tjeneste - Police Security Service), who also handle counter-intelligence and other dutys. PST also handle security for visiting Politicians and heads of state.

Canadian bodyguards are heard but not seen. At a few Harper events this summer his security is pretty obvious, but they tend to stay out of photos and such and they tend to forgo the suit and ties for stuff even more conspicuous. They blend right in. I was standing right next to one at some event for about 15 minutes before I realized she was security, but this was when he was Leader of the Opposition so it's probably different now.

http://www.myuselessknowledge.com/joe/outback.gifOUTBACK. The code name used by U.S. Army Sergeant Stuart R. Selkirk. Outback grew up in Big Piney, Wyoming, where he developed his love for the wilderness and his survival skills. After joining the Army, he served as an intructor at both Survival School and the Jungle Warfare Training Center. He also participated in various classified missions in Central America, and may of may not have participated in clandestine operations in the Middle East. Outback was later assigned to the G.I. Joe team. Outback met up with the Joes in the Rocky Mountains, after he was dropped off six hundred miles away with a ruck sack full of new survival equipment and food to test out for the Army. When he reached the Joe convoy led by Hawk, he was asked about the food and equipment he was supposed to test. He wasn't impressed: "Sir, with all due respect, all of that crummy stuff fell apart after the first week and that freeze-dried stuff was just plain inedible...I've been living off the land, and living good!" As the convoy rolled on, the Joes were forced to fend off an attack from the new Cobra Pogo vehicle, piloted by Cobra Commander himself.
A disastrous mission into Eastern Europe led to Outback's most difficult time on the team. Along with Stalker, Quick Kick and Snow Job, he travelled to the Soviet bloc country of Borovia. The mission was top secret and they were told that the state department would disavow all knowledge of their mission if they were captured. A series of events led the Joes to be captured, with only Outback escaping into the sewers of Borovia. He was ordered to get out of the country and ask for help. Stalker stayed behind since Snow Job and Quick Kick were injured, and they were his responsibility. Outback made his way through the Borovian sewers and through the small nation, staying one step ahead of the Borovian Special Police. He barely made his escape to a friendly country bordering Borovia. The government did in fact disavow all knowledge and the three captured Joes were thrown into a Borovian gulag. When Outback made his way back to the Pit in Utah, he was met with suspicion from some of the other Joes, who wondered how he got out while his buddies were left behind to rot in a prison camp. Unable to reveal anything about the mission, Outback couldn't even explain the situation and defend himself. When he was confronted by Leatherneck, In no mood to have the angry Marine yell at and threaten him, Outback pulled a hunting knife on him, warning, "Don't you even begin to threaten me..." The situation was quickly defused by the other Joes, but many remained suspicious. Months later, when Stalker and the others returned after being rescued, Outback felt guilty over leaving them behind. The freed Joes told him he had done the right thing and had nothing to be ashamed of. On his next mission, Outback and Dusty were leading what was supposed to be a simple operation to blow up a hidden weapons cache in the desert. The mission was to serve as a training mission for two newly-recruited Joes, Lightfoot and Mangler. To their surprise, the Joes found themselves under attack by members of the Trucial Abysmian army. The four Joes were captured, and the unit's overzealous Aman tortured Lightfoot until he revealed the Joes' plans. Most of the army unit left to find the weapons, with the unit's commander, Captain Yusif staying behind to execute the Joes. He had tried to stop political officer's brutality and now let the Joes free, telling them to head for a friendly port. They decided to head for the cache anyway, and traveled across the desert with no vehicle and little food. Dusty and Outback's knowledge of desert survival made certain they reached their goal. They completed their mission, though Mangler was killed insuring his teammates' escape. Outback later participated in the Cobra Island civil war, which the Joes entered on the side of Serpentor. Shortly afterward, he and Ripcord led a group of new recruits to keep Cobra from claiming a newly-formed island not far from the original Cobra Island. They were barely victorious before the entire landmass sunk back beneath the ocean. Later, Outback was one of the small team of Joes observing Castle Destro when Cobra attacked the Scottish castle. Outback continued to work with the team for years until it was shut down in 1994. (#59, 61, 62, 64, 67, 76, 80, 86, 87, 130, 131; SM 6, 13, 27)

hobowithAk, First of all, the pic shown is from the visit of the father of the current President, George H. W. Bush, (41st POTUS) not Dubya (43rd POTUS). Hence, "former U.S. President."
I know that. Any POTUS should always be named Mr. President. If Abe Lincoln sprung from his grave, you call him Mr. President. It's a respect thing that I was tought as a kid.

There was a great photo years ago of three sbs chaps walking into town in east timor in the first day of operations, two carrying hk53's and the bigger chap carrying an m16 with m203 (correct me if i have the wrong designation), it was in the papers at the time, some showed them with blurred out faces, others un-blurred, was front page, never been able to find the same pic online. One more quick note folks. The US Secret Service is the USSS, not SS for obvious reasons. Their Uniformed Division is the USSS UD (they used be know as the White House Police).
Also, there's one pic in the thread that says Secret Service agents are guarding the Secretary of Defense. He has his own Protective Services Detail (PSD) drawn from either the US Army's CID (the Protective Services Detail) or the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (the former Defense Protective Service) Protective Services Unit.
They guys don't play. We used to provide additional static security, ECPs, and clear the road for them ahead of Rummies visits to several Army posts around the DC area.
