Some 600 Indonesian Marines listen to their commander as they prepare to leave Jakarta for the troubled province of Aceh, May 10, 2003. The Indonesian government has sent thousands of its troops to the most western province of the country as the deadline for the separatist movement in Aceh to resume peace talks and lay down their weapons expires on May 12. *******/Dadang Tri

Indonesian Marines are not too bad. I wouldn't really compare them to the USMC or the Royal Marines, as that's sort of unfair to the Indons, Given that not too many Nations have the funds or facilities to field, say, a MEU(SOC) or two in in the Med/Pacific/Atlantic. (concurrently!)
;)
These guys are used throughout the length & bredth of the Indonesian Archipeligo, all 17,000 islands. I guess if your nation was made up of ten thousand islands plus, you'd want troops that are fairly maritime-oriented, too!
Hence the Indon aquisition of Ex-East German navy vessels & large numbers of old warsaw pact gear. Sadly, These fellows still use PT-76's for the handy amphibious beach capability! (Can YOU say BF Vietnam?) If you thought a Stryker or an ASLAV was vulnerable to Anti-Armour, you should thank your luck stars you are not serving in the Indonesian Armoured Corps. p-) Besides, Indonesia straddles the Equator, & old Soviet-Era tanks & Vessels were not exactly world famous for their superior Air Conditioning or creature comforts.

As an aside, the Indonesian Marines also have a Raider Battalion that wears a "Raider" tab similar to the current US Ranger tab, whose role is similar to the old USMC Marine Raiders of Guadacanal & Bouganville. They are quite well trained & disciplined, compared to the rest. So it's not all Vibrant Berets & scarves, dude. They get sent to the US to attend training, in a similar program to the Latin Countries going to the Jungle Warfare School of the Americas in Panama, etc. They also cross-train with fellow ASEAN forces alot, such as the Thai's, Malaysians & the Phillipinos, who have seen their fair share of insurgent activity back home too, so they aren't to be dismissed lightly.

BTW, a lot of that info is WAYYYYYYYYYY old, dude. 2003? :cantbeli: Things are QUITE different in Aceh post-Tsunami, & the New Indonesian President is an ex-General who is more...attuned to the situation than Megawati ever was, by virtue of his prior military training.
