Why do SF often not wear body armour?

I'm no military but I think to have beter maneuverability. If nothing dampers Your movements it's a lot easier to move and operate.
Plus, the weight of personal body armor is quite big if you ask me p-)

I know as a medic we hate wearing our IBA. I couldn't imagine the SOF wearing it day in and day out.

The best way to protect urself is to take down the enemy.Without the bod armour, the mobility increases and so does the chances to take down enemy.

Has it ever occured to any of you that just 'cos line troops wear one kind of big, bulky (and cheap) body armour, other people don't wear something different?

I never wore any body armor back in the day... I remember them handing out flak vest to us for the invasion of Haiti.. I prefered to just run fast..

That's cause the PASGT didn't stop sh*t. The IBA is a lot better at stopping bullets.

My take: For the most part, pretty much everyone wears body armor in the current AO. Lots of urban terrain time, and you never know when an IED will go off; I'd wear mine as much as possible.

You haven't paid a lot of attention than. SF do use bodyarmor when they expect combat. Or platecarriers when they think normal bodyarmor is too bulky and they'll maily face bullets.

But SF also do a lot of recon and than they don't want to do any combat. They want to stay hidden and unseen. In that case they don't use bodyarmor.

Normal soldiers ALL wear bodyarmor. Current operation are a lot of MOUT and vehicle-borne and less humping around with a backpack of 40kg. When facing IED's, handgrenades and CQB, it's pretty usefull to wear bodyarmor. It's a fact that the Interceptor bodyarmor saved a lot of lives in Iraq

Frost, Mr. Skor's post was a joke.

I fixed the pix (screw imageshack), and would like to say:

A. These photos come from very early in the War when many forces, digger or otherwise had no armor pro.

B. SF do what they gotta do.

C. Type "Australian Army Images" click on the first site, open image gallery, and search for "Special Forces".

enjoy

Back when I was in, we didn't have the OTV.. The RBA did exsist the last couple of years , but we did get that either, that is not when I was in the division. I know that my Bn got RBAs before deployment to Bosnia. Back when I was in the Bat. We didn't have anything but the Flak vest... no one wore it though..

What? Don't me laugh. There was plenty of body armour around in Iraq in 03 mate.
The main reason they aren't wearing it IMO is the fact that these photo's were taken after the airbase had been taken and 4RAR were in town securing it whilst an in depth search was being conducted.
These regiment guys probably couldn't be arsed putting their armour on because they were shafted with a photo op for goverment publicity.
4RAR don't have armour on either in the photos taken at the same time
