A picture I took of Bois de Belleau, France, in June 1996. On June 6th, 1918, the 5th Marine Regiment attacked across this field. It is about 400m across. The wheat is about waist high. Imagine walking across this field, with hundreds of riflemen and dozens of machinegunners waiting for you...

Figure this out...
I'm watching a concert on DVD, for lack of better
things to do (like homework  ) and there
are a couple of moments that would look good as
screenshots. But when I pasted into Paint, the shot
I took wasn't there... the concert was playing in Paint!
I thought at first the programme was being dumb,
so I went back to the DVD window, (which was still
playing) and the images were the same. Guess I need
to pause the DVD to get a good screenshot.

you need special capture software to capture pictures from dvd. pending the software that came with your video card you might be able to. if not you have to hunt it down. when i was at my friends he tried capturing a picture which didnt work just like yours, so he spent the next half hour searching for a app then tweaking its settings so he could capture from dvd on his pc. i think i remember a couple mac ones but i cant recall the pc app he downloaded.

simple: real-time bump-mapping and real-time lighting.
possibly one of the sorest issues for game developers is the limit of the engine to produce the kinds of atmospheres they want. doom3 is going to be the engine of the future for developers to get the atmosphere they want.
imagine walking slowly through a darkened room and the light through moving blinds is casting moving shadows. you begin creeping through the room looking around, letting the lighting guide you as much as possible. all is quiet when you suddenly see two orange glowing eyes looking at you. the eyes start moving towards you and you can make out the being with the barely visible slits of light. it gets closer and closer...
you get the idea. doom3 is going to try to scare the s*** out of you, and the engine is making it possible.
here is a shot of HL2.

no revolution. just as in the original HL. i'm not knocking HL but you get the idea. you play for the game. :)
That's not special... with some work you could even do it in the old HL engine (yeah, the lightning wouldn't look as flashy and all, but still). From what I've seen so far Far Cry will propably be able to do this as well. I'm fairly sure Splinter Cell had the realtime lightning stuff as well. STALKER might have it as well. HL2...well.. nothing's finished yet; might as well get it too.
What am I getting at? It's NOT revolutionary. It's just some more new graphic features. And even IF those features are so 'super' it's still not much more than playable 3Dmark. Revolutionary games these days have to revolutionize by gameplay. Not graphics.
Oh and Ratamacue is right...you are a D3 fanboy. And you knock HL2 without any good reason. Hell, you never even experienced HL 1 so what are you talking about anyway. :|

real-time bump-mapping and real-time lighting. simultaneously.
and i'm talking about the graphics engine, nothing much more than that.
and graphics engine revolutionize. best examples? doom 1(first FPS) and quake 1(first true-3d FPS) and quake 2(advent of lighting and effects layers). and quake 3(first designed graphics engine for commercial uses (Call of Duty, BF1942, MOHAA, etc).
just so you guys aren't confused, i'm talking about graphics engines. and using DX9 effects layers isn't revolutionary in itself. is HL2 going to be a great game? absolutely! is its engine going to revolutionize? no. that's my point.

revolution in graphics engines is extremely important because the environment drives gameplay. gameplay doesn't drive itself. ;)

Exactely Ratamacue :D
Oh, and the Q3 engine wasn't a commercial-use designed engine...the only thing special about Q3 was that its engine was able to use other-than-triangle-polygons, and that the game was the first true MP fps... that's all.
Real-time bump-mapping...real-time lighting. Well, the only thing that it's gonna add is real-time bump-mapping, as real-time lighting has been around for a while. Real-time bump-mapping...well...it's just one pretty small feature. The other-than-triangle-polygons in Quake 3 didn't exactely revolutionize either. Seriously...this isn't revolution...it's just EVOLUTION. Just like how Q1 was the first to use polygons instead of sprites.... Wolfenstein... now THAT was revolution.

Wolf3d was an important evolution in game making, but the revolution in FPS didn't come until doom1 with its ability to run textured surfaces in large open environments on the technology of its day.
sure wolf3d was an FPS, but it was evolution. its graphics engine was too simplistic and couldn't be scaled to anything worth crap. :|

The reason half-life and it's mods are still so vastly played is the gameplay, even though I particualary (SP) hate CS, I still love halflife for it's great gameplay.

Eh?!
Wolf3D was the FIRST to give a 3D shooting environment... And actually the environments where sometimes pretty large and open (remember the 'boss' of the first episode (or campaign or whatever)?) The engine wasn't simplistic or anything, it was just bound by the computers of the time. Doom 1 didn't really revolutionize anything. It only expanded on Wolfenstein; higher res textures, more colors, and better architecture (most notable; height).
Doom 1, and 2 were just the technological next steps after Wolf3D.

well, that's really kinda the point. sure, doom3 has an absolutely incredible 3d engine, but wouldn't that have come out eventually? yes. but it's the one going to be leading the way.
wolf3d was really an evolution for gameplay. no other game had that perspective before. however, from a graphical/technological standpoint, it didn't offer any scalability. it was limited to 'one-dimensional' rooms, single-floor levels, and very limited texturing.
in fact, wolfenstein3d was really an evolution in terms of graphics engines. previously, there was a game (i forget the name) that was an 'FPS' but it was a 90 deg rotating FPS, and the movement wasn't very dynamic. wolf3d really just expanded upon that and introduced free-motion. but the graphical engine was basically the same.
doom actually had outdoor areas and 3d world scalability (even though there was no y-axis 'looking' like in quake 1 or duke3d. and the texturing was absolutely revolutionary for the computers of the day.

you're clueless man. would HL have decent gameplay as a 2d side-scroller?

Well you said Doom 3 would be revolutionary... Doom 3 is the name of a game. Now HLs gameplay wouldn't be possible in a 2d side-scroller, as it would just be too hard to 'bring the atmosphere'. Yet, I sincerely doubt if it would have made a difference if HL was made with technology of 2 years ahead. It would still rock; because of its gameplay.
Graphic engines don't make a game. Sure, it's nice, but games with good gameplay and average graphics are always better than games with average gameplay and good graphics.
Big examples of good graphics, average gameplay:
Unreal 2... graphics were good...gameplay wasn't anything special. Small replay value, and just not one of those games that make you smile when you think of it years later.
Project IGI 2. Great long distance views and all. Looked really nice. Gameplay just couldn't deliever.
Big examples of average graphics, great gameplay:
Deus Ex (graphics weren't exactely thrilling at the time...),
Counter-Strike... (graphics are well....dated as **** but it's still a great game),
Grand Theft Auto (come on...everyone knows GTA 1's graphics were totally crap, yet the game ****ing rocked)
Now all the games in the second category where big hits, the games in the first category were dissapointments. Wohoo... I just made my point.

it's settled, then: the doom3 engine is going to kick ass, except graphics engines don't make the game. the game depends on both the graphics engine and the core gameplay.
well, that's really kinda the point. sure, doom3 has an absolutely incredible 3d engine, but wouldn't that have come out eventually? yes. but it's the one going to be leading the way.
Incredible game engine? So far it's got... like... 2 new features. Woopdeedoo. Besides I have yet to see if it's gonna lead the way on anything, especially now that Far Cry looks like it's gonna steal a lot of their flame.
wolf3d was really an evolution for gameplay. no other game had that perspective before. however, from a graphical/technological standpoint, it didn't offer any scalability. it was limited to 'one-dimensional' rooms, single-floor levels, and very limited texturing.
TWO-dimensional rooms. The texturing didn't really differ much from Doom. Maybe the resolution changed a bit due to better computers, but that's it. Wolf 3D was the FIRST game where you could walk anywhere you want from a first person view while shooting bad guys... the kind of games there's now LOTS of. Wolf3D started it all.

Again...Wolf3D was the first that allowed a 3D presentation of things in a game. Period. Revolution. (90 deg rotating crap can be simulated 3D.)
doom actually had outdoor areas and 3d world scalability (even though there was no y-axis 'looking' like in quake 1 or duke3d. and the texturing was absolutely revolutionary for the computers of the day.
Outdoor areas? Well, technically it was just a normal room with different textures.... Nothing special about that. 3D world scalability? Don't see no difference with Wolf 3D there. Sure, the scalability had more detail, but that's it. Texturing wasn't really revolutionary, it was just an evolution of Wolf3Ds way to do it, and keeping up with better computers. (Oh, and Duke 3D didn't have y-axis looking...the looking up and down was simulated)

right, duke3d wasn't true 3d. sprites were still used, and the way that you could look up was a calculation based on the 2d for elevation. so it just looked really crappy. quake was the first true-3d game.

The explanation is right, but the conclusion is not... Apart from the player models it didn't look much different than Quake 1. Also level design, texturing and all that was better in D3D than in Q1. Quake 1 wasn't the first true 3D game. The only difference between Q1 and previous games was that it used polygon player models instead of sprites...that's all.

what the hell are you talking about? have you tried looking skyward in duke3d? it's a scaling of the 2d for elevation. it's so damn obvious, too. try looking upwards. it looks just like you're looking forwards, only you're looking at something higher than what is coplanar to you.
