All those MiGs that have been found since the invasion - what has become of them? Are they being restored/upgraded to be used in the new Iraqi AF or have they been shipped to the US for training purposes?

Anyone know?

The modern ones were moved to Iran and wont be given back, the other ones are just scrap metal.

The Old Iraqi airforce was basically dismantled and hidden about the place prior to 2003, theres basically nothing left.

Theres a huge article on ACIG about it if you're interested. :)

Some of the ones I saw had been bulldozed into a pile off the airstrip. That was 2003, so I don't know about them now.

80 mig 29 before the first gulf war. SADDAM IS A MORON80 ****ing mig 29!!! not even 80. Over 90 were ordered, but closer to 20 or 30 were actually delivered and used in operational units.

My uncle was in camp spiecher (al sahra) air base and there was a pile of aircraft bulldozed into a pile of scrap. He said somewhere they had a mig29 engine laying in the road as a roadblock....

Wow, they must've been in a pretty bad condition.

see, that makes no sense to me. Why would saddam send them to Iran of all places, the persians being saddams main enemy for so long. Jordan or Syria would make so much more sense.

the true nature of deals are unknown but one theory has it that after the planes lift up where it goes is pilots choice... and a lot of Iraqis fled to Iran in Saddam's era and perhaps Iran was the only country which was willing to pay for them and it had the means to operate them too!
