Hmmm.... I would guess there are several different models out there. One of these "handheld radios" that I know of is simply called "732". Its more for squad or team members to communicate with each other than for really serious use. This is because I think most of them transmit only in "clear".

Transmit in "clear"? If i am understanding correctly that would be "Plain Text" (unencrypted). The radios shown above do that plus various other things.
Are you sure you arent talking about ICOM's (They look like commercial walkie talkies/large motorolas)?

Just spotted an error in my post above. I meant, they usually transmit only in "clear", as in unencrpyted.
The range was also limited to a maximum of about 7 km (that was only in theory though. I used them mostly in forests and jungles and the range I got out of them was abysmal). In addition, they weigh about 1 kg each! Its like carrying a brick around.
I guess things have moved on considerably since I've used these things then.

So these things are called icoms?
Seems like it's just a basic radio with a large antenna stuck on it?
