From what I could find, there is no 552 LB. There is a 551 LB (long barrel):

My SIG551 SWAT looks exactly like that one ;) kicks ass. SIG 551lb is good for shooting rifle grenades or you can also fix the bajonett... but i think it looses it's compactness and so i prefere the 551 short barrel.

That's the point were Icarus is takin' over ;)
http://www.brezel.org/icarus/gwa.jpg

If you speak german or have a good translation program check out www.icarusnet.ch.vu

in the category "waffen" the GL5140 is listed under "GWA" (swiss army expression for the GL5140). Also you got all the other swiss weapons in use of the swiss armed forces. Hope this will help

Yours,

It depends if it's a 550 or 552

As you know the 30 rd mag is standard for the 552

550 (4.1kg) + GL5140 (1.7kg) + magazine (0.5kg) = 6.3kg?! Damn, that's heavy.

Does look like a nifty piece of equipment. Going by the stats, it provides the best length to barrel ratio of all 5.56mm weapons when the butt is folded.

Constructrion: The SIG-550 /which the SG-552 is based upon) is a somewhat lightened and refined SIG-540/541 rifle. SIG-550 featured AK-47 style action, gas operated, with gas piston attached to the bolt carrier, and with rotating bolt with two massive lugs. The recoil spring is located around the gas piston rod, above the barrel, and the bolt carrier attached to the gas piston rod by the mean of removable charging handle. The gas port has gas regulator with two different open and one closed position (latter for firing rifle grenades). The receiver is made from stamped steel and has two major parts, upper and lower, which are connected by pushpins. The barrel is screwed into the upper receiver. The trigger unit has a safety/fire selector switch on the left side of the receiver, with 3 settings: safe, semi-auto, full-auto. If desired, additional module could be installed in the trigger mechanism to allow 3-rounds burst mode. Rear sights are drum-type (like those found on Heckler-Koch rifles). SIG-550 has muzzle compensator/flash hider of NATO-standard diameter, so it is possible to launch rifle grenades from the muzzle. The SIG-550 has integral folding bipods under the handguard, and issued with side-folding, skeletonized polymer buttstock. Every rifle of SIG-550 family can be fitted with proprietary, quick detachable scope mount.
History: SG (also Stgw) stands for Sturmgewher.

Looks nice but is still a 5.56. Reason I personally don't like it because I prefer the m4/16 style magazine well. Push a button and it just drops out..

If I am not mistaken...wasn't the SIG551/552 a contender for the SCAR program?

Sweeeet! SIG552lb lovely looking gun. AK with Swiss clocksmith engineering is one great weapon.

But Il bet that there is a not so nice price tag on them? 5000 euros? I remember that semi-auto Sig550 was about 32 000 marks in Finland in about year 2000 or something. That is about 5000 euros.

To that other thread about M16/M4 replacement weapon, this would be my choice now. Enought gucci for US.. :-)

Visual differences between 552 and 553 (other than short vs. long barrels within both categories)? Can we see more of both in action?
