I'm looking to buy this pistol for home / self defence.

Anyone have any experience with it ?
Any opinions and comments welcome.
I do not want to buy anything else than a 9mm parabellum ( 9 X 19mm ) because of the increase in power, my wife must also be able to use it without being scared of it and she is quite small.

The Beretta 92 is the same as the M9 which is the standard pistol of the US Military. The exact one on that link just has a redone body. I am sure you can find ALOT of opinions and experiences with that weapon.

In my experience, they are alright, but for the money, you can do better.

Try out both, and find out which suits you better.
The Beretta usings a hammer system, so the trigger should be slightly crisper on the let-off at single-action. On the other hand, there's a long initial pull for the first shot.
The Glock is striker fired, and no Glock I've ever tried had that sweet feel. :) Why not try the new Smith and Wesson M&P? It's got the best striker fired trigger I've ever tried.

Well the advice I (we) give everyone is to buy what is the most comfortable for you. That includes how it feels in hand and how well you shoot it. If the Beretta is best for you, great. Personally, I would go with a Glock or a SIG.

good advice, i shoot wonders with the 92 but IMHO Glock or Sig is better.

I've never shot a M9, or the 92, but I have fired the Tomcat!
Its cute.
No lie, I like shooting Glocks.
Try before you buy, especially if its a gun.

If you're going to get a Beretta, stick with steel. No point in getting almost the same pistol but with a polymer frame. If it's the light rail that you want, look into the M9A1 or possibly the Vertec. As for Glocks and other DAO pistols, I like the option of choosing single or double action...I prefer steel too if you didn't notice.
PS-Something else to consider, with a brand-new design, it's going to be hard to find accessories for it (grips, holsters, etc)

Beretta M92's are good to shoot, accurate with okay recoil and muzzle flip. The grip is kind of fat for small hands though. Glock's and HK's feel square and boxy in the hands, very good pistols though. Check out a Sig P226R-very ergonomic. Go to your local gun store and look at your top pics, feel how they are in your hand. Try to go to a local range too and see how they fire. For home def. check out tactical lights to mount on your pistol. . . (Railed pistols are cool).

Oh yeah, also-TAKE YOUR TIME! Do a lot of research and actually hold and shoot your top pistol pics. In the end you want to be happy, not regretful and kicking yourself saying "why the freak did I get this gun!"

Me in a two gun competition we had last November.
I own a 92. I love the gun. Its a full sized frame though, so unless your wife has big hands, you might want to look at a different gun. If you want to stay with Beretta, try their Cougar.
There is also VERY little difference between the Beretta 92 and the Taurus version. The Taurus version costs less and still has all the things that make a 92 a 92.
And, like everyone else says, try several guns, get a feel rather than just window shopping for a purchase. The fact that you are buying a gun that your wife will use makes it a bit more cumbersome but still very doable...she needs to be there to try them.

This is NOT an M9.
It is a redesign of the 92 series.
The frame is NOT polymer, it is alloy, just like the other 92 series guns.
It has a new modular grip. You can get a smaller grip for smaller hands.
It has better visability sights. It has a rail. It has a 17 round magazine.
It looks to me that Beretta has fixed some of the stuff people have complained about over the years without ruining what was always a pretty good pistol.
For me the only problems with the old model were the big grips (I have small hands) and the sights were not the greatest.
If you can find it for a good price, you should buy it (after trying lots of different guns as everyone said above). I have two older 92 models, one 92S and one 92F. They are excellent guns that have given me many years of good service. But now I prefer Sigs.

Hell, I wasn't even paying attention. Its a new gun.
Ah well, I do not know how it shoots or how it feels.
I do not like the fact that they went a one pice grip though. I like screw on panels standard on the older rest of 92s and 1911s. That way you can modify them or customize it a bit to your liking. I know the say its "modular" but that is simply swapping out one whole grip for a slim one...not a lot to choose from there.
personally, I would suggest getting a 92FS. You get pretty much everything you get here minus the "new look". The slide, based on what I am reading here, would different, but not a bad thing. You'd still have an accessory rail too.
And it would be cheaper....or, again, go the Taurus route.

I trained on the M9..I would feel better taking the bullets out and throwing them at the attacker.. ;-)
Smith and Wesson has some good 9mm handguns..and they aren't that expensive.
Walthers are good too.

Do you think a 9mm para doesnt have enough stopping power ?

Are you buying the gun for you or the wife? If it is primarily for her get what fits her hand. I have trained numerous small female shooters to use a SIG P229 in .40 S&W and most can handle recoil with the proper grip, although some needed to work on hand/grip strength, especially for our 1-handed shooting strings. Whether or not she will be scared of it will depend on her mindset, not if the gun is a Colt Delta Elite 10mm or a Browning Buck MkII .22 LR.
The first gun I bought my wife was a Browning HP, it had plenty of rds, and fit her hands well & was simple to operate. I would not discount any quality handgun, that feeds reliably and meets your/her individual needs.
Yes, for a handgun round the 9mm is an adequate self defense round. Of course a Marlin guide gun in 45-70 will take care of almost anything up to a Mastodon...

If you are a 1st time shooter, stay with a cailber that you can control the recoil, meaning if you've never shot a pistol before don't shot or buy a 40 or 45 just because its the cool and latest thing to do.
Like everyone said its your money. Depending where you are-NATO country or USA, the 9mm is a good personal defence weapon when using good ammo and having good shot placement-center mass hits. US police departments such as NYPD and LASD still use the 9mm but allow the 40/45 as well.
I've shot the Sigs, Glocks, HK, Beretta, S&W, Walther, & Browning-9mm, they all shot very well. Go to your local indoor/outdoor range rent a pistol, try it out, take classes and buy decent ammo. Don't go cheap on yourself. After all these years as a personal off duty carry, I always like carrying either the Sig 228 or Glock 19, they both fit my hand well and are very good shooting psitols-my opinion.
