I deserve being keelhauled for going more off-topic, but I can't resist.
Bosman must be one of my favorite beers, but as with EB it has almost disappeared from the market.:-(

i respect only non-pasterized beers if you guys visit wroclaw go to Spiz and then to Instytut PUB, first has own brewery second one buys from small brewery "Bartek" cheap and perfec taste, also beers fromLwowek Slaski are great. dont be afraid of ban, forum mods and owners are alcocholic like we so they do not ban for alco-talk p-)

In that case.... :)
I learned to drink non-pasterized beer from my friend about 2 years ago, and I must say that I really like them. Too bad that they are hard to get in some places. As of now I am located in Sweden, but back in Poland I live in Ustka, we only have the standard beers there, especially in my local store. Beer in Sweden is even a more tragic storry. :-(

It looks like they were just delivered via plane, most likely they removed them for transportation. As far as armor, Jackal and BRDM-2 has better armor protection than uparmored hammer.

few info:
Jeszcze w tym miesiącu powinny do Afganistanu trafić granatniki automatyczne kal. 40 mm. – Minister obrony narodowej podjął decyzję o interwencyjnym zakupie 20 amerykańskich granatników MK19
Polish MoD made a decission to buy 20 pcs of MK19 2 belt-fed automatic 40mm grenade launchers, which should be send to Aghanistan in current month, yet.
There are a rumours that Polses will be given US Army body armors and some sort of individual equipment. Even ACU uniforms are considered to supply our troops  .

Rhino, the problem is the usual land forces beret is the sewn version, ugly, hardly formable and big as shyte. There are some pressed felt versions on the issue but harder to get so most people I know just buy their private berets - either manufactured locally or german or french issue ones.

that explains it a bit, I got a couple few years back, they were made from felt, and like you said way too big, so I made an assumption all of them are made of the same staff, guess I was way wrong

I have just found something interesting for Polish users – I think that you remember an old (2000) documentary movie “Kawaleria Powietrzna” (Air Cavalry) about Polish 25th Air Cavalry Brigade.
You can see all episodes here: http://www.dojarka.pl/tag/kawaleria+powietrzna
BTW: I hope it’s not a repost.

Maybe because (as I've heard) the T-72 suspensions totally failed in A-stan during the Soviet occupation. Instead they used T-55/64s combo.

Here (http://serwisy.gazeta.pl/swiat/1,34180,4147103.html) you can find an answer. Why Leos? Couse they (Canadian) are there and some countriues (Denmark) which plan to send them as well.

Unshaved buddy on the left wears our new uniform (US 2007) in desert version. Beryls are painted with NFM EC weapon paints, using the pixel templates made by our friend known from "fast AK reload" movie. Some MIWO and TDI railed foregrips etc...

So, who do you think he is (guy with p90)? I'd guess, going by his gear, the guy next (to the left, our right) to the officers is probably from 1 PSK.Has Grom recently purchased p90s?

As for the other question - yes, 2305 has P90, and yes Meindl Desert Fox boots and 5.11 pants, shirt and cap usually speaks "GROM" these days in Polish armed forces.

any more info on those piorun vests?
is this some new issue gear to replace the olv/klv vests?
No it's not new, and its not meant to replace anything. Moratex did it few years ago. Rather crude integrated modular vest, without any QR. Resembles a FSBE AAV vest. Sztab Generalny just purchased a batch of these vests for their VIP's touring in Iraq and Afg. No pouches, no sh_t. Just bare vests.

smartasses from the major staff... those must be XXXL sizes then.
that's a pity it is not going to replace the KLV/OLV series. is there any replacement planned for them?
PS: thanks, Catch.

Great Pix.
BTW we got over 500 T-72 left, why don't we modernize them to PT-91 standard? I know they recently decided to buy more Leopards but that wont be enough we need more modern tanks. And as I see it upgrading our T-72's that we have left would be the way to go.
We still have time to think about the next generation Tank, our problem currently is not Technological but rather it has to do with funds. Our budget currently is somewhere around $10 billion, or nearly 8 million euros whichever.

We still have time to think about the next generation Tank, our problem currently is not Technological but rather it has to do with funds. Our budget currently is somewhere around $10 billion, or nearly 8 million euros whichever.
The problem is as usual: money.
Those T-72 are 20 years old and older. I guess that only half of them are operational now. There is an idea, in our armed forces, to replace them by light tanks based on CV 90120....

Yep, I agree to us this has never been an issue of Technological know how.

It says we got 586 units of old T-72's left, if they can't be modernized then ok. Right now we have 232 PT-91, 128 Leopards and another 123 Leopards on it's way.
I think what would work for us best at least in the time being before we go to the next generation Tank is maybe a Fighting Vehicle like the Bradley with TOW missles. Bradley is basically like a light tank, during gulf war and operation Iraqui Freedom the knocked out more tanks then Abrams. So going with a vehicle like this or simmilar to it might not be such a bad idea.

Could anyone post some meaningful photos of Poles in Iraq, possibly with some comments? All I can see in the archives of "Redakcja Wojskowa" are variations on one single theme: General Lamla pinning medals, shaking hands and saluting. He must be tired of all that hard work.
This is not right, I am pissed off. I am sure ordinary soldiers perform their duties well, and General Różański, the commander of the Brigade Battle Group from Al Kut has been leading them well. But where are their pictures, where are their stories? The reports from Iraq seem extremely uninformative and biased as well. After all, the Multinational Division Centrum South is made of several nationalities. Where are their pictures and stories, aside from the "Mongolian soldier" story, which re-surfaced again recently?
All I could find about Diwaniya and Al Kut comes from some external sources. For example, a touching story of an Armenian soldier, who lost his leg while on patrol with Poles in Al Kut, http://yandunts.blogspot.com/2007/04/armenian-officer-wounded-in-iraq.html.
Or an information about a contingent of 2000 Georgian soldiers who are about to take over the command of Wasit Province (base Al Kut) from Poles, http://news.sawf.org/Lifestyle/38713.aspx. "Redakcja Wojskowa" does not mention this at all, aside from providing a short information about "Poles from Al Kut to be relocated to Camp Echo to join the other Poles stationing there". And yes, there is yet another gallery of pictures of general Lamla saying goodbye to commanders of Kazach and El Salvadorean contingents, which - I believe - will work with Georgians from now on.
General Lamla seems to be complaining a lot about security deterioration and about poor performance of police forces in MDCS area of responsibility. But should not he take part of the blame on himself? There is a blog run by a fellow Latvian, who strongly thinks so, http://therearguard.blogspot.com/. Warning: this is quite a bitter pill to swallow.
Search this forum. You will find thousands of photos with Poles in Iraq.

To underline my point again:
Breaking news from Iraq, June 19, 2007, "Redakcja Wojskowa": an article about "Cavarly Holliday" with six pictures.
General Lamla appears in four of them with: (1) a handshake, (2) a salute, (3) a speech and (4) a hero pose.
The article concludes: "After short celebration the soldiers went back to their duties. Some spent their holliday patrolling streets of Diwaniya." But the reporter/photographer did not go out with them. Why bother! OK, I understand, that photographer is the Lamla's court photographer, the "embedded" one. But he sucks big time! There are no meaningful news from Iraq, as I said before.
OK, I understand what Switek is saying about all eyes switched on Afghanistan now. Not that I think that this is good for the image. But let us examine the news from Afghanistan:
1. Embedded reporting.
Actually, not bad, in my opinion. Some articles may qualify as interesting, or at least as informative.
2. Independent reporting: Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta, Dziennik
Actually some articles are not bad - compared to Canadian press. At least they go out from their hotels and interview ordinary Afghans. I already translated one such article for this forum. That was from Gazeta, but Rzeczpospolita had few good ones as well. But, for many reasons, not all reports would qualify for translation for this forum.
Some are full of defeatism. Just take a look at the Dziennik's headlines:
"Polaków czeka koszmarnie trudne zadanie", "Afganistan gorszy niż Irak", "Wchodzimy do piekła". Yes, Sherlock, we all know it!
Some are actually funny in their naivete. Case in question: "Afganistan - wojna psychologiczna", http://www.dziennik.pl/Default.aspx?TabId=148&ShowArticleId=48886
Actually, I commented on that one on their forum.
What is missing? Photos! Photo-journalism.

Why is that? Couse most of the time our troops spend inside base. During fighting missions outside, nobody will be so irresponsible to take a civilian photographer with them.

You are not talking about military photographers, are you? Because if someone signs his article as Lieutenant Colonel he is probably qualified to go out with troops on patrol. And there are also the boys from our propaganda group - whatever its name.
If you are talking about independent reporting then hmm.. I saw an interview with BBC journalist who spent some time embedded with British troops. [Funny: Polish reporter interviewing the British one - that's what I call the first hand reporting.] I also saw a very long video of Canadian troops on patrol.[This one was posted on this forum as well]
I am not even talking about zillions of pictures - censored or otherwise - taken by coalition soldiers. Not that I have any right to demand this kind of news from Polish soldiers. But the other types - why not?

Care to explain the title "Iraq: Assistance in ruins"?
Are you being sarcastic - stressing futility of such efforts, or do you mean "providing assistance to people living among the ruins"?
If you mean the latter - you should have seen the real ruins, many years ago, at the center of Paris, known as Belleville, where the Algerians used to live. My French girlfriend used to be a social worker, and I would accompany her there from time to time. Man, that was really a scary place - almost as on photos of Warsaw after WW2. Staircases hazardously hanging by some rusty rods, kids playing in some holes. I have not been to Paris for more than 10 years, so I can only guess that Algerians live at suburbia now.

In rural areas and in small cities even pretty new Iraqi houses look like ruins. ;)
What doesn't change the fact that some of them have been destroyed, during the last four years.

I do not remember what country it is, but I am pretty sure that it is one of those "civilized" countries, where people never finish their newly built houses. One typically sees some iron rods sticking up through the roofs.
Apparently one does not pay taxes for an unfinished house.

There is an article in Stars and Stripes today entitled
"Commander: U.S. did not know children were at raid site",
http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=46827
This event will indirectly affect Poles in Paktika, although they have not been involved in the incident. Col. Schweitzer and his boys are still responsible for the eastern part of Paktika, bordering with Pakistan. But Lt.Col. Strąk, a commander of the Polish Battle Group, reports to Col. Schweitzer - as you know.
Not good.

Yes, it sounds equally well in both languages. :-)
I was not trying to sound facetious. I did not noticed any ruins at first on those pictures, so that's why I asked.

I am providing this link since this news is related to the Polish Battle Group in Afghanistan.
DoD Briefing with Col. Schweitzer and Maj. Gen. Khaliq via Video Conference from Afghanistan in the Pentagon Briefing Room, Arlington, Va., June 20, 2007
http://www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/transcript.aspx?transcriptid=3995
This is a live briefing, with a lot of "noise", so I am also providing few extracts below, as a summary of some kind:
Organization and formations in Eastern Afghanistan:
ANA plans and commands the entire operation in Eastern Afghanistan. 4th Brigade and Polish Battle Group are formally subordinate to Maj. Gen. Khaliq. [Notice slip of the tongue below: Col. Schweitzer should say Maj. Gen. Khaliq, not Colonel Khaliq.]
Col. Schweitzer: The 4th Brigade of the 82nd is a subordinate formation to Colonel Khaliq and the 203rd Corps as we continue to try to separate the enemy from the population and provide an opportunity for governance to get down to the people, giving the people an alternate view from what the Taliban had been providing.
Let me just give you a brief update about U.S. formations and our new organizations since I spoke to you last. First of the 508th is still the theater tactical force down there in RC-South doing great things for the commander of RC-South. The 1st of the 503rd, the battalion out of Italy, U.S. battalion out of Italy, has replaced 2nd of the 87th from the 10th Mountain Division, and they're now working along Eastern Paktika along the border area. We had the -- privileged to have the Polish Battle Group TOA last week -- transition of authority -- and so they're now part of Task Force Fury. They're doing a fine job in western Paktika.
We've got 473 and 2508, as well as one of the four PRTs that are organized underneath our Tactical Operations Center here forward in Ghazni working for General Khaliq in support of Operation Maiwand. And our Special Troops Battalion is still a battlespace-owner in Paktia doing a phenomenal job in Paktia and Lowgar. And our logistical battalion, I don't know how they're doing it, but they're providing logistical support and enabling us to maintain our operational tempo throughout 27,000 square miles of battlespace -- doing a phenomenal job.
And with that -- that's just a brief update just to let you know things are still going pretty well for us out here. And we've been fortunate, as I indicated in the opening comment, to be partnered with General Khaliq and his formation. He is the commander of the 203rd ANA Corps. He developed this plan that we're currently executing. As one of his subordinate formations and having said that, I'll turn it over to General Khaliq.
Hearts and minds
Altough ANP still gets pushed by Taliban, ANA fights them well and is quite visible in the area. That's what villagers want to see: their own people, not the coalition forces. How to measure the support by locals? See below:
And the answer is, over the last year -- there's 83 districts in the area -- in Task Force Fury's area of operation. About a year ago, about 19 districts were in support of the government. About -- in January, we had about 30 districts that were in support of the government; today, after a series of ANA-led operations, where about 60 of the 83 districts, that the village and the community leaders and the district leaders look to their government for the answer versus the Taliban.
And then if you go, well, how do you know that, how do you measure it?You measure it by the shuras that are conducted, by the independent shuras that are conducted, where the village leaders or the mullahs if you're in Ghazni now are saying they no longer accept recruitment in the Taliban of their kids. And there's no better barometer than that that indicates that these communities and these villages are looking towards their government now versus the Taliban.
Effect of suicide attacks
Negative, according to Col. Scheitzer:
No, they're not having an effect. They're not having an effect on the ground with respect to being able to retain ground. They are having some IO victories with this stuff because it -- the way it plays out. But the reality of it is their -- this is not another -- this is not Iraq. The Afghan people do not tolerate that particular scheme of maneuver by the enemy. And it is not working in support of them. And I'm telling you we're pretty confident that these attacks on the civilians are helping the cause to get the communities and the districts to start looking to the government.
The Afghan people do not appreciate that particular approach. And despite what may or may not be hitting the airwaves, down there on the ground in these communities, in these surrounding communities, they tell us day in and day out that they don't like it, they don't want to be a part of it, and they want more Afghan National Army forces on the ground securing their communities. So that's the effect that's getting created. It's more of a rejection than it is an acceptance or an acquiescence.

The text associated with the source of your pictures:
Soldiers of the Polish Battle Group have been patrolling for the last dozen days. Every day they go into another region of our responsibility zone, where they look in every, even the most forgotten, nook and crannie. Their presence there is a visible sign of ever increasing Polish activity in Afghanistan.
Pictures taken through a windshield of a Hummer or from a turret of a "Rosomak" (Wolverine) best illustrate their tasks.
Below are the pictures taken by the soldiers from the Battle Team Charlie, commanded by Major Olgierd Cieśla, during one of their patrols.
Battle Team Charlie - Are they in FOB Wazi Khwa? I saw it mentioned somewhere before.

Soldiers will be testing a new sniper rifle
Our soldiers in Afghanistan are eagerly waiting for a new kind of firearm. The sharpshooters have high hopes for the rifle "Bor". At this time only two such pieces will be given to Polish snipers, who will be testing them. The rifle may become irreplaceble in the war against terrorists.
What's important, the new rifle has been created in Polish works. After many years of trials and tests in the Research and Development Center for Mechanical Equipment in Tarnow their work has been successfully concluded. This is a 7.62 caliber rifle, with 10 rounds magazine.
According to the producer, its effective shooting distance is 800 meters. The only disadvantage of the rifle is its weight - 6.5 kg, and this does not take into account the weight of the optical sights and ammunition.
The rifle succeded in all factory test and trials and - what is most important - the Bor technical documentation has been also accepted. This means that Polish army can now proceeds with purchases, without any impediments. Our sharpshooters currently use Finish Sako, which had replaced Russian SWD. Sako was delivered to the army in 2001 and its first users were the commandos from 1PSK and the GROM operators. Each rifle costs 50,000 zloty. Now the same soldiers might be getting the new Bor rifles.

Actually the body of the rifle is made of duraluminium to make it lighter than the steel one.
And when it comes to sniper rifles - weapon can't be too light. Weight is an advantage in this case.

About alleged glimmering
The Polish article cited at the bottom of this message, dispels certain allegations that Polish uniforms have poor camouflaging properties when viewed via night-vision devices, i.e. that they "glimmer in nighttime". The author, Adam Dubiel, explains how the frequency transformation (from infrared radiation to visual light) implemented by night-vision devices is counter-matched by a similar transformation of properly designed fabrics, such as the ones used in Polish uniforms. In order for camo pattern to be effective at nighttime, as well as in daytime, the fabric itself reinforces the camo pattern for nighttime conditions. The first two pictures below explain that Polish unforms are indeed properly designed for both: day and night conditions.
The remaining two pictures, however, demonstrate that some auxiliary fabrics, such as those used in knapsacks, helemet covers and flak jackets do not satisfy the "frequency shift" property. [Actually, the American DCU uniforms (desert 3-color camo) are not much better either.] Some heads have been already falling for some time, and the manufacturing, testing and purchasing procedures of Polish Army are subject to some serious changes.
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/7571/swiec01jpg500704pixelsuq5.jpg
Collage of the Polish desert tropical uniform wz.127PI (camo: "pantera pustynna"), with the jacket of American ACU uniform (camo: pixel pattern UCP) and with the pants of American desert uniform DCU (camo: desert 3-color) - as seen in visual light under artificial illumination in a room with dark painted walls.
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6413/swiec02jpg500704pixelskp9.jpg
.. and this is how the elements of those three uniforms are seen in the darkness via a nigh-vision device. All three elements are clearly visible on the background of the dark wall. But this nothing wrong with this, because they suppose to blend to a real background they were designed for, such as a desert scenery - not the dark painted walls of buildings.
The patterns of Polish "pantera pustynna" (desert panther) and American UCP are clearly visible, as well as differences in their colors and countours of their deforming blots. This means that both those uniforms behave correctly when viewed via a night-vision device.
However, the American DCU pants (desert 3-color camo) are seen uniformly, because of their light coloristic and large surface of blots.
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/7901/swiec03jpg500664pixelsuc0.jpg
The elements held in hands here are made of a simple polyester fabric, which has no special reflection properties. Seen on the left is a knapsack covered by a desert camo and on the right - a sample of fabric covered by a wood camo. Their camo patterns are clearly visible under the visible light...
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/6913/swiec04jpg500664pixelsqe0.jpg
... however they loose their comouflaging property, taking shapes of uniform light blots - and thus are clearly visible and turn on attention. This is how some Polish personal equipment looks like via night-vision devices: knapsacks, helmet covers, and covers of flak jackets.

Our model of L-96 AWs are around 6.2kgs. More often than not its in the grab bag on your back. This rifle looks pretty good in that its quite compact, the AW is designed for shooting but not alot of thought to carrying the bloody thing.
Just a question for our poles, How common are optics on rifles in the infantry Bns?

It's a normal procedure used by US armed forces, as well. Interpreters are first target for snipers so they must look the same like other soldiers, for their protection.

Yes, just take a look at some headers in the press (just google "afghan translators"):
Al Jazeera English - News - Taliban Kill Afghan Translator
AsiaMedia :: AFGHANISTAN: Taliban beheaded Afghan translator
Afghan Translator Beheaded, Taliban Says » Netscape.com
Afghan Translator Abducted
Afghan translator was lightly wounded
Two American Special Forces soldiers and their Afghan translator were injured
Interpreters and translators are the first targets and they are big assets to any unit. They should be protected by all means and shown some gratitude. How do you do it - that's another matter. I guess, Poles do not mind offering them their uniforms as some kind of protection.
There is article somewhere about some Danes demanding that their Iraq interpreters should be given the right to settle in Denmark after Danes exit from the conflict. See also:

The Danish Government announced it will grant visas to Iraqi interpreters and aides who have assisted the Danish troops in Iraq. Defense Minister Soeren Gade said the Danish authorities will offer shelters to these Iraqis.
It is to be mentioned that 22 Iraqi interpreters and more than 100 workers in the human field have been assisting Danish Forces since their deployment in Iraq in 2003.

[translation of selected text and making captures - MZ]
Invited by the local authorities and the dwellers of the village of Mushuri, Wazi-Khwa district, Paktika province, Afghanistan, Polish soldiers met with kids of Mashuri coeducational primary school, on July 2, 2007.
This was one of the series of meetings with children and youth of the district, organized by the paratroopers of the Battle Team "Charlie" of the Polish Battle Group, the CIMIC Support Group and the PSYOPS Group.
Our soldiers were especially pleased because this time the meeting was initiated by the locals.
[A cynical thought: Rumours went around that Poles give away nice goodies and show pretty slides. Yeay! No regular school today! - MZ]
"Such actions allow for mutual familiarization. Afghans learn about Poles and our culture, and they recognize some common historical elements - which creates bond of mutual understanding and cooperation. In addition, this is the better part of our job here when we have a chance to meet directly with people and children" - says Lt. Artur Pracki, a platoon commander.
"Even though I serve in Afghanistan only as a private first class I am convinced that I do something useful, something 'great'. I am glad that I am here and that I can help these people. We all realize the immensity of work and challenges in front of us, but we are ready to face it in order to help Afghanistan and its people" - stresses private first class, Juliusz Wiącek, CIMIC Support Group.
Mjr. Olgierd Cieśla, a commander of the Battle Team "Charlie" of Polish Battle Group, plans to continue with further CIMIC actions - not only promotions in schools of the district, but also with other projects.

Notice the capture 'Bóbr' over the projection of the beaver - that's the 'beaver' in Polish of course. I wonder who would need to know that - the presenter or the kids? :-)

In addition, all school teachers were given some pedagogical kits. Chidren received 250 kits - each containing a satchel, notebooks, crayons, penballs, flamasters, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners.

Mashuri coeducational primary school, their teachers and Polish soldiers. Their basic problem is lack of a school building. Kids are taught under the blue sky and their teachers have to improvise a lot. The CIMIC Support Group from the Polish Battle Group intends to implement several school building projects in the Paktika province.

A nitpicker! I can make it facing either way:

http://www.oakcreek.k12.wi.us/ca/mwiederhoeft/gr_1_Egyptian_Drawing_Mitchell_0405.jpg
because I am using Egyptian style for my drawings. You know this convention: faces shown in profile, feet parallel and in the same direction, etc.
But all conventions are somehow artificial, which I am going to illustrate by this little story:
One of my friends, a volunteer to some African country, once asked a local artisan to make him a special chair - which he has drawn on a large piece of paper, in a 3D parallel perspective, using 1:1 scale. Few days later he received the product: a flat piece of plywood, exactly matching the contours of the drawing, with some slots in it. The poor guy did not understand anything about parallel projections. That tells you something about artificiality of European art and its conventions. :-)

Update - Polish Military Contingent KFOR in Kosovo
Poles are currently stationing in two American bases in Kosovo.
One is a very comfortable Camp Bondsteel, near the town Uroševac - where they serve as a part of POLUKRBAT, Multinational Task Force East MNTF(E), along the Ukrainians and a squad of Lithuanian soldiers. They control the Southern mountaineous frontier along the border of Kosovo and Macedonia. The POLUKRBAT battalion resides there since August 28, 2006.

One company of Polish soldiers serves in the Northern mountaineous frontier along the border with Serbia. They are stationing in Camp Nothing Hill, North of the town Leposavic and river Ibar, where they serve along Czechs and Americans as part of Task Force Ibar, MNTF(N), French region of responsibility.

Previously the POLUKRBAT resided in the Camp White Eagle, near Priština, from July 1999 until August 2006. The Camp White Eagle has been officially closed on September 1, 2006.
You can easily identify locations of towns Uroševac, Leposavic and Priština, even on this compressed map:

If this resolution does not satisfy you, there are several high resolution maps of Kosovo available here: http://www.nato.int/kfor/media/maps.htm
Fog of Military Information
Keep those dates in mind if you do not want to get confused by the "Fog of Military Information". For example, there is a website of POLUKRBAT, http://www.tffalcon.hqusareur.army.mil/polukbat/index.htm, which has tonnes of good pictures, but also a lot of outdated information, such as the commanders' names, their photos and profiles. BTW, the current commander of PMC KFOR is Lt-Col. Zbigniew Ząbek.
Other "Fog of Military Information" sites are the official site of "Ministry of National Defence", http://www.mon.gov.pl, "Operational Command" site, http://www.do.wp.mil.pl, and a bunch of other "brass" related sites. They seem to copy the same stuff over and then they ignore to update their pages from time to time. Shame on you!
