Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo: People salute and gesture as Polish soldiers from a joint EU, UN and Congolese force patrol 24 August 2006 the streets of Kinshasa to ensure soldiers loyal to two rival presidential candidates are abiding by a truce that has restored uneasy calm to the Democratic Republic of Congo capital. The agreement followed two days of clashes triggered by the publication 20 August 2006 of provisional first-round presidential election results which gave Kabila 44.8 percent of the vote against 20 percent for Bemba. Sixteen people were killed in the violence, according to a provisional death toll on yesterday, but was expected to rise. And the second batch of your pictures shows a soldier with a label "ROZPOZNANIE" (Recce) above a badge with some sort of bird of prey - white or silver in color.
Now here is a task for you, the badges aficionados: can you match it?
I've quickly scanned http://falerystyka-odznaki.republika.pl/folder_1.html but could not find anything that matches.
BTW, it seems that the owner of the above link is going commercial. You will not find any pictures there if you connect to his top link http://falerystyka-odznaki.republika.pl instead.

Yes, it is. So the Sherlock Holmes and dr. Watson can now announce: Jocker_89, both batches of your pictures show soldiers from the same 21st Podhale Rifles Brigade (21 Brygada Strzelców Podhalańskich)[1].
One of its units is Polish-Ukrainian Peace Force Battalion, or POLUKRBAT[2], named after the Polish Hetman[3] Jan Karol Chodkiewicz and Ukrainian Het'man Piotr Konaszewicz Sahajdaczny. One of the soldiers, which you have shown, wears the badge of this battalion with Polish (white-red) and Ukrainian (yellow-blue) colors. This unit has been deployed in Kosovo and several MP threads show many pictures of its soldiers.
Dr. Watson, aka zvezadah, has somehow (?) identified the badge of the second soldier (the eagle is clutching an edelweiss) as the badge of the recce company of 21st Podhale Riffles Brigade.
A current symbol of Podhale Riffles is edelweiss, placed on cuffs, collars and sleeves of uniforms.
There is however, another symbol - a Highlander Cross[4], a right facing swastika, which used to be (or still is?) a symbol of Podhale Rifles. I know a cultural difference between the Nazi swastika and a sanscript-based swastika - used by many cultures - but still, this symbol gives me some creeps. All regiments of the 21st Podhale Riffles Brigade use some form of the Highlander Cross - although not as ****ounced as Nazi swastika - as part of their badges.
[1]hhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podhale_Rifles
[2]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POLUKRBAT
[3]Hetman was the title of the second highest military commander (after the monarch) used in 15th to 18th century Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania, known from 1569 to 1795 as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Unrelated event, but also interesting.
There was very important and official Brotherhood ceremonies conducted at the Embassy event concerning the U.S. Department of State and elder U.S. President George W. Bush. Gifts and special mementos were presented to Michael Sessums, Poland Desk Officer, and to Ann Hall, Designated Consul General in Krakow, who will assume that office later this summer. Janet Garvey, Director for Northern and Central European Affairs, accepted a special Order of the Brotherhood of the Rooster medal on behalf of President Bush, who accepted honorary Brotherhood membership 3 years ago at Wawel Castle when he visited Krakow (many other esteemed and prominent persons have been so honored with honorary membership, including Pope John Paul II). Hannah Reiter, wife of the Ambassador, was also favored with flowers and unique gifts. The evening's closing rituals was proof positive that the Brotherhood was still dynamically upholding its original charter and altruistic mission 749 years after it's founding, and that it will continue to flourish in the future for all the uncountable years to come.

Polish amv Rosomak hit a mine in A-stan. :|
The crew remained unharmed.
At about 9.37 PM local time, a mixed polish-american patrol has been shot at no more than 30 kilometers SW from their base, while returning form an engineering mission. With accordance to the procedures a rapid response team has been sent to assist in the area. After aiding the patrol and returning to the base the polish amv Rosomak hit a mine , which disabled one of its wheels and damaged the engine. The amv has been retrieved by the units form Szaran base. No one was harmed.
As the polish defense ministry says; the disabled amv was one of the already uparmoured ones (steel-composite armor). All 24 Rosomaks in Afghanistan should be fitted with upgraded armor within two weeks.

Intensive training In the 8th IA DIV
On the 11 August 2007 the recruitment of Iraqis soldiers took place Ad Diwaniyah. The best Iraqi soldiers from the 1st battalion, the 8th IA Div will participate in the six weeks course. Qualified graduates, with support of specialists from Polish MiTT (Military Transition Team), will train other Iraqis platoons. Additional skills of Iraqi Army soldiers allow them to better cooperate with coalition forces.
http://foto.mw.mil.pl/foto.php?vhost=mndcs&id_md=3062
Iraqi soldiers will learn the techniques of urban operations, hostages rescue, maneuver escort with helicopters. The additional training allows to achieve the full compatibility between Iraqis and Polish components. Iraqis platoons in near future will be able to conduct joint operations with Polish Maneuver Group – stated MiTT Chief LTC Arkadiusz Siwak. The most important lessons learned would be the understanding of habits and appropriate behavior that are essential to real combat situations – added MiTT instructor MAJ Krzysztof Wójcik.

From centuries afghans were cured by themselves, and nature regulated numbers of borns and deaths. High mountains and seasons of the year limited meetings with doctor. Afghan health service, just as many others branches of social live, needs not only reconstruction but form it from basis. – States deputy of director in Sharana hospital doctor Hannal Atullah.

Hospital in Sharana is one of two hospitals in Paktika province, where live about 4 millions of afghans. Each day several dozen patients are waiting for help. Building of hospital was renovated few years ago from money of foreign humanitarian foundations. – However it was not enough money for shopping new hospital equipment. - Said Hannal Atullah. – We realize that many of our equipment is twice olders than our doctors. – Adds Atullah.
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4814/dscf26079a3de6ex3.jpg
Hospital consists from several wards where is working about thirty doctors and two women. This is important because in Afghanistan many procedures on women can do only female doctors.
Polish soldiers from combat group have prepared project of assistance for this hospital. The most needed things in hospital are medicines in particularly antibiotics. – States chief of health service PGB major Marek Piekarski. We have taken a stand with idea of instructing several midwifes, which next will instruct another women. Also we want to buy new ambulanse.- Said major Wiesław Sarnowski.

It is hard to explain what makes , that so called normal soldier is turning into sniper. Reliable hand and sharp eyes are not enough, They need something more.
Saying about us that we are special is a small exaggeration. we are doing only our job. It is truth that for this "work" we must have so called flair(smykałka). Despite pretence it is not so easy to take a good shot from long distance. We must take into consideration distance that separate us from the target, ballistics matters, lay of the land, power of wind etc. we can not take our sniper's rifle and shoot to somebody. – Snipers explain

http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/650/934jd7.jpg
When we are observing them at work, we can see how good they are in their profession. Rifles with sights in their hands are guarantee of safety for people which they must protect. Most important thing is experience and good familiarity with own rifle. In all opinion of snipers Afghanistan is a place where they can not only check their own experience but also learn something new.

From Ghazni to Sharana
Among many tasks, what polish soldiers realize In Afghanistan, convoys are considerable part of their work. Long and short. One day or several days – it doesn't matter.
The most important thing is reach the goal. Safely. Also return is very important. They many times took part in such convoys. Today photoreport from 80-km convoy between bases in Sharana and Ghazni. In the main roles soldiers of major Michał Hołuba from combat team A from Ghazni. When commander of convoy lieutenant Rafał Zieliński led teaching before departure, everybody carefully listened. Especially sapers because they usually don’t complain on lack of jobs. Convoys never aren’t the same, so there is no place on routine. Convoy has stopped many times in order to clean road from the “surprises”

Soldiers also have found time on passing through village and conversation with afghans. Over 40 degree heat melted down asphalt under the weight of military machinery. Cracked afghan land, tents of nomads, dirty trucks, Animals, Lake and majestic mountains in background. And between this landscape polish flags on vehicles. Each departure falls in memory on long time. Though during the patrol there is not many time to admire views, however every person something retain in memory. Thanks to camera these memories will live many many years longer.

Yes it is. Gebirgsjäger is the German word for mountain infantry. Podhale rifles (Polish: Strzelcy podhalańscy) is a traditional name of the mountain infantry units of the Polish Army.

Lukáš: Do you have a source of this photo? I have seen it before but I cannot find it again.
I remember that this was taken few months ago during some championships of highlander units - either in Switzerland or in Austria, with many teams from Germany, Austria and Switzerland participating. Polish team did not do so well; on this picture Poles are just receiving a 'thank you for taking part' consolation prize.
The competition was tough; some teams did not even finish the first leg of the trek. As I saw it, compared to other teams, Poles were not well equipped and they were struggling in their standard uniforms - the way you see them on the picture.
By the way, judging by the colors of their badge (yellow on blue) - they are from a command battalion from Rzeszów.
A background on the unit was provided several years back on this forum by user Remov: http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showpost.php?p=34732&postcount=12
I also wrote something in this thread several pages back, in conjunction with a subject of the Polish-Ukrainian Battalion, which is a part of the 21th Podhale Rifle Brigade.

Referring to the picture with schoolgirls on the foreground:
Just a reminder that there is an age limit (12 years old?) where girls are allowed to freely roam in the countryside and are not being locked inside - as opposed to some 'liberal' cities, such as Herat or Kabul.
I just wonder whether they attend high schools in Paktika province.

Mission
CAOC 3 is NATO’s northernmost Air Operations Centre, being the only NATO Command remaining in Norway. Norway has transferred the responsibility for its Air Defence to NATO, and CAOC 3 conducts round the clock Surveillance and Air Policing of Norwegian Air Territory. On behalf of NATO, CAOC 3 controls the Norwegian radar system, the Norwegian F-16s on Quick Readiness Alert (QRA) and NATO’s Airborne Warning and Control Aircraft. Frequently, we intercept unidentified aircraft heading for, or flying into, Norwegian airspace. CAOC 3’s Recognized Air Picture is being reported to the Alliance as well as to Norwegian military and civil Authorities.
Manning
CAOC 3 is manned by personnel from Denmark, Germany, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom. They also train for and serve in ISAF Afghanistan, in the Coalition CAOC in Quatar and in the NATO Response Force (NRF), which might be deployed at short notice.

Meeting about eduction
2007-09-04 10:17:24
On September the 3rd there was a meeting in Wazi-Khwa devoted to education.
The participants were: Mr. Sayed WALI, an education officer, and primary school teachers from the district Wazi-Khwa. Invited were representatives of the CIMIC Support Group from the Polish Battle Group.
The basic problems, discussed by the participants, are lack of suitable infrastructure (about 70% schools form this region do not even have their own school buildings), lack of educated teachers, textbooks, basic utensils and educational tools.
After the meeting the representatives of the CIMIC Support Group delivered to Mr. Sayed WALI and the teachers the materials for teaching English. Textbooks, exercise books, audio cassettes, CD disks and some VHS should find their way to all those schools in Wazi-Khwa district, where English is actually taught.

Soldiers from polish military contingent very often go on a journey into many different places in Afghanistan. One of these places is specific. It is orphanage in city Charikar under the patronage of polish soldiers.

30 kilometres away from Bagram, with over hundred of wards, is a sad place. Here happiness and smile appears on face rarely. Bags of presents for children, also works over project for improvement of infrastructure because life conditions in orphanage are very terrible, these are main goals of visit of polish soldiers. Besides basic medical care. It is worth to visit places where happiness has dimension of bottle of water or sweet. Especially as smile is associated here with polish soldiers and white-red flag.

Polish SU-22 Fitters at Istrana
In 2007, Polish Su-22 Fitters deployed once again to Italy as part of a NATO squadron exchange between the two air forces. Giampaolo Tonello reports.
After last year's squadron exchange (see Polish Air Force Su-22 Fitters at Amendola), which was the first between the Areonautica Militare Italiana (AMI - Italian Air Force) and the Sily Powietrzne (Polish Air Force), 2007 saw the Polish Fitters again operating from an Italian air base. This time it was Istrana AB, home of the 51° Stormo hosting the 103° and 132° Gruppo. Both squadrons are equipped with the AMX.
From June 29th until July 12th three Su-22M4 single-seaters and one Su-22UM3K two-seaters from 7 ELT (7 Eskadry Lotnictwa Taktyczego - 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron) operated together with both the 103° and 132° Gruppo flying operational training missions such as DACT (Dissimilar Air Combat Training) and CAS (Close Air Support), in support of integration of NATO standards in the Polish Air Force. Two missions were flown daily, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
During the squadron exchange one of the Polish pilots reached 1,000 hours flying the Su-22 and a little “shower” awaited him on his return to base.
The 7 ELT is based at Powidz and is equipped with single-seat Su-22M4 'Fitter-K' and two-seat SU-22UM3K 'Fitter-G' conversion trainers. Some of the former 6 ELT Su-22s are still flown by 7 ELT, retaining the old 6 ELT badge on fin as the seen on the two-seater. 6 ELT is currently undergoing conversion to the new F-16C/D Block 52+ having moved to Poznan-Krzesiny AB. The 'Fitters' are scheduled to fly until 2010-2012 and then the unit will become a transport squadron flying the C-130 Hercules.

Interesting. I have never seen so many American troops training together with Poles. But again,
"the Illinois National Guard and Poland represent a mature SPP relationship that has benefited both partners and seen their troops training and fighting side-by-side."
"Stood up in 1993, Illinois and Poland was one of the first National Guard state partnerships. On average, the Illinois National Guard and the Polish military conduct 10 events every year."
They have been serving with Poles in Iraq, they augment our forces in Afghanistan, they have helped to train our F-16 pilots. On the other hand the partnership program helps the Illinois state to curb their high school dropouts problem, and they have learned something from Poles about peace mission techniques.
See the May 29, 2007 article: "Bolstered by European successes, State Partnership Program looks to Africa", http://jim-greenhill.us/?p=259, and then scroll down to the section: Case Study: Illinois and Poland

A night patrol. Polish soldiers go out on night patrols in the Sharana region. From the hills nearby they observe the enemy movements and watch for possible attempts to plant IDEs. The patrols are carried in complete darkness. The soldiers move with the help of night vision devices.

Negative marlowe, the shoulder patch worn by this soldier is that of US 7th Army. He is an active-duty soldier from JMTC Hohenfels, Germany.
Yes flanker7, the PASGT helmet can still be found in various Army units, not to mention Reserve and National Guard as well. (The ACH/MICH has not totally replaced the PASGT helmet.)

Thanks for clarification! I thought he is from NG, because of the information on Polish Ministry of National Defence site: it said, that all US soldiers, who participated in that exercise were from Illinois National Guard.

You are welcome, glad to be helpful.
The soldier shown is an O/C, Observor/Controller from JMTC (Joint Manuver Training Center) His duties are to be an "umpire" during unit rotations at Hohenfels. And it looks as though he has traveled to Polaska to conduct the same duties. OC's also provide AAR's, After Action Reports to the participating units, such as what they did right, what they did wrong, and where they need to improve.

I stopped posting anything that qualifies as "a story" to this thread, after being criticized for polluting this "Strictly photos and videos" thread with text. So, "News ..." is meant as a complementary thread to this one, but without any such limitation. Some inconvenience, in the cases like this, but ...
And about Mesko and Spieke-LR. A representative of the Israeli company, who was present during final tests this summer and the formal licencing of Mesko for production of Spike-LR, suggested that there should be some negotiations re Spike-ER.

AFAIK helicopters will have Spike ER.

Yes it is from Afghanistan. What tipped You of ? the pro-tec helmet and the camo pianted Beryl ?
(no patches on the uniform btw).
Catch22
09-28-2007, 06:24 PM
Basic clues for the common eye:
- Raised forward Eotech mount
- Old Janysport PSK vest
- No flags or patches on the uniform sleeves (common practice in the 1st Regiment while in the theatre)
As for your question Manuel:
Polish army has several models of issue service boots most of which are terrible shiat in terms of ergonomic or comfort. Basically there are 3 of them: standard black ones, winter goretex insulated model (orignally quite decent, but since some production was contracted to inferior manufacturers the quality dropped), desert ones (relatively ok, but not up to modern standards).
Generally it's popular practice to use privately purchased boots that might pass the under the superior eye - some purchase lightweight Magnums, some German issue army boots (great quality for an issue model), others - in Iraq and Afghanistan people usually buy modern American army issue boots - Bellevilles and such.
With our special forces things as usually vary but these days most GROM and GSP Formoza wear German made Meindls (especially Desert Fox and Safari models) in 1st Regiment there were some Asolos recently purchased.

If i'm not misteken soldier shown on this pic wears standard tactical vest issued for every memeber of Polish battalion in Afganistan. Don't you think if he were SF operator he would have chosen better one?

Yeah if You do look at it, it does look like something else than a Pro-Tec. TC-2002 or something like that maybe ?
Catch22
09-28-2007, 06:47 PM
It is a painted Protec ACE, and it isn't a standard PKW vest (this one is a old Janysport model used in PSK, not a KT/KP-12 derivative purchased from diffrent sources for the regular units in the contingent) worn over "lend-leased" IBA in woodland.
Ravage, do you have anymore pics related to the one you posted? Thanks.

According to the www.dziennik.pl website article this picture were attached to, this guy is from 18 air assault battalion. But it's just the newspaper; they can put any pic into any article and they don't care if it shows described situation.
and it isn't a standard PKW vest (this one is a old Janysport model used in PSK, not a KT/KP-12 derivative purchased from diffrent sources for the regular units in the contingent) worn over "lend-leased" IBA in woodland. In my opinion it's not possible to find out what kind of vest this soldier is wearing. We need higher resolution. The only thing we can be sure this vest has "woodland pantera" pattern, and the pattern of bulletproof vest worn underneath seems to be US woodland (so it probably is Interceptor).
Catch22
09-29-2007, 08:32 AM
Mike, I am able to distinguish several details that provide me all the neccessary information to tell what kind of tactical vest is he wearing. And the vest itself has no pattern since its, mesh-based. The only pattern you see are the pouches attached to it.
Few clues
- very small back panel
- side openings laced with paracord (very outstretched in the given pic to fit over the IBA)
- double webbing straps on the vest suspenders
This one, as seen in Today's Pic's few months ago on PSK lads in Iraq

PS. I won't argue if the guy on the pic is from 18th Batt or 1st Regiment cause it doesn't really matter for me (I know guys from both units who use verysimiliar equipment). I was just pointing out several details that might help those trying to ID his unit.

Exactly!
The related story was reported by Polskie Radio, on September 25, http://www.polskieradio.pl/iar/news/artykul3058770.html. I translated it as post #235 in the "News ..." thread. The guys involved were from Battle Team Charlie on routine patrol near Wazi-Khwa.
As I see it, a "Fakt" reporter asked the Polish soldier to pose for this "trophy" picture. The least we show it the better. Tasteless, good for private collection, but nothing else. "Fakt" screwed up its follow up report, and Dziennik reprinted it. I am disappointed with Dziennik.
Let me compare both reports:
Polskie Radio: A routine patrol was attacked by 20 Taliban riding motorcycles, 20 km SE of Wazi-Khwa.
Dziennik: After receiving information about Taliban motorcyclists, most probably from UAV, our brave boys were sent after them.
Do you see the difference? How long does it take to drive 20 km off road from the base, watching for mines all the time? One hour? And in meantime the Taliban were having lunch or some kind of the country meeting out in the open, waiting for Poles to find them? What a nonsense!
Do you want to see more of this sort of journalism? Same Dziennik article:
"40-degrees heat, desert landscape, villages full of hostile stares and roads spiked with explosives."
(...)
"[B]Almost every day the terrorist attack them. They most often shoot at (our soldiers) with rifles and grenade launchers."
Somehow we do not hear such reports almost every day, unless "Fakt" reporters are around.

Are You able? I'm not. Not on so low res pic.
And the vest itself has no pattern since its, mesh-based. The only pattern you see are the pouches attached to it.
Which vest? "PSK Janysport"? That's correct. The vest worn by the soldier from this pic? Can't say, it's not possible to recognize... Just like You wrote, the only pattern we can see are on the pouches (and on the flackjacket underneath of course). But that doesn't mean, that there are no pattern on this vest.
Few clues
- very small back panel
Is the size of the "PSK Janysport vest" back panel so diffrent then the back panels of the many other kind of vest (like KT12 for example)?
- side openings laced with paracord (very outstretched in the given pic to fit over the IBA).
Sorry, but can You really see paracord? I can't.
- double webbing straps on the vest suspenders . Can You count the number of webbing straps? I can't.
I won't argue if the guy on the pic is from 18th Batt or 1st Regiment cause it doesn't really matter for me (I know guys from both units who use verysimiliar equipment). I was just pointing out several details that might help those trying to ID his unit.
Of course, but in my opinion You just have decided that soldier shown on the pic wears "PSK Janysport vest" and are trying to prove it. I think, that's not possible to find out which kind of vest is he wearnig (I wrote earlier, that he is wearing "standard PKW A vest"; i cancel it - it's not possible to recognize what kind of tactical vest is he waering).

Well, that is not what I meant. It was just as a small anecdote (from one of the seminars with Eyal), not a dispute who, when, or why invented Krav Maga. No need to get upset.

What I understand, some of them are the military police from the Special Unit in Gliwice, going to the Chad and CAR mission later this year. This seems to be a presentation of their abilities in their headquarters in Minsk Mazowiecki.
The Polish Military Contingent (PMC) to Chad and CAR is made of 150 persons: three platoons from Gliwice special unit, 4 civilians, and the rest are the soldiers from the 10th Logistic Brigade - assuring a direct communication with the home country, among other tasks.
PMC will be mainly used for protection of VIPs and UN officers.

According to latest news Poland is going to send 350 soldiers to Chad... But this needs to be confirmed.

It seems that you are right, Switek - Polish "Dziennik" mentions 350 soldiers, but what's more - this has been already proposed by President Kaczyński a week ago in a meeting in Paris. Here is an article in English, from Africa:
