Draftee Piotr Piotrkowicz puts on his uniform for the first time at the air force base in Radom last week. For Poland, moving to a professional army is just one step among many that the country is taking in the process to revamp its military forces from a 450,000-man force to a lean, well-equipped military that can quickly deploy to the world's trouble spots as part of multinational missions. Hey mack I didn't mean he's from GROM :). I asked because I honestly have no bloody idea what unit is he from, but noticed that cool uniform.

I know, but my point was that just because someone wears some funky gear doesn't mean anything, he can be from any unit. Untill you see some arm patch you will not be able to recognize the unit. Only GROM or MJDS uses different rifles, so its easy to recognise them.

a) looks like an American soldier from CIMIC attached to Polish unit. He wears ppantera wz.93 pants couse he got (bought, exchanged) the to look more Polish because of many reasons (bad US PR in the village, four example).

b) can be a Polish soldier who bought, exchanged some items witch his US counterparts cous he dosen't trust in our GI equipement (what is very common among Polish troops).

I really do not see anything unusuall in that picture. Uniform regulations die as first in the battiefield zone. p-)

this is iba-or-somethinglikethis vest. Polish b-vests are obsolete and canot protect them from 7.62 AK bullet. So when poles come to afganistan they move to px shops (ami shops with mil stuff yep ? :)?) and buy US vest. First guy on the right has got IBA in woodland under KT-12.
Btw. Hello all, this my first post :]

I wonder, there should be no problem to buy outside part of the vest in polish camouflage (pantera or pustynna pantera), I saw something like this for interceptor.

hmmm never heard of anything like it... Give some examples if you can :)
Otherwise ive seen many hand-made stuffs like tac. vests, bags, uniforms and so on. So probably there are some men making their own outside :)
And interesting thing about vests. Ive talked with a soldier. He was in Iraq and Afgani. He said that even 2 vest canot stop 7.62 mm bullet.

You mean polish vests?
Well if he mean lubawa ones i don't know any details about the resistance level.
IBA can handle 7.62 easily(seen that svd sniper wich couldn't kill a guy in a iba? soldier just fall on the ground and stand up after 2 seconds and ran away) but all is about the plates in it.
Sorry for my english

"It is designed for soldier's personal protection against the shot bullets, especially against 9mm bullets of PARABELLUM FMJ with lead core coming at the hit velocity of 358 + 15 metres per second. With its reinforcing plate it protects against bullets PS 7,62mm coming from short battle rifles AK at the hit velocity of 710 + 20 metres per second."-lubawa homepage. From that what i see it gives protect against 7.62x39 bullets wich have lower velocity than 730 m/s?
when the typical ak47 rifle bullet goes about 715 m/s.
Well good to know

it says "Overseas deployment has also put wear and tear on equipment. Poland has 1,200 troops involved in combat operations in Afghanistan: a mission that has stretched the army's resources to the limit."

How true is that... ?

Not quite, we have 1600 in Afganistan and 400 in Chaad, and some smaller groups in other places.

Since deployment Iraq we have around 2000-2500 soldiers in combat areas at all time (and it is all we can send) but on the other hand same time we have adoptedd some new (an expensive) weapons like Spike ATGM, KTO Rosomak APC or F-16.

It's not good, but it's not that bad eighter.

The truth is that Land Forces are divided into two types of units, hi and low readiness units. Hi randiness have some new (or "new" like second hand Leopards 2) weapons systems, professional soldiers etc. Low readiness units have old weapons and till very recently were based on conscripts.

Care to explain to us vulgar folk why polish SF are dumb enough to pursue something for 10 years they don't need, and why you almighty know best what they do need and what they do not need?

Ravage
03-10-2009, 07:23 AM
Ask your self this: how are you gonna get them on site ? Little Bird lifts have many limitations, you cant use them every time and every where.
And two, those are noting more than OH-6 Loaches taken from the Army and NG in the 1980s.

All of them have at best 30 years of servise. They are not mass produced like a UH-60 or a AH-64. Also, why is only the 160th using them ? The Canadians, Australians and Brits have their own SOA, a lot longer than we will have - why arent they using them ? Their customers did time with the 160th, along with A and B co of the 1st Battalion (Little Bird units).
Also, there is a lot more to that aircraft than just the bird and its pilots.

Also youd have to really stupid to think the US is just gonna give them to us.

We don't need them because we would not have any means with which to deploy them any where, we would need to ask the US to help us get them where we might need them.

Or we could just buy them and let them sit on the tarmac, look nice on the internetz.

Oh and no, our SOF are not dumb enough, you are - if you belive some dumbass reporter.

Beatkunedo
03-10-2009, 07:43 AM
"We dont need them because we dont have means to deploy them" - yeah, thats really an argument why we DO NOT NEED THEM.

"How will we get them on site" is exactly the same question that people dispatching polish SF units ask themselves all the time.
Everytime GROM is to be dispatched quickly, they have to aks other coalition countries for choppers, they do not have any other means of transport.
Finally, after 12 years, they will have their own transport - thats one of the best things that ever happened to them.

How we are gonna get them on site? The way we do with all the rest of the gear we use. We did somehow get the polish APVs, MI Helis into Iraq and Afganistan.

If Delta put them to exellent use, what makes you thing, GROM wouldnt?
Missions performed by both units are of the same type.

Beatkunedo
03-10-2009, 08:15 AM
Well, we both agree, Poland does need a special aviation group to support special forces.
However, I do not understand, what you are trying to say with the rest of your post. That Littlebirds are what? Not up-to-date anymore, nor suitable for the job or what?

Ravage
03-10-2009, 08:34 AM
Well, somewhat yes. What type of ac do we need ? Little Birds are short range helicopters. In Afghanistan the 160th is mainly using its MH-47 fleet, because of the terrain. The deal is different in Iraq. Look at the units history, Little Birds were used in many operations but not all of them.
Do we need short range helos ? Or should we invest in what other units did (Australians, Canadians) - medium and long range transportation (the Blackhawk and the Chinook for example).
SOA is a giant money vacum. And our military is not that rich.

Yeah, we need helicopters for our boys. That has been long over due, but grabing every cool looking gadget will not help us.

Where do you think we would get them from ? As I stated before, the MH-6M and the AH-6M are OH-6 Loaches of the Vietnam era. They went through many, many modiffications throughout the 160th Regiments history. Yet their mission has not changed, only the airframe got older, and older. Those mechanics are pure wizards, keeping them in shape.

The US stoped using them (OH-6) in the mid 1980s if I'm not mistaken. As I stated before, where we would get them from ? The 160th SOAR(A) ? are you kidding....

Little Birds (unfortunatly there were no infos on which type of Little Bird we would get - the lifts or the guns) in Afghanistan did command and control and security when Rangers, and other SOCOM units, were taking over the airfields at the start of OEF. Now they are puting customers on rooftops in Iraq (and from what I've read on other boards, they don't do that too often).

Beatkunedo
03-10-2009, 09:41 AM
Jesus Christ, people.
Everyone knows we have a poor army.
The statement was - we dont need small birds.
WE DO NEED THEM.
Thats what Im saying.
And whether we will get 10 Blackhawks or 9 Blackhawks and 2 Littlebirds or 6 Blackbirds, 1 Chinook and 2 Littlebirds doesnt make such a difference in pricing, does it? Each of those helis has different qualities.
Moreover the "end user" isnt a Littlebird fetichist, he doesnt give a rats ass whether those small birds will be the MH-6M, the AH-6M, the SOS-1 or NBA-09, it important they get small, manouvreable helis.

Actually it does matter a lot. Because you need birds for teaching the basic TTP and SOP. To add to that you need birds for multiple areas of operations. Right now we are involved in Afghanistan - show me where do we would use them Little Birds in a mountain terrain like Afghanistan ?

The 160th is operating there since the start of OEF, and they (20 years plus of SOA combat operations) are using the MH-47, not the 'smooth' Little Birds and the 'sexy' Blackhawks. Like it sad in Durrants book "this is our (Chinook crews) war".

You wanna use them in an urban terrain? Go ahead, but you'd better have a FARP not too far away because those swift and sexy birds are gonna drop like stones when the gas tank runs dry. Little Birds lifts are used for short actions in close quaters - Acid Gambit, Gothic Serpent, rescue of pfc. Lynch, maritime interdiction operations like those of op. Prime Chance in the Persian Gulf.

The Little Bird is not a Blackhawk or an Apache.

Ok, Ravage, since you are obviously one of those guys who ask for arguments, and them ignores them since they could hurt your overgrown ego, I ll write down the arguments once more, for the last time.

First of all - you started of with the authoritarian statement that polish SF do not need chppers like the Littlebirds.
Im am telling you right now, again - Polish SF were in need of such helis for a long time (and for other, like the Black Hawk or Chinook).
Yes, polish SF do need small, maneuvreable helis, whether you personally like it or not.
The fact we are to get such helicopters is not the result of political gifts between the US and Poland, but the result of long years of SF lobbying for such helis. And since they already signed the agreement about it, it seems they have the means to finance them. And stop with the "Oh we are soo poor". GROM is, aside from the choppers, one of the better equipped units in the world.

Your answer was dumb, not my qestion. Two, you have yet to provide an answer.

Which words of the sentence didnt you understand?
What to deliver manpower for a job means?
Or what the term direct action means?
You are at home in the internet, Im sure youll be able to look up those terms on the net.

We dont have fixed wing birds in which to transport them all over the globe. A
Again, read my post. Polish army managed to get APVs to Asia, they wont have problems with small choppers.

Americans have an entire company of Little Bird lifts, and they work with allied SOF.

Well buddy, thats the difference between thinking you know something and knowing it for real.
What you wrote is partly true. Partly means yes, sometimes they get transport from Americans, sometimes they dont, and sometimes it takes so long to organize a heli, that the target gets away.
In any case, such a high profile unit shouldnt have to be dependent from others. Whether we are asking for Black Hawks (hmm, why did you say we needed them in the beginning, if we get such a great transport from the Americans??) or other helis.

Also, where would you get them from ? (the MH-6/AH-6 that is)

Again, I answered this question once already, start reading my posts so I dont have to write everthing twice for you.
It does not matter whether it would be Littlebirds, or any other small heli with similiar qualities. Im sure there are enough companies producing such helis.
Aside from that, problems with getting them does not mean we dont need them.
And again, since such a treaty was signed, maybe - only maybe, the Americans will be able to procure such helis.

Keep dreaming fella.
What the heck is this supposed to mean? I dont have to dream. Again - start reading carefully.
The article linked two pages back states clearly we will get those copters.

Actually it does matter a lot. Because you need birds for teaching the basic TTP and SOP. To add to that you need birds for multiple areas of operations. Right now we are involved in Afghanistan - show me where do we would use them Little Birds in a mountain terrain like Afghanistan ?

Here we go again - if you would have read the article linked, you would know polish pilots will be trained in the US.
Then you go to Poland and use them. Whether you have 2 or 4 birds, doesnt matter. Ten years ago GROM had its own chopper - ONE! chopper, and they got along.
About Astan - gee, so by this logic GROM should sell all their zodiacs, diving equipment and maritime gear because right now we are not using them? Grow up..

You wanna use them in an urban terrain?
Jees, kid, again, grow up.
I dont want to use them.
Polish SF need to use them. They know very well what they ll use them for.
You decided to spread untrue information in this topic, Im telling you, you have no idea about the real world conditions (like in your 160 fly polish SF all the time) and im setting your disinformation right.
I dont need to profile myself through producing hundreds of posts, Im just correcting your untrue and authoritarian statements.

So, you can ask the same questions again a third time, but do not wonder then, that Im not going to answer them a third time.
Im telling you - Kid, you do not know, what polish SF need, or dont need, so dont sell your internet-read-based made up opinions as authoritarian statements in a "final one and only truth way".

We are sending additional forces to Afghanistan - 400 soldiers, 32 Rosomaks, more UAVs, 2 more helicopters.

In total we will have 2000 soldiers, around 100 Rosomaks, 40 Couguar MRAPs, 10 helicopters,5 Dana howitzers.

What is more interesting under Polish command will serve 200 soldiers from... Mongolia (remember them from Iraq?) very good soldiers, very good news.

5 Dana howitzers is a very strange number. Apart from being simply ridiculous how for so large area to protect, I wonder why that number is not a multiplier of 2 or 4. 6 or 8 or 10 howitzers would be something normal while the number of 5 is simply odd. Is it a single battery plus 1 gun or 5 single guns deployed in different areas?

That's the greatest news, I've heard this month.

AFAIK Danas are only for FOB White Eagle protection.
And most important news are that the 1200 of Polish Soldiers are in battles group, today only 500 rest is logistics etc. Now in every Polish Contingent more then half of soldiers dot to be in battle groups.

In the spring the Americans will move against the Taliban and they will start fleeing right into the Poles. 'Things will get tough for the Poles, but I can't help it. Everybody's got a job to do here', says the commander of US troops near Kabul.

The 1,600 Polish troops in Ghazni province are in for an exceptionally stormy spring and summer. US forces will be pushing the Taliban our of the Kabul region and the south of the country. Lacking any other route, the Taliban will be retreating to the Polish-controlled Ghazni province.

'I've just warned the Polish commanders that they'll have their hands full', says Col David Haight, commander of US troops in the provinces Wardak and Logar near Kabul.

'We'll help them only if we can, but my job is to beat and chase away the Taliban from under the gates of Kabul. The Poles' task will be to deal with the insurgents in Ghazni'.

Col Haight, who has a service record in Iraq and Afghanistan, returned to the Afghani war in January with 3,500 men to tip the balance in the war against the Taliban. His 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division was originally to go to Baghdad, but was sent instead to Logar and Wardak to defend the country's strategically important routes - Road no. 1 from Kabul through Ghazni to Kandahar, and Road no. 2 from Kabul to Gardez.

Inhabited by half a million people, with elevations exceeding 3,000 metres, the mountainous Wardak province lies an hour's drive south-west of Kabul. It is one of the poorest and most backward parts of Afghanistan. The province capital, Meydan Shahr, looks like a big village hat has sprung up around a market place by the Road no. 1. There are no other roads here.

Wardak has never been a Taliban stronghold. In autumn 2001, US troops took control of it without firing a single shot. The Taliban fled south to Kandahar, and then to Pakistan. Some of the local warlords went into service with the government, others returned to wage a holy war against the Americans. Still others formed bandit gangs robbing travellers on the Road no. 1. The most famous of those was Mullah Nissam, who kidnapped and murdered a German engineer.

Taking advantage of the fact that only a small garrison of US and Turkish troops had been stationed in Wardak, the bandits became more self-confident. Robberies and ransom kidnappings were ever more frequent, as were feuds between the Kuchi nomads and the Khazar farmers, who did not let the former travel through their fields and water their camels in their wells.

The Taliban returned to Wardak last year. Moving towards Kabul, they passed through Ghazni province, which Polish troops have been responsible for since last autumn. By mid-2008, the Taliban had secured control of half of Wardak and threatened Road no. 1. They planted mines that exploded under trucks carrying supplies for the Western troops and staged ambushes, killing Afghani policemen and American soldiers.

Seriously worried, the Washington leaders sent more troops to Afghanistan. The Americans quickly got down to work and by February had driven the Taliban from the counties closest to Kabul. Mullah Nissam died in an ambush.

'Come spring, the Taliban will start returning from their hideouts on the Pakistani side of the border, and we will meet them halfway, says Col Haight. 'Last year they ruled here. But now there'll be three times as many US troops here, plus I have over 2,000 Afghani soldiers under my command.'

Col Haight's soldiers are to drive the Taliban from the counties Sayyed Abad and Jaghatu. Beyond them starts the Polish-controlled Ghazni province.
