The spanish journalist Ricardo Ortega was killed yesterday, sunday, while he was covering for the TV channel Antena 3 a demostration of Aristide´s opposers when the demostration was shooted by hidden snippers of Aristide´s followers. When a journalist was injured, Ricardo and other journalists tried to bring him into a house and was then when Ricardo got two shoots, in the chest and in the belly. In resume, 5 people were killed and 26 wounded yesterday in 5 minutes in Haiti.
Ricardo Ortega is the 3º spanish journalist killed in the last 12 months, 2 other journalist were killed in Irak war, one of them by an Abraham´s shoot when he was in Hotel Palestine and the other one when he was embedded in an american unit close to Bagdad. In almost every significant conflict since 1980, 9 spanish journalist have been killed. I´m afraid I can state spanish public opinion is well informed about foreing wars, included Irak of course, by the best news workers, contrary to what spanish politicians can say.
Btw, I liked Ricardo Ortega, he was a quiet and balanced journalist, he was 37 years old, and when he was correspondent in Moscow he became a war journalist covering Chechenia War, after that he covered all major conflicts, and even he was able of interviewing Ahmed Sha Masud in Afghanistan. In 2001 he was correspondent in New York, where he covered the 11/9, RIP.
