Hi Guys,

I've done a search on the forum for Luxembourg soldiers and came up with the dress uniform pic and some peacekeeping pics with the Belgians, but does anyone have any detailed pics or shots of cam out there?

Tried Google, but got nada! ;)

Thanks fellas ;)

Recently i spend a few days in Luxembourg. Wow, i'm surprised that they have anything close to an "army". The country has 400.000+ inhabitants. I wonder what kind of army they have. Any more infos? Cooperating, contributing to another army and getting protection in exchange? I don't see a country smaller then my hometown (by inhabitants) running a complete infrastructure of bases and hardware. Who is involved in their military? The Belgians, too?

Yeah lol they have Europe's smallest military. It's made up of less than 1,000 people, ~200 of which are civilian employees. What I find amazing is that they have managed to send peacekeeping forces to both Kosovo and Afghanistan.

Yeah we co-operate with Luxembourg alot, they're also going to station their A400M here. I think most of their missions are done with the Belgian Military.

Luxembourg has a professional army since the '70s.
It is one batallion strong, and the active part are 2x recce/atk squadrons equipped with Humvee/TOW's.

Officers are trained both in France and in Belgium.
NCO's are trained in Belgium, in Dinant.
Troops are trained in luxembourg off course.

Luxembourg has sent troops as part of belgian contingents to most of the missions the belgians undertook starting with a platoon of infantry in Korea, with squads/platoons in Croatie, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afganistan/ISAF.

Luxembourg bought one A-400M airplane, this plane will be stationned with the belgian 15th Wing in Melsbroek, with a luxembourg crew and technicians.

In the cold war Luxembourg supplied an AMF batallion to Nato.

The only Infantry battalion is in fact strongly understrength with 300+ soldiers serving.
The 1000 man figure is outdated and included the total strength of Army,Police and Gendarmerie Grand-Ducale (the later two have now merged into the Police Grand-Ducale).

Till 1967 we had conscription but since then we have been an all volunteer force. Officers and NCO's are professionals and serve untill the age of 55.

Other ranks engage for three years with the possibility to reengage for several times.

Officers are trained alternately at ERM in Brussels or at St.- Cyr. NCO's in Dinant in Belgium.

Specialized training is done with several NATO armies.
Medical service NCO's in France.
Jump training at Altenstedt for the enlisted, France or Belgium for the Officers (in the 80 s many had the opportunity to get US jumpwings as the LU Army did a lot of training together with 10th SFG)
TOW crew get their training with the german paras in Merzig.

Weapons issued are

FN Hipower 9mm Pistol
Steyr Aug A1
Steyr Aug-HBAR
M2 HB .50 Machine Gun

M-72 A 2 Law
L 16 A2 81 mm Mortar
TOW BGM-71

There is one Garrison in the " Caserne Grand-Duc Jean" barracks Diekirch, a shooting range in Bleesdall, a few miles to the north of Diekirch and an ammo depot (which will be shut down shortly) in Waldhof a few miles outside the capital of Luxemburg City.

They use US Woodland BDU's, except for the ISAF contingent, which uses Belgium camo fatigues.

They don't have an MP or Provost Marshall unit. It's just the ordinary soldiers who are on guard duty that act as PR (Police régimentaire) under the command of the Duty Officer and Duty Nco.
Alltough any Mayor or the Police can request the help of the Army if there is civil unrest. As far as I know it happened just once, in 1991, when there were several hundred German football hooligans on the rampage ( Lu police did get a tip off from the German BKA, so we were prepared in advance).

Cheers mates

Don't forget that Luxemburg has I think also Veterans. The ASORL organises a night patrol every year in Luxemburg. So looks like the guys stay bound to the military. Thats also in/around Bleesdall.

In 69 on a Northern Defense of NATO Exercise in Denmark, I remember seeing the Luxembourg contingent. If I remember properly it was two (2) jeeps with .50 cal or the equivalent mounted and they were a recce group. I'm not sure how many personel per jeep but I know it was 2 for sure, possibly 3. Also there was a rumour that the Canadian Govt had loaned them 155 mm towed guns sufficient for a Bty. Which were returned to the Canadians in Germany in 67 (at least that was the story going around when the guns turned up in Fort Prince of Wales in Germany). Up till then the RCHA always had 105 mm towed only.

Up till then the RCHA always had 105 mm towed only.

Those guns were 25 pdrs. on loan from Canada, that had been recalibrated into 105 mm howitzers in 1955 in the Arsenal of the Belgium Army. From the 19th of August 1963 till the 20th of December 1967 those guns, 18 on active duty and 6 on reserve, were organized as the 1st Artillery Battalion (Luxembourg) of the 8th US Inf.Div. in Baumholder.
I can't confirm or deny if the guns turned up in Fort Prince of Wales but my sources tell me that the Canadian Gov. didn't want the guns back so they were turned over to the Belgians for instruction purposes.

As national service was abolished in 1967 from then on the strength of the LU army always vascillated around an understrengthened Battalion, so it is very well possible that the AMF conigent in the Exercise was very "weak". Later on the AMF-contingent consisted of a recce company with mounted TOW and .50's.

Looks like M81 woodland for sure. US cut of the clothing. Lack of ranks on the shoulders could even mean that they are not locally produced but directly purchased in the US.

The dutch Marine Corps purchases the trousers in M81 woodland also. Although they are now switching to locally produced ones because the US supply is unreliable since they need so much themselves these days and they are also completely switching to the digital camouflages.

Perhaps luxumbourg will be faced with the same problem and I'm interesting in what move they will make. Will they start to produce their own or will they purchase other uniforms. Possibly US woodland made in the netherlands or will they switch to begian camouflage? Anyone has any info on this?

All our BDU's were purchased straight from the US. At the moment they are choosing a new pattern to replace the Woodland BDU's. Haven't heard anything from the grapevine yet, but I would not be surprised if it would be the belgian camo pattern.

The army is looking for new armoured vehicles, they bought new sights for the Steyr , new night vision equipment and there is also talk about replacing the old ALICE LBE, ALICE packs have already been replaced.

Thales to Deliver Tactical Reconnaissance Vehicles for Luxembourg Army
The Luxembourg Ministry of Defence mandated the NATO Maintenance & Supply Agency (NAMSA) to conduct the competitive procurement procedure for this programme. Prime contractor responsibility was awarded to Thales. The company will deliver 48 vehicles by the end of 2010.
The PRV contract will provide the Luxembourg military with a tactical reconnaissance capability that is particularly well suited to allied operations. Key requirements include the interoperability of the solution under development, combined with mobility, protection and observation capabilities.
Thales drew on its high-level expertise in complex systems for land forces and key references in vehicle systems to propose an integrated and scalable solution that meets the stringent operational performance criteria of the Luxembourg Army. The company's know-how in interoperability and proven ability to manage programmes to short deadlines were also decisive factors in the final selection.
The vehicles will be equipped with:
A protection system based on the Protector remote-operated turret from Kongsberg, combined with laser detection systems and smoke grenade launchers.
A complete observation system, including a long-range system integrated with a telescopic mast (already selected by France and Belgium), guaranteeing protection, discretion and rapid deployment thanks to all-weather optronic sensors and an off-vehicle surveillance system with Sophie MF handheld thermal cameras
A C4I system based on proven HF/VHF communication equipment (PR4G, TRC 3700 HF) and a tactical situation awareness system (T-BMS) to allow vehicle integration with an interoperable reconnaissance unit.
These subsystems will be interconnected via an innovative open electronic architecture called the Open Information Communication System, designed to optimise integration and enable information exchange both within vehicles and externally. This innovative architecture reduces integration risks, speeds up the tempo of operations, manages all platform systems in real time and allows optimised support services.

These Should give the Luxembourg Army quite a big boost in protection for Peacekeeping and other NATO roles:)

NCO's are trained in Saffraanberg(St-Truiden)(9months), then they have to go to Arlon for 13 weeks and then they have the same recce education as the belgian recce's in Leopoldsburg. (+/-5 months)

It's brand new, I haven't seen anyone wearing it in country, only theKFOR contingent is wearing it.

They have passed an order to get NFM from Norway make the same BALCS as the Belgian army uses in the new camo pattern.

They also replaced the FN GP aka Browning Hi Power with Glocks last year.

Hi Mate,

Thanks for the Info, I must admit i thought Luxembourg would wait to see what Belgium did concerning a new Camo Pattern as the 2 armies work so closely together and with Luxembourg Soldiers using and wearing Belgian Kit on some deployments.

Still its good to see the Luxembourg Army keeping its own identity, and I do like the new Camo :) Any idea when it will be on general Issue ?

I am interested in learning of the "social" of the military and police forces. So ask these questions. What is the salary of a Luxembourg-based soldier? Defendant is a career for young people?, I know that to join the police you must have been in the Army, are earning more salary in the Police in the Army? . Thank you very much in advance if you want to know something about thethe Spanish Guardia Civil, here I am .-

Salaries vary inbetween "Volontaires" = enlisted voluntary soldiers, "sous officiers" = professional NCO's and "Officiers".

Enlisted soldiers

Soldat: 1.456.- EUR BRUT
Soldat 1ere classe: 1.547.- EUR BRUT
Soldat-Chef: 1.708.- EUR BRUT
1er Soldat-Chef: 1.903.- EUR BRUT

Enlisted soldiers on deployment

Soldat: 2.427.- EUR BRUT
Soldat 1ere classe: 2.517.- EUR BRUT
Soldat-Chef: 2.679.- EUR BRUT
1er Soldat-Chef: 2.872.- EUR BRUT

& 1.890.- € bonus per month when they are on deployment.

I haven't found any numbers on NCO's and officers pay.

The Police Grand-Ducale doesn't recruit exclusively from the army anymore.

EDIT:

I found the pay of NCO's and Officers:

NCO's start at 3.500.- €

Officers start at 5.000.- €

Both amounts are before taxes.

Thank you very much. He understood that it should serve two years in the Army for admission to the Grand Ducal Police. Could you get the salaries of the Police? .

It used to be that way, but during the haydays of the economic boom of the last twenty years it was difficult to find army volunteers with the necessary qualifications! So they changed it, nowadays most polivce officers have A levels and are recruited directly from school, they then have a basic training with a similar curriculum to the military basic training.

Regarding pay I can give you an example of a police NCO friend of mine, 42 years old, married, one kid, 25 years of service (army included) gets around 4500€ net per month.

EDIT: please bear in mind that living costs, especially housing prices, in Luxembourg are very very high.......comparable to London and Paris

I also had my money on the belgian camo....:-)....I can't tell you when the new one will be in general use. I will keep you updated!

Thanks that would be great :)

Do you know if along with the new Camo uniforms there are any plans to replace the ALICE webbbing the Army still uses with something more modern ?

Thank you very much. The salaries I see are very high compared with that of the National Police and Civil Guard in Spain (guard or police officer based on 1,600 euros). An average dwelling in Spain cost an average 200,000 euros (Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and San Sebastian more) .-

They will get the same combination of modular load bearing vest / body armour as the belgian army uses, made by NFM from Norway. There will ba a woodland camo version as well as a desert camo version.

BTW: the ISAF contingent has also switched over to the new desert camo! I've seen pics of it oin the printed newspapers.

Up till after WW2 the Luxembourg Army was called "Fräiwoellege Kompanie", Volunteers Company. The international treaties that defined the conditions regarding the creation of an independant Luxembourgish state prescribed a maximum strength of 140 men for the Luxembourgish armed forces.

In WW2 the company strength "Fräiwoellege Kompanis"were the first to be forced into the Wehrmacht.

After your comments I have been back and checked all 222 photos I have posted on here and found 12 that are double posts or Repeats. So could you point out 'the many repeated pictures, in particular posted by member vor033' to me and I will delete them if the others that like this thread want me to.

I try my best to not repeat photos already posted on here as I really like this thread and all the info that has come up on the Luxembourg Army. And I have to say, if having some double posts keeps this interesting thread going then so be it.

My comments were based on the posts you had placed, if others are guilty of the same thing, then they need to go back and clean up their posts, multiple images, tend to give any thread, a boring and sloppy aspect.

You must admit many of the pictures are repeated through out the thread.

I know if I list the same picture from my folders, that I have previously listed on MP.net I get a pop-up message saying where and when the picture was used. I cant understand how this does not occur to others, unless you are posting pictures others have already uploaded to the thread.

Thank you for taking the time to correct your posts.

Some of the Photos are of the same type and are from the Luxembourg Army Website, especially the Posed Basic Training Graduation Photos, but as they show Insignia and Uniforms of the Army I think they are well worth posting even if they do look much the same.

Anyway, I am glad you enjoy the Photos (even if some are double etc) as the Luxembourg Army its History, Uniforms, Weapons, Equipment and overseas operations is really fascinating p-)

Nice video of the basic training.
Is this regular army? Berghaus, Steyr AUG and Humvee
My cup of thee :)

Luxembourg only has a regular army, no reserves, territorials or national guard.

They were on the Belgian Army website, not many though which is a shame. As photos are getting ahrder to find now,not helped by the Luxembourg Army site not being updated for quite awhile now :-(

I don't know why they are not doing any updates in the photo galleries anymore...I will have to ask around.

Why was there only one guard? you'd think there would be two...

Nice to see the Landmacht Leo2a6 there as well. I've always thought we should get more involved with Luxembourg, based on our historical connection. Quite funny to see the LU army uses the same style of orange banner the Dutch use(though 'ours' tend to be larger.
