When an employer knows he can pay someone below what is acceptable then there is no stopping it. Taxes are not collected and the people who actually pay taxes will have to make up the difference.

I would say 20 percent of my platoon was Mexican and I definately don't feel there is a need to pack up a go back to Europe. Like said earlier, most Mexicans are good folk, and deserved to be treated with respect. Although I think the US needs to toughen the laws, and enforce them, I can understand why a Mexican father would risk his life to make a better life. If my family was in tough times, I would do what's nesessary to help them.. and if that means crossing into oanother country to find work, and support them.. then I would.. but on the other hand, Mexico is a good country, and I feel that people should first try to fix the problems in their own country before running away. Good example.. you try to help a people who asks, and needs help, but while your there they deside to bit the hand that feeds them... I don't think it's the job of the US to help the world, and the like wise, but it's the job of the world to try to first help themselves. Mexico, is a rich country, it's just corrupt.. like a lot of Cenbtral and South America countries... but the people who live there need to help themselves... That said, I have every respect for Mexican Nationals who work in the the USA...legal or otherwise. I have used them for many jobs in construction and they work hard, do an excellent job and are at work every day. In fact, one crew I had, I fired all the Anglos and kept nothing but Mexicans...my work load decreased and my productivity doubled....all I want is for the US Gvt to find a suitable way to let these people work here legally, make employers carry workmen's insurance for them and charge the Mexican Gvt for the medical for the wives and babies they drag over here with them....or force employers to pay the med insurance when they hire them....

OK, here's my solution...

Since everyone is passing around the Teddy Roosevelt Quote, I'll expand upon it rather than simply quoting it.

Dude had it right on the money. Probably one of our greatest Presidents.

What he says about accepting ANYONE that wants to become an "American" is true. We should. That is how we became who we are today. This includes Hispanics. While for the most part, people coming here do adapt and change and become "American", America becomes, in little bits here and there, a tad bit different. Always changing, culturally, for the better in my eyes.

That being said, I am usually stuck, in these conversation, between the people that want to do it the "French Way" where we actually pick a date in time and claim "this is who we are and we WILL preserve this", which is utter nonsense OR the equally asinine "California Hug", a call to hold people's hands making everything bi-lingual and welcome arms embracing the entire portion of their culture.

Both are weak and ill thought out.

One encourages resentment of the nation by the immigrants and rather than having them sort of just slide into society they fight against the flow. By making it more difficult the problem intensifies. No nation can claim a specific "culture", looking over the last thousand years what exactly is each nation's culture? There has been so much change in my life time alone that I can only, simply, "remember the good old days", not that these days are any worse, they are simply different...culturally and economically (we won't get into politics here). When you sit there and claim your culture is somehow better or should not be watered down, you are no better than the radicals claiming the opposite.

The other argument actually encourages the problem by making it easier to come to a nation and survive. By not demanding English as the national language, by not requiring an individual take a citizenship exam in English, by making the day to day things necessary to survive easier, we have made it less likely for immigrants to meet us half way...to become Americans...they simply become watered down version of their former nation or culture.

My great great grandfather came over in the early/mid-1800s. At the time there was no policy requiring them to wait in lines, sign documents, no quotas or limits. He just packed his immediate family up bought passage over and arrived in America. The moment he set foot on shore, he struggled to become an American. He was not a proud German. He was a father of four and a husband an by god, come hell or high water, his family were going to become Americans. One night he told his wife in German, "I do not want to hear another word of German till you can speak English" He never spoke a word of German again and his wife did not speak to him for a month. During that time she learned enough to converse with him and the kids. He knew it would help the family.

So where does this leave me in my opinion?

Why make more laws? Who is going to enforce them? Honestly? No one is enforcing the existing ones. Why would any SMART individual think this would change just because a bunch of politicians added some more paperwork to our government? Fools.

Where are we going to get the money to make the changes? A fence and the people required to staff it are going to cost us millions, with the usual BS of cost over runs and companies skimming off the top. Hell, I bet we even hire illegals to help build it. The irony...and probable truth.

Does a wall help? Are we going to build a wall in Canada then as well? As non-Hispanic immigrants shift to our northern neighbor to migrate south? Are we going to increase coastal patrols and prevent tunnels?

And let's be honest. How many Americans want to spend 30.00 on a bunch of grapes or 4.00 per apple? Because that is what it is going to cost if we hire the (non-existent) American Citizen laborer. Because they will not work for minimum wage to a hot days work. They want 20 or 30.

And that will cost...

So, why don't we just focus on making the existing laws work first before we ADD more. Rather than half-assing it, which has become the norm as of late.

Of course, we can talk about killing every Mexican just because some stupid teacher, or principal, or student (out of millions) has done something reactionary. The irony is pretty amusing, but I doubt it will be seen by most...

Hopefully, it will...things need to change on both sides. We need to become the America with open arms but without coddling these folks. The American dream is earned...be it crossing into the nation legally or not. Its now HOW you got here, its what you do when you arrive.

Most of my family imigrated to America. My great, great grandfather came over escaping the muslims in Syria, and once in the states also stopped speaking Arabic, and only spoke English.. may other side were French Cajun, and with time after moving north from Southern La. today only speak English... Living here in Switzerland /Europe, I've had the chance to see what problems first hand are caused when a culture comes intpo a country, and doesn't adapt to the culture of the host country... people come over, and never (Blend) into the country, they don't even try. Sure some will never except you into their country no matter what you do.. I pay taxes, work hard, and speck the language... what's even funnier is I speck more of CH's 4 languages then most Swiss... anyway, the US is still the Melting Pot... it's just that some of us in the middle need to except this idea, and those that are trying to get in, should try to live at the rim... There are enough laws in the states.. the sooner the Feds, States, and Local Govn't start to infoce the laws that already excist, the better all can be.
