So I get a call today, "Hey, whadday doin? We're cooking out tonight at so' and so's" What time? "7:30"m what do you want me to bring? "Beer, we have the rest"
So I head over there, Im with 6 of my friends, having some burgers and beers, sitting around the table. Some of these guys I have known for 5 years, including one of the girls. Pretty much everyone is a PADI dive instructor and one of my buddies says he saw a show on the discovery channel re: the SEALs. He mentioned that he was mighty impressed with BUD/s, but found thier underwater skills to be lacking. (Having mask removed by instructor, simulated equipment failure etc.) He said he figured they hadn't had much experience up to this point, but would be damn good at it by the time they were finished with the training. And this girl, who I have known for 5 years or so makes a comment about how the military is more about saving than it is killing, and I say "Yeah, but not the spec ops guys, they're not building schools and passing out grain, I think with them, Its more to do with killing" and She looks around the table and says "He's talking to ME about spec ops guys????" and everyone sort of chuckles....
Now I'm thinking, so she dated a Ranger, who in this town hasn't. Hell, I've got friends who are active duty Rangers at Hunter, ex Rangers who now work civvy jobs, One of my best friends is an ex nightstalker who was a crew chief on a chinook and seved in Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia etc.... I've got a Buddy in Jordan and one in Baghdad right now. I mean down here where I live, its pretty common place.
So Im sitting there looking around at everyone who is chuckling at me, with a shrug and a "can I get a little help" look on my face. And my friend says "Dude, her dad was one of the guys who started Delta Force.. Bucky Burruss"
I was like "WTF?" Most of them have met her parents, I haven't...but next they come to visit, Im gonna meet this Man.
What astounds me is that I've known everyone for 5 years, and this has never been brought to my attention. Then again Ive never had a military based conversation with this group of friends. I ran a google search, Turns out Pops was a founding member and deputy commander of Delta Force......There's family photos on the fridge...............Unbelieveable.... I gotta get a photo with Him.
Im still completely astounded.
