Gaming addict dies in front of his computer

March 09 2004 at 02:05PM

Hong Kong - A computer-game addict in western China collapsed and died at his screen after playing the popular online game, Saga, non-stop for 20 hours.

The 31-year-old began playing the game regularly at an Internet cafe in Chengdu, Sichuan province, three months before his death, according to the South China Morning Post.

An employee at the cafe said he would play for more than 10 hours a day and was found dead at the weekend after a marathon 20-hour session. - Sapa-DPA

this guy obviously didnt know the joys of coffee.

QUESTIONS:

What has been your longest game session?
What game console do you have?

For me, it was 4 hours straight when BF:1942 first came out. I really don't play games a whole lot right now. In fact, I only spend less than an hour per week for online games.

I have PS2, XBOX, PC. All of them hook up through the internet for online gaming.

10 hours shouldnt do **** to you. when i was a kid i would go all day into night snacking on **** while playing from wake to sleep. id say gaming straight without taking any serious meal breaks has been over 24 hours where me and my friend played non stop into the night on mountain dew, chips, jerky (no, not that) and dip. i felt semi sick at night because i didnt have anything solid in my stomach and i crashed to sleep like a rock but i was fine the next morning. we used to game non stop through grade school-high school.

i think the guy in the article had some sort of health problem on top of stretching himself to thin.

We played Gran Turismo 2 and a few other games for 18+ hours one weekend during the early part of my post secondary schooling...

More recent record would be just six or so hours on SOCOM and Ace Combat 4

Even young and healthy can die when playing long.. this is called economy clas syndrome...It is a killer of fat programists and other siting job guys and girls...

Economy-Class Syndrome and Deep Vein Thrombosis

What is deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?

People who have a history of cardiovascular disease, stroke or thrombotic episodes (blood clots) are at risk of getting blood clots in their legs during airplane flights of 10 hours or more. But these aren’t the only people who can have this problem. This condition, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also can affect healthy people, even athletes.

What is economy-class syndrome?

Developing DVT after long plane rides is often called “economy-class syndrome” or “coach-class syndrome,” because seating and leg room are particularly cramped for passengers in economy class. However, first-class and business-class passengers also get DVT, so this problem isn’t solely due to sitting still in tight quarters for many hours. Other factors -- such as low cabin pressure, low humidity and dehydration -- all may contribute. These factors are constant throughout the plane.

Why is deep vein thrombosis dangerous?

DVT is potentially life-threatening. In it, blood clots form in the body’s deep veins, particularly veins in the legs. Sometimes the clot breaks off, travels through the bloodstream, and obstructs a vessel in the lungs, restricting blood flow. This condition is called pulmonary embolism. This damages tissues and causes poor lung function, which can be fatal.

People who survive their first episode of DVT may have chronic swelling in their leg and pain from the blockage of blood flow through the vein. This can reduce their ability to live a full, active life. People who’ve had one DVT episode are also ****e to have more.

How is DVT treated?

Studies in healthy people have shown that wearing “compression stockings” minimizes the risk of developing DVT after long flights. These stockings put pressure on leg muscles and help return blood flow from the legs to the heart.

People with cardiovascular disease and those at risk for clots in their legs may benefit from a single dose of heparin. This drug prevents clots from forming and is effective in reducing the risk of DVT in high-risk patients.

Doing repeated leg exercises, drinking more water and reducing alcohol intake during long flights is probably good advice. These steps aren’t scientifically proven to prevent traveler’s thrombosis, but they’re common sense.

Funny how the story neglects to mention his cause of death.....

.....maybe it was eye strain

Or could it possibly have been the complete lack of exercise combined with a diet of Fun Dip and Jolt Cola?

One thing's for sure, that PC Bang's business just got cut in half....time for management to go out and hook some more Evercrack addicts.

For 9 months i used to play a minimum of 5 hours a night, 5 days a week on all the major consoles, but then it was my job as i was a games tester! That's not including my own private gaming.

This guy must have had some heart defect that was not mentioned in the report!

I've had my fair share of gamefests with friends. Longest amount of time I ever went without sleep during one was probably about 15 hours, though I wasn't constantly playing during that time.

The first day I got my Xbox, I played Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, from about 11 hours straight. From 3pm until about 2 am. I then got five hours sleep and played until 10pm. After that my brain started to hurt. :D

I also check this site constantly. I could be on the computer for an hour and I'll check it five times.

Don't have the stamina to play games all by myself for an extended period of time. I usually get stuck somewhere and let the keyboard take the brunt of my anger and then I turn my comp off. But me and a good friend usually have an all-nighter when we get together (we live about 500km away from each other). We get a couple of beers, some pizza and other not-so-healthy stuff and play the latest games for 10-20 hrs straight...
