Have you ever had a bad dream that was so frightening that it just kind of haunted you all day the next day? Well last night I had a dream that was so God damned scary if I was an 8 year old boy I would have crapped the bed and stayed home from school today. I mean I'm a grown man and I'm feeling a little traumatized by the stuff that was going on in my dream last night.
It took place in a spooky ass abandoned city and it was about zombies. And I'm not talking about your lumbering around George A. Romero blood-thirsty zombie. The zombies in my dream were of the 28 Days Later variety. They hauled ass and a couple of them were on fire too. Every time I tried to hide in a house from these guys the flaming zombies would just burn a hole through the wall and the rest would just come pouring in and I'd have to bail out a window. This happened like 20 or 30 times, each escape more harrowing than the last, until finally they got caught up to me where I was hiding in some attic like Anne Franke. I woke up just as they were tearing me to pieces and I aint been quite the same since.
Bad dreams will do that to you which is why I think it's kind of an interesting topic and I'd like to do a little survey here. How often do you have nightmares and when you do have them what are they usually about? I'm good for a really bad nightmare about once every 2 years or so and when I have them they are almost exclusively about blood-thirsty zombies.

I haven't had a real intense nightmare for a long time now. Well, at least, I haven't remembered any recent ones.
I get sleep paralysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis) on a fairly regular basis. At first it was terrifying, now it just bores the crap out of me.

I just love intense nightmares. They are so much more realistic, intriguing, and probably revealing that other dreams.

When I have nightmares... they usually involve something happening to my children. I had a recurring one where my children were upstairs, and the house was on fire, but I couldn't get them out, because I was downstairs.

I can't remember what I dream...
If I ever have nightmares, they are small and too insignificant to remember proparly or have any real effect.+
Oh I also have more dreams of banging chicks which are good fun.

Strangely enough, I never have nightmares about something happening to people I care for. It's always about me, although there are usually a group of unidentified characters helping me or at least going through the same critical situations.
The plots vary, but are usually very realistic and dynamic, as my actions in the nightmare make the plot unfold to some dreadful realization, and then to either some horrible end (the end of the world is a pretty common one) or some succesful struggle to save whatever can be saved.

Last one I can remember was when I was about 10. Basically my entire family had been replaced by aliens, and when you tried to kill them their heads would fall off and start laughing manically. For about a week afterwards I was seriously questioning whether my family had ineed been replaced by aliens.

Nice nightmare Clete, my hat is off to you. I'm a firm believer that it takes a really good imagination to form a good nightmare - and the more creative you are, the worse they can be.
I get lots of nightmares involving knives, and fighting hand to hand. Usually my hands get cut up or severed with a Rambo-type knife - normally the sound of the blade scraping my finger bones wakes me up. Lots of stabbing zombies / enemy Army guys / demons in the head. I once woke up when I stabbed a witch through the eye - and she screamed "I burn!" and burst it green fire - and I woke up with a "Jeezus H Christ what was that!!"
Oh yeah - I get night terrors too, just when I'm gonna fall asleep I swear to God that I see huge spiders on my pillow or bed sheets - and I sit bolt upright and freak out. Not cute spiders like tarantulas, but nasty ones with shiny spindly legs, and huge pudding-filled abdomens. They want to lay eggs in my head.
But other than all that, I'm perfectly fine. Not stressed out or anything.
The upside to all this is that I also get many "*** with celebrity" dreams, where I've boned the likes of Jenny McCarthy, Jennifer Connely, Elizabeth Hurley etc. - so I'm perfectly OK with the trade-off.

I have never that many nightmares as an adult except after I read "The Rape of Nanking" , almost everynight I had dreams of people cutting peoples heads off, horrible things happening to children, horrific rapes, absolutely horrible disturbing dreams that would make me wake up in a sweat, traumatized for the rest of the night....So a warning if you ever want to read that book, it is very disturbing.

I can relate to this part about knives. Ive had some real nasty dreams about close combat with carpet knives and similar sharp things and the flesh/muscle cutting horror that follows.
And wakeing up like: "What the !!fU CK!! was that all about"
And feeling quite quisy the rest of the day, with nasty flashbacks about blood and guts throughout the day.
Erk..

Here's a question I've always wanted to ask...
When I have a nitemare and I'm trying to run, I can barely run. It's like I'm drunk and my legs are like spaghetti! The dream me is so friggin uncoordinated it pi$$es me off! It really screws up a good nitmare when I keep falling when trying to save my arse!

If you want to give a man nightmares, repeatedly whisper "Your ***** is falling off" while he's asleep.
It works, I have been a victim. An ex got the idea from the sitcom 'Men behaving badly'.

lately my nightmares have been about two different people. never both at the same time, though. they are the only two people i love.
i always end up killing them in the end, by accident. except for the first of these nightmares where i was tied up and forced to watch a man slaughter the entire family of this one person i love. and then he dismembered the bodies. and then he slowly did the same to me. i won't go into detail about it because it's long, and i don't want to think about it anymore. but it was horrible, and all so vivid.

nother one of my dreams.
back as a freshman in high school, getting books to put in my bookbag & everyone was telling me how good i was doing this year in school. after class was over we were walking down to the parking lot and i could barely walk my bookbag was so heavy. so down in the parking lot we went in this building on the 2nd floor, and there was a large hole in the floor and i guess everyone started hating me so they pushed me into the hole.

I havent had a nightmare in a couple of months. Ive been to dead beat tired to dream or remember my dreams lately. But when I do have a dream they are really livid and very detailed. Often have dreams of me running but for some reason I cant run fast...kind of like a very strong wind pushing you. I would then be using my hands to claw forward with no avail.

I dreamt I was being chased by cartoon for Disney. With guns. I'm totally damn serious.
Otherwise, I had a dream I in class, taking a nap, when I felt something cold on my shoulder, I looked up and the classroom was pitchblack. Then I heard a sound not unlike the sound from the kid in The Grudge, then I screamed and woke up. Screaming. Like a little girl.

A few weeks ago i dreamed i was pushed onto a guillotine. I don't know how it came into my mind/dream. Maybe a year ago i saw that pic of a guillotine execution and read about the last execution in france in the seventies. It was interesting, but dreaming of it almost year later is weird.
Then the blade fell through my neck, but it didn't hurt and i was surprised. Then in the typical dream "logic" i stepped off and was in front of my house.
edit: Now i know, i saw "Sophie Scholl - die letzten Tage". There's the detailed execution scene of Sophie Scholl.

ive had some pretty f*cked up dreams, This sorta counts as a nightmare to me, even though it wasnt scarey just upsetting. I had a dream that i was at a party and I went downstairs to get beer and my buddy who died in a car accident was there, and i am like "holey sh*t dude your ok? wtf ? man everyone thought u were dead? you gota let everyone know? you gota tell your mom dude " and he just kept lookin at me? and then i started gettin mad cursin at him tellin him he'd better F8ckin tell everyone hes alright, and the more he just stared at me and said nothin the angrier i got till i tore everything up and smashed a buncha stuff.
Its not a night mare but its not pleasant .. nightmares dont trip me out after the fact cause i know they are BS, but stuff like that really trips me out.

Well, a nightmare that haunted me all the time is that I am in some raid with the other soldiers and everything looks so real. I feel the sweat in my palms, I double check the G3A3 mag and pray to God that I survive this.
Then after some firefight (I swear that it sounds f***ing real!) my mate near me gets shot on his neck and blood spreads in my face. I hurry to assist him and get shot in my stomach.
So I fall down yelling in pain and calling for a medic...
I almost can swear the pain looks real... :-(
I wake up always checking my stomach, all sweating and my heart beating like a maniac...
Now thank God I haven't them anymore :-|

I get a dream every once in a while where I'm trying to shoot someone with my pistol, for whatever reason, and I can't squeeze the trigger hard enough. That one really sucks.
Also I'll have dreams where I end up killing somebody that kinda deserved it or pissed me off, and then "reality" crashes in and I realize I'm probably gonna go to jail, and my career is over and I frantically start trying to figure out how to get away with it. I usually wake up in a panic, and then feel really relieved that it was just a dream....probbaly from watching too much CSI and Law and Order.
I had some really graphic mefloquine dreams..but I take my pill in the morning now, so that's not a problem.

I can relate.......
I've had a recurring nightmare(roughly 5-6 times) over the last 30 years.
I'm lying in the bedroom of my childhood home at night.......so quiet I can hear my heartbeat.
I slowly begin to hear a MASSIVE(like tens of thousands) crowd screaming from a long distance.
I'm stuck in bed unable to move as the screaming crowd gets closer and closer.
They storm the house and climb the stairs, I wake up just as the door gets busted down.
First had the dream when I was about 6-8, last had the dream about a year or two ago and about 10 years since the time before that.
It used to freak me out, but now it's just strangely interesting.

God yes, they are the worse too because I've had my two front teeth knocked out before. So the dream sucks mucho ass because I know of all the pain/cost I have to go through to fix the damn things.
That episode was sweet, thats pretty much how most of my dreams turn out. Scenes melt into different scenes. Even the whole thing with the pistol...try to load it and the ammo turns to nothing or wont fit.
I often have dreams of trying to dial 911 for an emergency but I can never get through.
I read somewhere that dreams of teeth falling out means feeling a sense of loss of control.

Mostly just the usual "falling to death"-thing.
I am like cleaning the windows of a skyscrapper and suddenly I fall over and fall to death.
I also have "nightmares" in which I get executed for a stupid crime I didn't want to do.
My most recent dream was this:
I am on a rooftop in a sunny city, with my whole familiy. We are eating launch in the sun.
Suddenly there comes a Plane which flies all wacky and suddenly it crashes in the city. I am totally shocked and I say "we have to call 911" but my brother just says "Its OK, we eat first.".
Then a Indian guy (A guy I know from buisness.) comes upstairs with a gigantic Rat on his arms.
End.
I also have good dreams, in which I dream hat I got like 200 Millions on my bank account and a private Island, and I am really happy.
Then I wake up, and it sucks.

One of my more normal nightmares was one of me fighting for some reason or other in a city warzone, for some reason I think it was WWII and also that I belong there and am familiar with the setting. I am by myself and get pinned down and stunned by a large shell hitting a wall behind me. Then I get overrun while I am still too dizzy react and get captured. At this point I am pretty much useless and cant resist. I get propped on my knees before an officer which I can see talking(my ears are still ringing), he pulls out a pistol rests the muzzle at the side of my head, pulls the trigger. I feel the shockwave from the bullet push my head to the left while the bullet passes threw my skull and my ears pop the ringing stops. I fall to the ground with my eyes still open seeing the boots shuffle while I fade to black thinking, "well I guess this is it". Then nothing... a while later I wake up, not scared just thinking that it was quite interesting... funny stuff...

I used to get that quite alot, couldn't squeeze the trigger, or the gun turned out to be some sort of toy, or it was firing blanks. Was a bit scary but was more frustrating. Anyways had one dream when the gun fully worked... was such a relief!
Also had a nightmare yesterday, where I died and had to live in this village with all these other dead people. A dog bit my arm off which scared me ****less, but then it descended into almost Benny Hill farce with me chasing after scantily clad women.

I often get zombies/monsters related nightmares too. I'm always trapped into a building or even on a roof alone and i can't leave the place or i'm dead. More or less the same situation than in this Stephen King novel where a bunch of people are trapped into a supermarket with creatures lurking in the fog outside, it must have traumatized me when i read it. Most of the time i'm looking for a sign that there are others survivors (in vain) and i wake up during an escape attempt but i never see the outcome.
Oddly enough most of my nightmares involve a supermarket or a big shop where i have to hide endlessly. I once had one where two enormous T-Rex were exposed in a giant supermarket with only a thin wire to prevent them from escaping, and obviously they did escape and me and hundreds of people had to hide and run for hours until i finally reached an exit.
Remembering everything you dream is not that great sometimes.
