I'm just wondering about the different possibilities that the Canadians might have when it comes to replacing the Leopard 1's (besides the Strykers, was it?) .
Should they buy an already existing design, or go with something fully Canadian designed. However it might be, the Australians in turn are buying M1A? Abrams-tanks to replace their Leopard 1's, right?

I heard Australia either will choose Leopard 2 or M1A, but no decision until now.

I suppose you have read this article already?
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/03/09/australia.tanks/index.html
Hill said one of the advantages in choosing the Abrams over other tanks was the package included training systems and the opportunity to use state-of-the-art U.S. simulators.
At least some of the people are talking pretty much to the favor of the M1A?'s
EDIT: link actually works

I would like to see Canada purchase M1A1 Abrams like the OZ, but that chance is slim since Canadian Military is still underbudget. Canada Department of Defense ruled out that Leopard tanks will be in service up to 2010. Then after that... who knows.... Stryker? :(
i would love Canada make their own version of the M1A1 abrams

The costs of developing the tank are more expensive than buying the existing tank that available in the market.

The Canadian tanks are as ****ty as you might think...
they are heavily upgraded and quite a few parts on it are even better than those of on the Abrams.
Still they will need to be replaced soon.

by building our own tank we would need to spend billions in development and then produciton money that we dont have. Nor do we really need to build our own heavy tank due to the fact that we don't go into combat where we really need them, we cant affrod to go on missions any more nad getting a tank would render our military even more incapable. Lets just go with what has been proven and what works
Id be happy with a Leo2a5 or 2a6 but Im be just as happy getting a A1 with DESIL only. then we'd need to alter it to meet our requirements for fighting in the cold.
well just take the abrams than get some Canadian smarts and add some Beer fridges inside!

would anyone mind calling up the last time Canada sent Tanks anywhere, or had the opportunity to use them but if we had to move em by ship the fun would be over by the time we got there?
I hate seeing Tanks go in the CF... but asside from playing war games with the Americans, tankers I don't think get a lot of work outside the continent...
If we got new tanks, we'd need either new ships or new planes to transport em, and I very much doubt anyone is in any rush to replace the Herc fleet.
Australia is going through huge military expansions and could actually have the chance to USE those tanks in the middle east or some time in the future for home defense.

That is one of the issues on the board. Change the tanks for something else or update our transpo aircraft fleet with some tank-capable lifters. I personally would prefer the aircraft option as we have a variety of wheeled armored vehicles, recon and whatnot, so by keeping tanks in our armory we would remain more versatile. Who knows where we will next be needed and where tanks would prove invaluable. I think the army needs a little TLC from the government. Listen to what the lads and lasses in uniform have to say, not what some desk pushing individual thinks they want.
Personally I like the Leos, but updates are always good. And I think the Abrams or Merkava would look pretty sweet with the maple leaf on the side ;)
You should at least give credit to the site.

Isn't the Merk designed specifically for Israeli conditions in the heat and the dessert - if true then its useless to us.
Leo and Arbrams operate in simular conditions as here in Canada. Important to note also that that Sweden and im not sure aobut Norway but they bought Leo2a5s or (2a6) and they are Nordic countries with simular conditions as we experience here in Canada.

And don't forget Finland.
As it turns out, all of the Scandinavian countries are packing Leopard 2's in their stocks right now, and as Canada does have similar weather conditions the Leopard 2's would surely be a sizable option.
Btw, the Swedes have Leopard 2A5's with their own modifications attached and all, and the Norwegians have Leopard 2A4's (Leopard 2A4NO).

@ Daller
Yeah sorry knew that Sweden for sure had 2a5s but I wasn't too sure about Finland, I was 50/50 on that one, thanks for the correction.

I thought i said that one more then one time . Merk was designed to work at OPTIMAL in condition of Golan hights .
It doesn't mean that in the minute i put it in the Canadian soil , the tank will explode inside out , the chains will fall on the ground , and he will refuse to drive , you know . ;)
And heat and desert aren't exactly Merkava optimal use ;) . Pretty far from it

Now very sorry for off topic . Canada is welcome to buy Merkava , if it's on sale (According to israeli-weapons it is ;) ) .

Yup it can get to be -60 degrees celcious here sometimes, not all the time but you need equipment that can take that kind of punishment.
