Tactical Assault Groups (TAG)

The TAG provide a world class counter terrorist capability to react to State or Territory requests for support made to the Commonwealth Government.

They are elite Special Forces units able to deploy at short notice.

The Australian Government has committed considerable resources to the TAG, allocating $219.4 million over four years in the 2002-03 Budget to double the capability and strengthen domestic security as a response to the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

The TAG conduct offensive and recovery operations beyond the range and scope of other Australian Defence Force units, including recapturing structures, freeing hostages and supporting high risk search teams.
Australian Defence Force Capabilities

The ADF has a significant range of capabilities with which it can respond to such requests. These include land forces, air and sea lift, medical support and a designated counter terrorist capability.

The ADF's specific counter terrorist capabilities include the:

Tactical Assault Group (West) - comprising members from the Special Air Service Regiment based in Perth.
Tactical Assault Group (East) - comprising members from 4th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (Commando) based at Holsworthy Barracks, Sydney with additional personnel support from the Royal Australian Navy.
Incident Response Regiment - comprising soldiers and scientists with headquarters at Holsworthy Barracks, Sydney.
The ADF also maintains excellent cooperation with Australia's allies - Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom - that have considerable experience in this field to ensure its terrorism response personnel have access to the most up-to-date techniques and training.

I reckon that flash on the old photos with the austeyrs says police. I reckon it is one of the sert/trg/star ect groups.

Those Aus Steyr toting guys TAG? :D haha I think not champ......

Look at the rocker arch patches on the shoulder.........they are 1980's issue tactical Police overalls that all states used. Look closely and you can read the word police.....
Only Victoria SOG and the Nothern Territory TRG use the Steyr AUG for their Police Tactical teams, so take your pic as to which it was during the late 80's early 90's posing for those shots. No team uses the S8 masks anymore either... or that style of armour....very old school.

The guy ****e in the full cam looks like Infantry to me and certainly not TAG or a Police unit.

Re: Tankies helmets, they are a very similar style but certainly not the same material or coms set up. Many helmets types have been trialled over the years and the current one is the one that Troopers have choosen again and again. Having said that though......new styles are always trialled and tested...and a new helmet was in the works last time I heard.

TAG is made up of men of both the SASR & 4th RAR Commando. I suppose BiZ can give you more details on that.

The bottom photo is an older shot of Irish Garda armed police, Special Branch if my memory serves me correctly. That is an offical picture in an official Garda information publication that I have at work. Not special forces, just police.

It would be new to me that the Irish Police use Steyr AUG. But I know that Australien Pollice use the AUG. (Ithoght the Irish Police use Uzi's and MP5's)
And the Revolver in the Holster of one Police man looks like one of the Australian Police.

Australien Pollice use the AUG

As I said before, only two States actually use the Steyr AUG.
Every other State/Territory uses eithr Colt CAR-15/M-16 or M4 varients for their assault rifle role.
The Nothern Territory Police Territory Response Group uses the F88-A1 and the F88C (Steyr AUG Carbine) while the other State to use them, Victoria, uses the same versions, but also now issues M-4's as well.

TAG is made up of men of both the SASR & 4th RAR Commando

There are two TAGs.
TAG-West, which is the SASR, who are based in Perth on (suprise suprise) the west coast of Australia.
TAG-East is the TAG run by 4RAR (cdo) who are on the East Coast (Liverpool).
Both TAGs are also supplemented with divers from the Navy CDTs who are TAG qualified.
