If they didn't decide to do international service that is. Anyway, here are some pics from the ceremonies that took place this week. Not much military but good photos nonetheless.
Most of them are self-explanatory so no captions this time.

Under the new system from 2005 it's 11 months on two semesters of basic training and 3 to 5 months additional, depending on selection.

Good looking bunch of young soldiers(or are they recruits?)
Interesting to see no fat kids in the bunch.....I would have thought Sweden suffered from "excessive Big Mac syndrome" just like the rest of the west. ;)
Are the uniforms the EOD folks wearing standard issue or is that EOD related kit?

Hahaha we have some of that Big Mac syndrome but those recruits come to their assigned regiments after the selection/screening/conscription process.. which happened to them earlier that year. (When they test for heart failures, check BMI, muscular strenght, hearing, overall mental and physical fitness etc...)
Yea EOD related kit not standard (although partly shared)

No, but all males have to go through a series of physical, medical and mental tests in their 18th year of life, unless you have a very good reason not to. You are summoned to these tests according to law. When the tests are done, you´re called to a "recruiter" who will offer you different "MOS´s" based on your test results. The tests measure your muscular strenght, physical fitness, intelligence, and to see if you have the potential to be a leader. Some services require you to volunteer, such as parachute ranger, coastal ranger, navy EOD diver, and for these you have to go through an additional selection phase. They also require very good results from the first two days of mandatory tests described above.
Back in the dark midieval days, all men had to go through military training, but this is not the case today. Most men won´t have to, or have the ability to do it. Up until now, conscripts served for 7,5, 10 or 15 months, depending on their "MOS", in the three service-branches. Army, Navy and Airforce. Today, starting this year I think, all those who serve, serve a minimum of 11 months and have the option to serve for an additional "semester". This period is there to prepare you for international service.
