Home invasion stuns residents
Police seek suspects in armed attack
By CHAD KLIMACK
Four armed men forced their way into a Pataskala home Monday night and pistol-whipped a teenager in an incident police are calling a classic home invasion.
The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. Monday at 410 Doris Ave., which is located in Summit Ridge Estates, a community on Cleveland Road, just east of Mink Street.
Summit Ridge Estates resident Shellie Priest found out about the incident from a reporter.
"I never heard anything about it," said Priest, who, after being told about the incident, said it sounded "scary."
Summit Ridge Estates resident Thelma Kipe lives on the same block as the home at 410 Doris Avenue, and Kipe also did not know about the incident until a reporter knocked on her door.
"Things like that scare everyone," said Kipe, immediately after being told of the incident.
Despite the home invasion, residents who live in the community said Tuesday Summit Ridge Estates is quiet and safe.
"This is a pretty nice area, really," Kipe said.
Said Priest, "I've never ever had a problem. I've felt safe, and I've lived here six years."
The incident happened when four armed men knocked on the door of the single-story home and then forced their way inside after a 17-year-old resident answered it.
"There was a knock at the door, and the victim answered it and observed four black males outside," Pataskala police officer Kevin Beesley said. "They pushed him into the house and hit him (in the head)."
Once inside the home, the four men pointed semi-automatic handguns at the teenager and three other residents and then stole electronics and other miscellaneous items, according to police reports.
Before leaving, the thieves threatened the residents.
"They said there were people waiting outside and if the cops showed up or they called the police, they would kill them," Beesley said.
Despite the threats, the residents called police. Medics from West Licking Joint Fire District treated the teenager at the scene for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported, but the four victims were shaken up after having guns pointed at them.
