A great video...
I also agree though with the member who is bitching about tax dollars.
Maybe its an age thing. If they rolled and damaged the Stryker, then I WOULD be paying for it and that is just plain stupid.
I think the best comparison is the 2nd video above. Its funny too and doesn't involve risking expensive hardware...same with that BMX video a year or too back...
A little common sense guys...

Hell what if they had been driving through there to get to a critical position or area and where going full speed and hit the jump. Thanks for the video it was cool.

and they all smashed there heads of the interrior, they all had concutions. never had helmets on because it was suppose to be just an "introduce" to the tank

Yeah, lets say they slightly damaged the vehicle. Nothing noticeable, like hairline cracks in three or four of the struts...then when they had to do it for real they die.
Yeah, its a cool video. The kid in me LOVES to watch it, but the adult tax payer who has had family and friends die in wars thinks its completely irresponsible.

Many tax payers would love to sponsor what they did in that video I am sure.
Just hearing a few soldiers having a laugh is worth it. They did this a few minutes of a day, then back to cr4p day-2-day business.

In 91 some paratrooper killed a camel with an AT4...
It's not much different then when Sept of each year comes around, and you have to go and blow off any extran munitiond left in Bn so you don't loose any the next fisical year... Although I used to volinteer for that duty and get my guys into some extra special training...

What lives are you talking about... I'm talking about waisting money...
The war in Iraq is a waist of lives, money, and time...
But this thread is about a Stryker jumping, and some of you crying about how this jump is a waist of your tax dollars...

That I absolutely agree with. Troops should always be shooting ammo, every morning is fine with me. It just makes them better shots and therefore more likely to win and survive.
Playing rough in that Stryker like they were I don't like because they are wearing out the vehicle. I live not far from Ft Lewis and I read how much those things cost to repair and maintain, what a ripoff.

I would never compaire the two... damit D. what you smoken bro...
Your starten to sound like my wife... did we ever talk about soldiers in the past year that you feel you need to bring up in this argument now..p-) I will have to agree with your argument about them chancing breaking a military vehicle while horse playing around... But like i said... sadely waist is the norm in the military... not usually with the soldiers, but with the system... An di like said before, the Army Chain of Cmd tells you to waist the government's money buy using it, and not saving it for another day...
As for waisting the lives of our soldiers, by no way am I compairing them to ammo.. and you should be ashamed of yourself by suggesting so.. remember I used to be a soldier..and I take that statement serious...
Now back to the video.. where was the NCO of that vehicle??? because if it got broke doing something like that, then he would have had his ass in a sling..

I think they were pretty sure that the Stryker can handle this little jump. These vehicles are built for rough territory and for war.
If you can jump with 60ton tanks, you can jump with a wheeled Stryker 10 times...
GrimReaper
04-15-2006, 11:36 AM
You can jump a 60 tons tank, buy you cause cumalitve stress damage (or worse) to idlers, rollers, torsion bars/spring suspension etc'. The same is true for every vehicle, even suspension systems on wheeled vehicles.
If there's an oprative reason to do these jumps, so be it. But playing around for the sake of the camera is a bad soldiering and negligance of duty.
I'm sure none of the "holy****!! thats cool" comments, came from people who ever did some hard mechanical work due to idiocy and infantile behavior of grunts in the field.
I know what I used to do when seeing soldiers f**k around with equipment, I hope they do the same in the US armed forces.

can and should are two different things
"It's government property, you're not married to it!
the second you marry it you can jump up and down on it all you want but untill that time you treat it the same way you'd treat your boss's wife ... carefully, because you don't want him to find out you've been using it in a way he doesn't want you to."
that's what I was told during basic training ... well in Dutch so I don't know how well that translates
MARINO
04-15-2006, 04:47 PM
they do this even during exercices.
they shoot guided rockets during excercises as well, doesn't mean you can just fire of a couple of them when you are bored

Uncle Sam - I think some of us know what we are talking about.
Marino - if this was just a normal drill - fine, but I have the sinking feeling this was just for the photo op.
you don't need to travel to Iraq to know what jumping does to an armoured vehicle

Stress relief. I'm sure they "jumped" a Stryker when they tested the damn thing, and more than once. So, one jump a few inches off the ground for ****s and giggles won't kill the thing, or it wouldn't be in service.
That's my point that you obviously missed.
I'm sorry you guys had a hard time being mechanics.
GrimReaper
04-15-2006, 07:34 PM
That's the exact kind of infantile mindset I except of grunts who only have eyes for the small picture.

as said, I don't know how often they do this ... if it's just this once then I'm sure it'll be fine but seeing as how they got their camera set up ready for it I'd be willing to bet good money that they did it before.
do it enough and the vehicle will break down, if that happens in combat all those giggling troopers will die

I'm not a grunt, but played one on T.V.
I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you.
If you didn't want to fix the ****, you shouldn't have been a mechanic. Why didn't you try for something where when it broke, you didn't have to cry about fixing it.
Good night
GrimReaper
04-15-2006, 07:48 PM
I use the term grunt just because it's the closest word I know to describe a simple soldier trying to minimize his duties and any over-thinking.
I'm not a mechanic, but I do have to play one when immature soldiers get stuck in the field, due to their own incompetence and negligance.
And no, I havn't been to Iraq. So I guess I don't know what I'm talking about. I'll shut up now, g'night.
hey if the mechs know the apc's are being used for extreme sports I'm sure they'll gladly fix it ... but do you think they know about this?
I doubt it

actually when we were clearing the trees out from behind our reserve center we had a lot of humvees and other vehicles pulling the downed trees out from the area and a few people had the bright idea to do some extra curricular off roading, it was funny as hell to watch and i think i actually have a video of it still somewhere ill try to post it if i find it... but anyway even the BC was having a good time watching their stunts and not one of us 63Bs complained when we had to spend the next 3 drills replacing the suspension on 5 or 6 humvees, removing some rather large chunks of wood from various engine parts (still not exactly sure how that happened) and the cleaning the blood from the drivers side of one after a rather hard landing caused one of our soldiers to smash his nose off the steering wheel. its good to cut loose every once in a while
yes but you guys actually had the luxury of taking these vehicles off the line for three days because you were not in a warzone am I right?
I think it's unwise

I just heard from a close friend of mine who is currently in Mosul with the 101st and I guess its pretty bad over there, just the stress of it and all. I have no problem with my tax dollars going to this kind of stuff if it gets our soldiers a little down time so they can fight better. Plus I think the fact of that they were able to stop and do that with out getting killed is a testiment to they're work as soldiers.

We lost a soldier in Kosovo in 2001 due to similar driving... A SISU drove along a very bumpy road at excessive speed, resulting that the SISU jumped and landed in bad way. It toppled over, crushing the soldier in the VC-hatch.
