A pensioner who made repeated calls for tougher sentences for yobs was battered to death by a gang of teenagers, a court heard yesterday.
Raymond Gange, 69, was a regular contributor to his local paper, the Derby Evening Telegraph, where he used the letters page to comment on the lawlessness of youths.
Last August he was set upon by three teenagers and murdered in a random attack.
Yesterday Shaun Johns, 18, was convicted of his murder. His friend Calvin Grant, 17, was found guilty of manslaughter. The third attacker, Jak Jones, 18, admitted murder at an earlier hearing.
Nottingham Crown Court heard the three, from Derby, had spent the evening looking for someone to rob.
When they came across Mr Gange in the street they punched, kicked and stamped on him before throwing his lifeless body over a hedge.
The court heard that they were actually plotting to lure another unsuspecting householder on to the street to rob when they came across Mr Gange, who was returning to his sister's home in Chellaston after celebrating his son-in-law's birthday.
The three stole Mr Gange's car keys and planned to go joyriding but were unable to find his car.
Mr Gange's granddaughter, Tammy Thompson, 29, said: "Everyone will feel safer at night now that these criminals are off the streets. They are hooligans who need to be locked up. "
