Yadda, yadda, germans are all evil union members tieing up all the time, but what about truth?
I have a nice figure:
Days lost trough tie-ups per 1000 employees:
(yearly average 1993 - 2003)
Spain: 252
Kanada: 187
Danmark: 174
Italy: 130
Finland:115
France: 92
Ireland: 77
USA: 45
Sweden: 30
Great Britain: 25
Hungary: 23
Portugal: 23
Poland: 23
Netherlands: 18
Germany: 5
Switzerland: 3
Austria: 1
Japan: 1
source: Globus 9144
I took it out of a german class book.

I don't understand what you mean by "tie-ups"? Use the German word if you have to. I am American and personally love Germany, so I'm curious to what you are talking about.

State owned tank factories:
USA: 1 (Operated by General Dynamics, the facility is owned by the United States for national security reasons similar to the SANDIA Corp.)
Germany: 0
State Owned Railway companies:
USA: 1 (Highly subsidized indeed)
Germany: 0 (Deutsche Bahn DB, formerly DBB, only recently became Die Bahn DB)
State owned Post system:
USA: 1 (The most efficient in the world and also self-financing)
Germany: 0 (Until 1989 the largest employer in the Federal Republic. I won't go into the Bundesanstalt für Post und Telekommunikation, Deutsche Telecom, EADS or Airbus either)
... I can go on but never mind... :)
Is a Swede telling me the United States is socialist? That's a good one.

I'm not sure which German party you're talking about - we have a Social Democrat Party (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPD), SPD) and we used to have a Party of Democratic Socialism (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus, PDS) that is today known as the Left Party (Die Linkspartei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left_Party_%28Germany%29)).
Social Democracy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_democracy) != Socialism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism).

Am I to interpret the term Social Welfare as some form of entertainment?
p-)
Social Democracy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_democracy)
Nevermind the Marxist roots ...
lol
Besides, I lived in the German Social Democracy throughout the 70's and experienced the differences between here and there.

lol, Amtrak sucks.
Though I did ride it while going to school.
There definately needs to be better mass transit here, something that isn't in our culture here.
The fact is that the US is getting more and more socialized (ie socialist) while much of Europe is implementing needed changes taking away social welfare protections and reliquishing state ownership in a globally competitive market.
Ultimately we will end up as some Global Burgeoise run by the World Bank.

Germany learned little from the experience of WWII - tank production in privatized sector is just not what it's drummed up to be...
