What kind of machine gun or whatever it is, is that with the soldier kneeling down. I haven't seen a magazine coming from the side like that since the Sten?

He's got the one his magazines taped together but ones upside down. Why would he do that instead of the normal way with both ones up?

Possibly so water and sand drain out more easily.

Then again, looks like a good way to bend the lip of the magazine..

It's an old practice,especially when you only have 2 mags taped together,you would need a spacer to keep the mags apart if they were both to be facing upwards ;)
