Interesting reading.

A well thought out and well executed operation that there is no doubt.

However as is mentioned in this. Nukes had already been dropped. There was talk about surrender. And the Japanese had nothing to counter Russian tanks. And according to the numbers most Japanese units were quite undermanned. compared to their pre-war stength.

Basically the Japanese had been spent. And were up against the cream of the red army who had spent the last 4 years fighting the country that more or less invented modern mobility in warfare.

I have also read that article good stuff- the Japanese forces were rather large, but they were nothing compared to the forces opposing them. It was numerically the largest defeat for the Japanese army ever.

Isnt there a theory that Japan most likely surrendered because of USSR possibly occupying Japan before USA? I.E. Japan rather surrender to USA than USSR. Because I mean, the Japanese have lost a lot of casualties in firebombing etc. so to say that the dropping of the nukes is the cause can seem odd.

According to Imperial transcripts, Japan capitulated due to a combination of the Manchurian debacle and the use of atomic weapons by the US.
