HI All,

how many HInds were sent to Iraq? and why did they even bother to send the older Mi-24D, when they also have the V models with the much superior shturm?

Check out the eyes on the turbines. That's one mean looking chopper.

To prevent fires.

Mi24 can take off withot runway? Am I wrong?
So why the foam?

It could also help prevent dust build up that plagues aircraft in desert environments.

So why the foam?

Read my post again.

I thought of that too, that's the other explanation.

Hmmm... I don't remebmer(sorry) how many of our Hinds are in Iraq, but something around 4-6.
We send Mi-24D because they will be retired from Polish Army in next few years. Those Mi-24D from Iraq will stay in Iraq for ever(maybe iraqi army will receive them, but they will be in very poor condition). It is just not profitable to get them to Poland...
So in other words - we get rid of those old Hinds(Mi-24D - wersion V will stay in Polish Army longer) :)

Very sharp Tony 6, that's from a series of photos where Gen Abizaid visited the Polish base, think that's him in the pic getting out of the hind, that's what he came in.

As to the foam, I'm not sure, but think it was taken around christmas time and was done to simulate snow as a joke.

My question still stands. Why?

When you do a "hot" refuelling, that means the Engine is still hot, it is possible some of the fuel that drops to the ground will ignite. Or something goes wrong during refuelling and more than a few drops are on the ground...

When there is foam this cant happen, it wont ignite.

During my time at the german Airforce it was only allowed to refuel hot when a firefighting vehicle stands ready next to the Helicopter.

Perhaps this is the polish way to do it.
