Lynx is a very impressive Helo, had the privilige of being flown around Otterburn quite a few times and British Pilots are very good (army air corps and RAF).
Especially knowing that the guy at the controls was a corporal :). And looks can be deceiving cuz that thing can carry a lot of people, its fast, if ever you should see teh Royal Navy Demo team.

I think a modified lynx is the fastest.
Of all the helicopters in service around the world, which is the fastest(in normal service/not modified)?
Royal

A development model of the Lynx holds the world (rotary) airspeed record.

The Lnyx is also one of the few helos able to be looped and rolled owing to it's unique rotor system.
the point ofwhich keeps eluding me but that's a cool feature for sure :)

Semi rigid titanium rotor head. Costs a whack as well.

The changes weren't that major, BERP blades (which became standard), Tail section off of the civil Lynx (wg.34? (being included on the next generation Lynx)) and slightly modified engines (current export and all future versions have T800's with about 40% more power).
Saw a video, think it was on this site a couple of weeks ago, with it looping and rolling... Very nice!

think the airframe can only take so many of the loops before its shagged.

Incorrect! - Can you honestly see the MoD allowing manoeuvres in an airframe which would contribute to drastically shortening the airframe life. Loops/rolls are fully within the capability of this airframe. This is a multi-million £ airframe!
25 yrs. + in service - and what do you buy to replace a Lynx - A new Lynx, it's a damned good helo!

Fleet Air Arm. As the name says it's a long arm.:)
I've flown in a smaller helo, the gazelle. Pretty sweet. only for about 10 minutes or so.:-(

just had a look on this site:
http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/ka50/specs.html
and even its dive speed is short of the lynx, but that is for the standard version...
