"Peace" grannies on trial in NY for Iraq protest

NEW YORK (*******) - Some hobbled in on canes, others walked gingerly, but a group of grandmothers remained defiant as they faced trial on Thursday after being arrested while protesting against the Iraq war.

Joined by dozens of anti-war activists including Cindy Sheehan, 18 members of a group called the "Granny Peace Brigade" pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct for protesting outside a Times Square military recruitment center in October.

Sheehan, who has become a leading voice against the war since her son was killed in Iraq, said the grannies spoke "for the people in Iraq who don't have voices."

"When women like grannies are punished for trying to save lives, this country is in a terrible mess," she said.

The group of women aged 50 to 91 were supported by others such "Raging Grannies" from Canada, whose members wore badges, chanted and held banners that read "Arrest Bush, Free the Grannies" and "Can't whip the Insurgents? Whip Grannies."

Assistant District Attorney Amy Miller it was a simple case. "It's not about the war, it's about disorderly conduct," she said in an opening statement, adding the group blocked pedestrian traffic and did not obey police orders to disperse.

Attorney Norman Siegel told the court the group, which includes teachers and nurses, had been locked out of the recruitment center and staged a sit-in protest, although one elderly woman was unable to sit and two other women remained standing to support her.

The "grannies," as Siegel repeatedly called them, were eventually placed in a police van, fingerprinted and held for more than four hours after their arrest.

"We should be praising these grandmothers, not prosecuting them," he said outside the courtroom. "If the DA wants to put the grannies on trial, we will put the war on trial."

While the case will hinge on whether the Siegel can prove the women did not block traffic, many of the women said the trial was a second chance to voice their protest against the war and recruitment methods.

"There was no point arresting us, we were simply trying to make a statement," said former assemblywoman Marie Runyon, the oldest of the group at 91, who held herself steady using two walking sticks.

The trial is expected to last several days. If found guilty, the women could be fined $250 or sentenced to a maximum of 15 days in jail.

And 91-year old granny deserves jailtime for protest?

Yes. Why should they be allowed to commit crimes just because they're old? Pity and mercy is why theres no justice in the justice system.

It's a very simple concept - If you don't want to pay fines and rott in jail, then don't commit the crime.

So when I turn 75, I'll go on a killing spree and you can't punish me because that would be mean. F*cking fantastic!

Who did the 91-year old grannie murder then? Or why is she so dangerous to the society that she needs to be locked away?

They crossed the line of protest into misbehavior blocking traffic and failing to disperse. They’ll just get a slap on the wrist fine or more likely a light chastising from a judge for the disorderly conduct.

And 91-year old granny deserves jailtime for protest? They broke the law. Even senior citizens aren't above the law. As has been said, it's highly doubtful that anyone's going to get jailtime. A fine and a slap on the wrist is the most they'll get.

My real question is, what the hell do they think they'll accomplish. How can they possibly expect people to sympathize with them by blocking traffic and being a general nuisance?

Good job on failing to recognize the difference between, say, murder, and blocking traffic. We should throw speeding drivers and jay-walkers in with child rapists, right?

Apparently, they blocked pedestrian traffick. Any large assembly is going to block pedestrian traffick if it's held in a public place. In my mind, the right of peaceful assembly, being fundamental to a democracy, trumps you right to not have to take twenty precious extra steps to walk around the crowd. It's a BS charge, not a legitamte threat to security.

Just like f***ing old people to hold up traffic. I know, I live in Florida.

Only thing worse than a geriatric obstacle is a horde of them.

Oh wow. Thats two that missed my point. My point was WTF does age have to do with how you are judged for a crime?

Grandpa and Grandma are not above the law.

I agree, age has nothing to do with it. A 5, 20, 50 or 100 year old person should not be sent court for peacefully assembling and "blocking civilian traffic", a charge so dubious it can't even be properly ridiculed.

It sounds to me more like they were getting up in people's faces, trying to prevent them from passing, etc. Additionally, this would be fairly consistent with Sheehan and her crew of loonies.

God these war protestors are retarded...

With the amount of time and resources they spend on this stupid sh*t they could be actually doing something USEFUL! Like maybe make some care packages to send to the people in Iraq... Or raising money to send books to the children there.

But no, they'd rather build signs and be attention whores.
