Only when they pry the last keyboard from the cold dead hands of the last Dutchman will there be peace.

That'll teach you to launch a nuke at Seattle. :P

You can't have a little online forum without startiing flame wars...

On a more serious note, however, global peace won't happen in any of our lifetimes.

to many differences in opinion and people willing to do great violence on behalf of their opinions. A nice dream, perhaps, but just a dream in the end.

That, and what Mocking said.

I got a better chance of setting up an ice cream shop in alaska or setting up a sand factory in egypt and making profit off of it then world peace.

Yes, there will be. Sure, there will still be murders and such, even terrorism, but fewer and fewer country-country wars, as we've seen in the past few decades.

By the way, I don't know if humans are designed to kill one another, or if any animal is. Each animal lists priorities essentially like this: offspring survive; self-survives(the first two switch sometimes, as is the case with some sharks, for example); pack(or ethnic group or country) survives; species survives. No animal that I am aware of kills for sport. Even humans rarely do so.

Most wars are over resources, and humans will fight over resources. Animals do this too, one pack will fight another pack of the same species if the second pack drifts into the territory of the first pack. If the first pack didn't defend it's urine-marked borders, then that pack would starve. That intraspecies violence is merely a means of ensuring that the species survives.

There will almost certainly be ideological differences always, but something very close to world peace is accomplishable. Of course, it would require switching to clean, renewable energy sources, the development of the third-world, and the rehabilitation of the ozone layer and removal of enough greenhouse gases to stabilize the atmosphere. If not, heating oil and gasoline prices skyrocket before too long, and we all die. However, it is entirely possible that we will meet the challenge and survive.

I am not convinced that we are above evolutionary dictates, including those ingrained priorities. Indeed, did we not obey those priorities, we would not have made it this far. Of course, we need all ethnic groups and countries to survive in the end, in the long term. National security is a temporary thing, in scientific terms; we can be safe for ten thousand years or more here, perhaps, but in the end, a very long time from now, if we haven't gotten at least a very large number of humans living on other worlds, we, as a species, die.

We as individuals, as ethnic groups, and as nations can survive better if we all work together. There is simply too much that needs doing to be done by only one nation or group. Hopefully we can do it. Have a good one all, and as always, just some thoughts...

There better be James; if there isn't, what the heck have we been trying for for the past few decades.

I agree.

Five years ago I would've said, "Hell no, it's in our nature to destroy ourselves. Look at kids fighting over toys on the playground. It just is, and talking about it in any other way is a waste of time."

I don't feel that way now. If there wasn't hope, we might as well get it over with now and quit living a farce.

Just a thought.

Yeah, but if nobody is killing eachother, the world will be overpopulated and we'll eat up all our food and starve. Then, when we're significantly thinned out, the aliens will invade and wipe out the survivors of the great famine.

That is the gospel according to Innoxx.

Now, let's eat some stale Christ flesh and get pissed on his blood.

Actually that's basically what I think of it. I don't know if there are aliens or anything out there, or if we will ever find them, but IMO the only way we might possibly ever get total peace on earth is if there would be an alien enemy with intent to wipe us out.
That would basically force us to unite, but it would also create a new situation; it would give us as humans a feeling of 'us' against 'them'. Right now there is simply no 'us' feeling as there's no them. The 'us' right now is nations, or religions, or whatever, but hardly anyone thinks as 'us' as all humans. As soon as people would consider all humans as an 'us' wars between men would most likely be over.

If there ain't no alien enemy coming; I doubt we'd ever see peace. People will always find reason for war... whether for religion, recourses (maybe the kind of recourses will changes, but the recourse wars will propably remain to exist), national pride, simple greed for land by country leaders, ethnic differences, because of supported terrorism, or because some jackass from one country shot one of the leaders of another country.
The list of reasons for goes on an on, and the way it is now, there just seems no way mankind will ever wisen up. There's a small chance they might learn after WW3 (if there ever is one), when half the world is destroyed in the war, but even then it's doubtfull.

So to sum things up; mankind on it's own isn't capable of finding peace. Peace is IMO only possible by intervention of other species, by being our enemy and making/forcing us to unite, and making the good old 'us' and 'them' definitions.

Yes.

It only takes a change in attitudes.
International capitalism must go.

Oh, I forgot that we are greedy bastards.

The answer still is yes.

International capitalism will destroy this planet inhabitable for us. We shall find peace in non-existence.

I agree with some parts (yes we're greedy bastards, and yes it will lead to wars), but it's unfair to say that international capitalism is the only reason for wars. If this planet will be destroyed by wars, it will propably be by wars of various reasons. So even when you'd take out the wars for greed you'd still have plenty of wars left I'm afraid.

The only way I can see peace (as in no conflicts or wars) happening is if one power or race, or even religion decides to wipe out all other powers, races and/or religions. So in the end Earth would be one big nation with a single race and/or religion/belief. It would be very bloody, very destructive and I doubt us humans would even fight it, we'd send something else to do it all, machines more than likely. Also deep down I think all of us would support such action/s because it could truely work (well a few generations would have to pass after it all ended)... Or something like that.
