The US had had its troops and its SF searcging for Osama Bin Laden and othe rmembers of Al-Quaeda for a couple years now. After the recent bombings in Spain, Spain will probably send its military after Al-Quaeda and Im sure these are not the only 2 countries. Is the end of Al-Quaeda near?

I think we shouldnt look at it in those terms.

Is the end of Osama near? Yes. But as far as i am concerned, Al Queda as the organized and strong organization it was ended on October 7th of 2001. The war in Afghanistan destroyed 2/3 of AL Queda's personel, froze almost all their funds, netted 3/4 of the upper tier personel and destroyed their training camps and ammo caches. SInce then they are far less coordinated, not capable of complex attacks like 9-11 and they basically have few places to hide.

They thought 9-11 would cripple us. Instead it crippled them.

They have plenty places to hide, plenty of funds and plenty of help. Sure a few of the higher-up's have been caught/ gone into hiding. But they are still as dangerous as ever. Its the guy's you dont hear about that should worry you.

Is the end of Al-Quaeda near?

If you equate AQ as well trained, well motivated, well funded terrorism targeting the West and primarily the US....

No

I can see Al-Q rumbling on for a long time to come, they are far from a spent force and even if Osama is killed or captured I see no change until some Muslims lose interest in militant Islam.

This is a tricky question, actually. If Osama and ALL his top tier personnal were caught today, and 85% of the "ground troops" killed, would AQ come to an end? I doubt it... it might take them 3 or 4 years to regroup/retrain, but they WILL be back. AQ is not in some ways more a "concept" than an organization.... as long as there are muslim extremesits who are prepared to fight the Western cultures, AQ won't die.

It's clear that AQ is currently not as big a threat as they were 2 or 3 years ago, but in the long-term this doesn't necessarily signal the death of AQ. The fact that AQ uses the whole planet as their "playground", and that muslim extremists are not going to go away (anymore than US extremists like Sixgun are going to go away) is something to consider.

I sincerely hope that AQ is a weak force for the rest of this century, but I doubt it will work out like that.

Keep in mind that the US hasn't just been hunting bin boy and AQ since 9/11. AQ happens to fall into the category called, "superterrorism", since it is an international terrorist business, and is set up like any major corporation, with bin hoy being the CEO.

AQ has cells, operatives, and sleeper agents all over the world, and simply having the focus be on bin boy in Central Asia isn't going to cut it. This war, just like any other, must be a collaborative and balanced effort between tactical and strategic assets. On top of that, we're dealing with a stateless front, which can easily gain members almost as easily as they lose them. They operate in the black, shadowy corners of the world, no matter what country. To effectively end AQ, it will take a lot more than just some A-Teams running around the desert. It will take the cooperation of state and federal-level law enforcement in every country, all working together, all on the same page. It's not going to be easy.

Like they said in the movie Speed, AQ is seated in the "Crazy, not stupid" section. They are incredibly smart and cunning, and have the ability to slip in and out of security almost anywhere in the world. Just look at the way bin Laden communicates, for instance. He rigs radioes to transmit from his unknown location to fixed-location satellite radioes, which serves as a middleman. The actual frequency he operates at is too often too low to pick up. Radio and GPS trackers can pick up where the satcom is, but they can't pick up where he is. I'm sorry if that wasn't exactly clear, I sometimes lack the proper vocabulary to explain things.

Also, think about this: Are there still Nazis on this earth? 60 years after WWII, there are still Nazis out there. You don't see them, and they may not be such a problem now, but they're still there.

You've got to understand that Al Qeada is everywhere... they may of lost the battle for Afghanistan but there are even bigger training grounds and and funds in other areas of Asia and Africa.

Recruitment for the group is no doubt almost tripled by now because of the war in Iraq which a lot of Muslims see as an attack on Islam.

They've only lost one battle in the global war.

So no I don't think the end of Al Qeada is near and I hope the world does not either........ Thinking like that is what will allow them to launch another large scale assault and to become even stronger.
