POKHARA, NEPAL - DECEMBER 13: Nepalese youths, vying to become part of the elite British 3,700-man Brigade of Gurkhas, make their way down a mountain after a grueling climb strapped with 77 pounds of rocks on their backs for the last day of the competition that will weed out the pool of aspiring soldiers December 13, 2002 in Pokhara, Nepal. Over 20,000 young men between the ages of 17-22 applied this year for 230 spots. After the first two rounds, the pool will narrow down to 1001 applicants. Those who succeed will become a part of the world's most legendary and perhaps most feared military force and have the chance to lift their families from the extreme poverty of this Himalayan region. Gurkhas are Nepalese living in the mountains, renowned as soldiers especially on behalf of Britain, and have fought in almost every conflict involving Britain or India over the past 150 years- Afghanistan, Kosovo, Palestine, Tibet, China, Pakistan and Iraq among others. Lately, some Gurkhas have been fighting for paid compensation on par with their British counterparts and have recently won the right to government compensation as former POWs. gurka is kind of badass vegetable

And seriously they are from Nepal... they were in british army since 18century or so they are very good soldiers and becouse of this they still serve in british army and also in indian army... it's a kind on british foreign legion but only gurkas are allowed so it is uninational unit :-) in the past they were famous becouse of their knives (kukrii) that was used in combat, now kukrii is used rather as a symbol of unit...

Had the pleasure of training with the Gurkhas when I was a young lad in Cadets. Played a game of Soccer with them, will never forget that. Tough tough little bastards, absolutely loved their job, always had a smile on their faces in the most miserable of conditions. Outstanding Infantrymen.

Umm..Not sure of the British Army but in the Indian Army Gurkhas are authorised to carry Khukri's. They use it extensively in CI operations and recently during the Kargil war Gurkhas put the Khukri's to let's say, good use ;)

Well I put it wrong. I had on mind that in the past it was PRIMARY weapon, now it is SECONDARY, after rifle... , of course it is still used, every army have combat knife and kukri is one of best... but I think that now they prefer using rifle in atack rather tha kukri ;)

Kukris are used extensively as a tool in the field. I have one specificially for camping myself. http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/LAND-FORCES/Army/Images/0181.jpg

People in Nepqal actually use and own them alot, not just the troops. It is a good tool.

Pretty good explainer here.

Good read Mark.

Not very different is the story (set variously in China, Italy, Burma and the North West Frontier) of the Gurkha coming suddenly on the enemy soldier. Naturally he struck first – the decapitating blow. “Yah, missed!” said the enemy. “Try shaking your head,” came the reply.

Finally a true story told by General Sir (later Field Marshal Viscount) W J Slim.

“Early in his command of 14th Army he encouraged constant patrolling by all forward units. One Gurkha patrol on return presented themselves before their General, proudly opened a large basket, lifted from it three gory Japanese heads, and laid them on his table. They then politely offered him for his dinner the freshly caught fish which filled the rest of the basket.”

I also have one I use for camping. I wish I could find a better scabbard though. It has a DPM cover, but the wood is all warped to hell.
