They have armour in somalia? I thought they were just a bunch of guys with AK47's and technicals.

I agree. I dont think Somalia has any organized armored units. maybe a few scattered APC's or IFV's, but few, and far between.

Probably back in the 60's when the Soviets were in SOmalia they did.

But now i dont think Somalia even has an organized military outside of Mogadishu. I know for a fact that the MOgadishu governemnt is very weak and has no control outside the city. THe country is run by various clans, gangs, and warlords.

Somali Technicals and AFV Photos

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/colonel.jpg

Technical based on a Toyota Land Cruiser High Top wagon with the roof cut off and a 14.5 mm gun.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/tankdr.jpg

Taken from the back deck of a T55, this picture gives a clear impression of the typical militia tank crewman

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/m113.jpg

An M-113 mounting a Soviet DShK machine-gun! This was the logistics and support vehicle for a platoon of three T55s belonging to the United Somali Congress

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/2techs.jpg

This photo shows two heavy technicals parked in the bush outside of a village called Balenbale in the SNF enclave about 20 kilometers from the Ethiopian frontier.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/zpu2.jpg

Another example of a heavy technical, once again based on a Pegaso lorry and mounting a ZPU-2.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/benz2.jpg

A different view of the Mercedes Benz heavy technical, showing the inside of the bed and the ZPU-2

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/tech3.jpg

Another view of the heavy technical based on the Pegaso lorry and mounting a twin AA gun

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/rover.jpg

Land Rover technical mounting a 106 mm RCL and Canadian Bison recovery vehicle.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/every.jpg

Part of the cantonment area at Balenbale, February 1993. This photo is very indicative of the diversity of equipment that was used in Somalia

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/toyota.jpg

This Toyota Land Cruiser with a 106 mm recoilless rifle mounted in the back was the only technical turned over to the Canadians by the USC forces.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/m47-1.jpg

Derelict M-47 tank which had been supplied to Siad Barre's army by the government of Italy.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/m47-2.jpg

This view shows the penetration in the turret of the M-47, just above the open machine gunner's hatch.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/sm47-3.jpg

This derelict M47 was abandoned near the main 'road' from Mataban to Balenbale

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/m47-4.jpg

Another view of the immobile M47 that fired on us as we entered Balenbale for the first time

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/m47-5.jpg

Another derelict M47 off the side of the main 'road' between Balenbale and Mataban

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/m47-6.jpg

A derelict M47 that we investigated while waiting for the engineers to clear a suspected minefield

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/cent-3.jpg

The Guri Ceel cantonment area was set up to hold the vehicles and equipment turned in by the USC

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/cent-1.jpg

Another view of a Centurion tank in the USC cantonment area

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/scent-2.jpg

The tank on the right is another Centurion in the tank graveyard that became the cantonment area for USC vehicles turned in to the Canadians

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/t55.jpg

The derelict condition of these particular tanks is instantly apparent, as is the unusual camouflage scheme on the T55 on the left.

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/saagun.jpg

This derelict large caliber AA gun was left sitting beside the main highway that ran into the Dhuusamarheeb

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/atg-1.jpg

This Chinese 100 mm antitank gun defends the northwestern flank of the village of Balenbale

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/105.jpg

This shows the cantonment area in Balenbale village prior to the arrival of the tanks and technicals from their positions outside the village

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/25tech.jpg

At the center of this photo, parked under the acacia tree and a bit hard to see because of the shadows, is a heavy technical built on a US manufactured 2.5 ton truck

http://membres.lycos.fr/France40/photos/guard.jpg

These four soldiers were the escort detachment for the 'Colonel' commanding the Guri Ceel sector

I think Mititia, Rebells, Soldiers or whatever they are, aren't supposed to be sympathic and cool.
But you are right, heavily armed Junkies are not cool.
