View Full Version : Miniguns on HUMVEES?

As we all know, miniguns use electric motors. Where does this power come from? Is there a small generator simply placed in the back of the vehicle? Does it hook to the battery under the passenger seat with a slave power cable? Wouldn't that get in the way? As well as drain the fvck out of the battery? Do they have a self-contained power supply built into the weapon itself, like one of those powerful-but-heavy and extremely toxic ones? Nickel-Cadmium batteries, I think? I dunno, power and batteries isn't really my area. Still, I wonder where these things get their juice.

If they are able to put 10 plasma screens, and a 5000 watt audio video system in a car, why not one of these toys.
My guess is that you fire bursts with it, so if there are a couple of normal car batteries combined with capacitors, that should do the job easily. The ammo will be decreased to zero faster than the batteries are empty.

It's probably slaved to the DC generator/battery in the HMMWV. I wouldn't think it would use that much power, but I don't really know the system.

While we have not been fielded ours yet, they are supposed to plug into the existing power system on the hummers. Everything we need to run them is supposed to be in the fielding.

They are both under the TC's seat (front passenger's seat). You cannot see them unless you remove the seat.

Why use a 7.62 mm minigun? I mean i think its awesome but certainly the 50 cal M2 is better by far??

Rate of fire is ALOT higher on a minigun. Consider it as "quantity vs quality" but not quite. The M2 hits harder but not nearly as often.

the M134 7.62x51mm minigun uses a 24v 1HP GE Electric motor. RoF is insane.
Any1 see that segment on the minigun on the Military channel on cable sunday last?

Hmmmm, looks like it just plugs into the regular slave receptacle. Thanks. Must suck to be the passenger when you need to dismount in a hurry. I'm sure I'd get caught on that cable and fall flat on my face.

Naw, I'm sure its not just dangling around...It is probably ran down the side of the seat, up the roll bar, and then to the gun. It would be out of the way.

I would also say that this is the reason why rotary barrelled weapons are still not common on infantry vehicles. The ammo consumption of such a weapon means that you put a lot of rounds on target, but only on that target and immediate targets, and a control burst could still easily be 60 rounds. Ammo still weights the same amount, and even though its 7.62mm vs .50 BMG, I'm thinking you're still not cramming enough ammo in there for a whole lot of sustained fire if you're pumping out between 30 and 40 rounds a second.

Depending on what speed the thing is set to, you could easily get 30-40 rounds by holding the trigger down for all of a second after the close to second it takes the thing to spin up. I don't see how this is such a ridiculous idea seeing as a low setting for one of these things is 3,000 RPM, which is 50 rounds per second.

one of those on an RWS or CROWS could really make for a bad day for hadji. they hated having that big rws lookin at em from under an M2, a minigun would have a great psychological effect. not to mention the actual firepower in that monster.

Here is a link to the magazine used in the hmwwv minigun role - 3000 rnds and weighs 204.14 pnds full - Hmwwv are capable of carrying X 3 mags .

I guess I stand corrected, at least in the patrol category. 9000 rounds, if only 3 minutes of sustained fire, is likely enough for a limited mounted patrol. I would think for extended combat operations where resupply is not necessarily garuanteed that such a system would still not be immediately practical.

How widespread is this Minugun Humvee?
I mean is this beast permanent in any Units TO&E?
Or just field workshop?
First of all not all modern gatling guns are electric. Quite a few (Russian) guns are gas powered.
The main reason you only see gatling guns on vehicles is weight. The gun will weigh a lot because barrels are heavy, and the electric motor is heavy, and the power supply is heavy, and enough ammo to make carrying the thing is heavy.
9000 rounds, if only 3 minutes of sustained fire, is likely enough for a limited mounted patrol. I would think for extended combat operations where resupply is not necessarily garuanteed that such a system would still not be immediately practical.
Even with 6 barrels sustained fire for 3 minutes would probably melt the barrels. 1-2 second bursts are more likely.
Even the 50 cal gatling in the nose of the old model Hind only carried about 25 seconds worth of ammo... something like 1,500 rounds of 12.7 x 108mm ammo.
The Ka-29 naval assault helo has a 4 barrel 30 calibre gatling in its nose with 1,800 rounds, which is enough for about 18 seconds of continuous firing (it fires at 6,000 rpm).
Both helos use it to hose down landing areas...
