Spain arrests five over bombings

Spanish authorities have arrested five suspects in connection with the Madrid blasts which killed 200 people.
They included three Moroccans and two Spaniards of "Hindu origin", Interior Minister Angel Acebes said.

The announcement comes as the first funerals for the 200 victims of the Madrid bombings have been taking place in the capital and across Spain.

Thousands of people have turned up at cemeteries, funeral homes and religious services to mourn those killed.

Earlier, hundreds of protesters held a noisy rally in Madrid accusing the government of manipulating facts about the attackers.

They told reporters the government had been trying to promote the theory that Eta was responsible for its own political advantage ahead of Sunday's general elections.

The BBC's Katya Adler in Madrid says government officials have considerably toned down their confident declarations immediately following Thursday's explosions that Eta was definitely to blame.

Tears of a nation

Meanwhile, the first funeral masses have been taking place in the capital and other cities.

In Alcala de Henares, the commuter town east of Madrid where the bombed trains had started their journeys, up to 1,000 people crammed into a gymnasium to remember some 30 local people killed.
"We have buried a son, 23 years old, a son full of his future," said one father dressed in black.

"We are all overwhelmed."

"Alcala is broken," said Mayor Bartolome Gonzalez.

In Tanatorio Sur, Madrid's biggest funeral home, lack of space meant coffins had to be placed in staff rooms.

Distraught families have been coming to sit in vigil.

"My son. Why?" one elderly woman sobbed.
The funerals will continue throughout the day, with the last in the Basque city of San Sebastian scheduled for early evening.

On Friday evening up to 11 million people turned out in heavy rain to protest against the violence in towns and cities across Spain.

Claim and counter-claim

Reports suggest the bombings bore many of the hallmarks of an Eta attack, and several apparent bombing attempts by Eta agents have recently been foiled.

And with elections due on Sunday, most Spanish politicians are still saying that Eta was to blame.

Mr Acebes insisted that, although investigators were keeping an open mind, Eta remained the prime suspects.
Basque media have denied that Eta was behind the blasts.

And the BBC's Chris Morris says Saturday's protest in Madrid shows Thursday's tragedy is rapidly becoming politicised.

The 2,000-strong protest was growing rapidly - with some scuffles between protesters and police.

Protesters accused the government of covering up facts indicating that al-Qaeda was involved.

A statement was sent to a London-based newspaper claimed that al-Qaeda was behind the bombings, and some Arab commentators in London said they believed it to be genuine.

Most recently, a radio station claimed to have been told that investigators are "99% certain" of involvement by Islamic militants by an unnamed intelligence source, but this has not been confirmed.

Until I read this article I thought signs were pointing towards a new breed of ETA, because recently there have been several instances of ETA terrorist in their early 20s threatening to do something like this, but also the US said there was no spike in chatter like there is normally when there is a al-Qaida attack.

But if the spannish authorities who were suggesting it was ETA, have arrested people that seem to suggest AQ then things have swung back the other way.

My wife is a Political Science lecturer, and her speciality is "political communication". I must say, this incident is a wonderful opportunity for various political parties to make sly comments blaming various parties, without ever coming close to the truth.

The National government in South Africa were brilliant at it.... mention a bomb blast and say that police found a Makorov pistol. This 1 single "fact" was enough to convince the average person that the commies/ANC were behind the attack.

Good example: national TV in South Africa reports a "terrorist attack" on a Durban night club, where a Makarov was found later by authorities.... in reality the "attack" consisted of 2 people throwing flahsbangs out the window of a stationary car ( my wife was in the car, the 2 guys throwing flashbangs were drunk SFs guys on "leave" from the Angola conflict).

I agree, but there was evidence from the Germany, the US and the UK suggesting it might be ETA rather than al-qaida.

Spain Holds 3 Moroccans, 2 Indians in Bomb Probe

MADRID (*******) - Three Moroccans and two Indians were arrested in Madrid as part of the investigation into train bombings that killed 200 people, Spain's Interior Minister Angel Acebes said on Saturday.
"Sixty hours after the brutal attack we now have five detentions," the minister told a news conference.

All the detentions were made "for presumed implication in the sale and falsification of the mobile phone and cards found in the bag that did not explode," Acebes said.

He was referring to a phone found in a backpack with unexploded explosives on one of the trains targeted in Thursday's attacks.

Also, two Spaniards of Indian origin were giving statements to police, he added. "This is an open investigation which is only just starting. At the moment, there is a search going on in various buildings and homes."

Acebes added: "It's the beginning of the investigation, but it opens an important path to advance down ... I give you this information with a lot of caution and prudence."

Acebes said some of those arrested may have links to Moroccan militants, but it was too early to say for sure.

this kind of thing brings up strong feelings, for people who were against the war this (should it proove to be al qaida) compounds it.

I think that the only responsable for the slaughter are the fuc*** terrorists, Why should we blame Aznar? Why should we blame anyone? the ones which took havoc and blood to the civilian population were terrorists. If they wanted to damage our society they may have done it by any means. If not Spain, then Italy,UK,Poland....Who knows?
Let's hope that the ones arrested today in Spain would lead to any clue.

typical of the liberal press, blame everyone except the terrorists themselves.

It was kind of hard to tell wich terrorists were to blame at that point, I think there is no doubt in peoples mind that the terrorists are to blame, but limiting your gaze too much to what is right infront of you, is a problem of the neo-cons.

It seems some of the arrested are already on the street.
After all they were only suspects of forgery and pirating of phone cards, and cell phones.

Only the moroccans have been identified (from Tanger and Tetuan), not the indians.
