PETALING JAYA: For four years, the staff at Vita Berapi (M) Sdn Bhd have toiled at research and development.
But they will enjoy the fruits of their labour soon: The little-known Malaysian company is all set to produce the first made-in-Malaysia range of firearms.
Vita Berapi managing director Syed Yusoff Syed Abdullah said the company would open its first firearms manufacturing factory in Rawang by the end of the year.
He said the company hoped to supply its products to the Malaysian armed forces and other security forces.
"We have seven types of weapons, ranging from sidearms to rifles and even a pistol for sports.
"We believe that we can compete in the local and regional markets."
The company had spent much on research and development of its firearms, hiring designers from Belarus for the job.
Apart from the LP04 sports pistol, the company will also produce the Hicap Compact automatic pistol, LP01 combat pistol, LP01A automatic combat pistol (mini machine gun), LP02 sub machine gun, LP03 sub machine gun (modified), LP06 rifle and LP05 sniper rifle.
"The sports pistol was specially designed by a former Belarus shooting champion who is now the head of design at Vita Berapi. The pistol can hold up to five bullets at a time and is accurate up to 25 metres," Syed Yusoff said.
Vita Berapi’s pistol and combat pistol also have a range accuracy of 25 metres, while the automatic combat pistol’s accuracy goes up to 100 metres.
The range accuracy increases to 150 metres for both the submachine guns, while the accuracy for the rifle and sniper rifle is 600 metres and 2.5km respectively.
Ammunition for the firearms are 9mm calibre, with the exception of the rifle and sniper rifle, which use 5.56mm and 12.7mm calibre bullets respectively.
The rifles can be equipped with scopes and night vision sights, while the sniper rifle comes equipped with an optical sight.

what, the SAR-21?
SAR-21 is from Singapore, not Malaysia. Malaysia produces the Steyr AUG in license, but they are reportedly of poor quality.

I didnt say that the production went to Malaysia, I said they were license produced in Malaysia:
The export version became the AUG – “Armee Universal Gewehr” (Universal Army Assault Rifle). Remarkable success was achieved by licensing its production in Australia and Malaysia as well as by exports to Ireland, New Zealand, Tunis, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the US.

austrian AUG > aussie stg77 < Malaysian AUG XD
btw the SAR-21 does use sonic welding for its plastic parts so its pretty good a defence weapon , as for an assault weapon...oh well it has drawbacks:
propiatary magazines...WTF??? why cant they just use m16/ar15 mags??even the AUG has NATO stocks...maybe next time...maybe...
****ty fire selector switch...at the back??? LMAO!guess i have to pull the trigger very fast then XD
inability for quick barrel switching ...rthe AUG has it , why dont you?
any FYI the malaysia army/military got a ****load of weapons stolen a wile back when some goons drove up and INTO a base armory WITHOUT any resistance...LMAO!

I dont quite understand... Australian F88 rated lower than the Austrian and Malaysian AUG? Because of the different safety?

Ermm... how does the used manufacturing technology contribute to it being a "defense" or "assault" weapon? Either it is rugged, or it isnt.

Why proprietary magazines? Simple, Polymer mags offer distinct advantages over the StanAg mags. Apart from that, the SAR-21 is also available with a StanAg compatible magwell. And the AUG has a non-StanAg polymer mag as well, but can be converted (as can be most non-compatible new rifles).

Why should it? The SAR-21 comes in different versions/lengths from the factory. Although quick barrel change is a nice gizmo, there is a reason why not many rifles have this feature: you rarely need it with a general issue weapon.

sorry about the wrong symbol...typing too fast
should have been austrian > aussie > malay
defence or assault that was my personal opinon , yours can always differ ^^
barrel change isnt a gizmo , its a godsend IMHO.
And the bullpup that i really wants is the FN F2000 :)

Najib: M4 was chosen after extensive tests
27 Apr 2006
Leslie Andres and Dennis Wong
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PETALING JAYA: The choice of the M4 carbine to replace the Steyr AUG A1 rifles may have come as a surprise to some because the M4 is generally used by special forces, not conventional forces.
But it was deemed the most appropriate as it was user-friendly and its innovative design allowed it to be fitted with accessories like laser status designators and grenade launchers.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak defended the choice.
"The M4 carbine was chosen after extensive tests proved its capabilities," he said at the Defence Services Asia 2006 exhibition in Subang yesterday.
He also presented a letter of intent (LoI) to SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd (SMEO) for the procurement of 14,000 rifles in a deal worth RM70 million.
SMEO had earlier signed a contract with Colt Defence LLC of the United States for transfer of technology to produce Colt weapons.
He said the 14,000 rifles were part of the first phase of replacing Steyr rifles, with the first batch being delivered from the US by the end of the year.
SMEO would eventually manufacture the rifles locally, with the Government requiring more than 100,000 weapons.
He said the RM70 million being spent also included accessories for the weapons. Najib also said the Government was disappointed that international insurer Lloyds’ of London had refused to lift the "war-risk" rating for the Straits of Malacca.
"We are very disappointed. Pirate attacks in the straits have been reduced and this rating is not justified," he said.
The joint war committee of Lloyds’ Market Association last year put the Straits on its list of 20 war-risk zones where ships are at risk from war, terrorism and related problems.
Najib also witnessed the signing of a contract for 10 Pilatus PC-7 Mk II turbo trainer aircraft, a flight training device, supplies and services for the Royal Malaysian Air Force with Pilatus Aircraft Ltd of Switzerland worth RM213.42 million.
The aircraft will complement the existing fleet of Mk II aircraft and eventually replace the Mk I trainers which are still in service.
Najib said the first batch of new PC-7 Mk II aircraft would be delivered in 16 months.
Meanwhile, Turkey wants to make Malaysia a manufacturing hub for military hardware.
Its undersecretary for defence industries, Murad Bakar, said yesterday his Government was working with the Defence Ministry on ideas for co-operation in the area.
He said his Government was impressed with Malaysia’s potential for manufacturing defence products.
"The level of technology in the defence industry is impressive and we are looking forward to forming strategic ties," he said.
DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (Deftech) is a partner of a Turkish company, FNSS.
The company produces FNSS’s ACV300 armoured vehicles for the Malaysian army.

26-04-2006: SME Ordnance in RM70m rifle deal
By Alfean Hardy
SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd has been given a letter of intent (LOI) by the Malaysian government for the supply of 14,000 Colt M4 Carbine assault rifles.
The contract, if finalised, would be worth about RM70 million and the rifles would be assembled under licence in Malaysia by the company.
The M4s will replace the army’s 15-year-old Steyr AUG rifles under provisions already made in the Ninth Malaysia plan (9MP). Eventually, the government is looking to buy more than 100,000 M4s, but in stages.
The LOI was among RM310.4 million worth of contracts and letters of acceptance (LOAs) signed at the Defence Services Asia 2006 exhibition in Subang on April 26.
The largest was the RM213.4 million contract signed between the government and Switzerland’s Pilatus Aircraft Ltd for 10 PC-7 Mk II aircraft. Other contracts include a five-year deal worth RM152 million between Satang Jaya Sdn Bhd and the government for safety and survival equipment, and a five-year contract between the government and Sapura Defence Sdn Bhd worth RM110.3 million for the maintenance of the air force’s simulator systems. The RM310.4 million does not cover the four long-term contracts signed between the government and Satang Jaya, Zetro Aerospace and Sapura Defence.

SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd has been appointed to supply and deliver 14,000 Colt M4 Carbines at an estimated cost of RM70 million.

Have you been eatin retard sandwiches or something? 70 million Malaysian ringgits= 19 million U.S. dollars. An M4/16 is one of the easiest rifles to field strip. I knew Marines who can strip an M16 under 8 seconds. Tools? What the hell are you talking about? :bash:

I think it was the widespread availability of easily obtained and affordable accessories that clinched that particular deal. The M4 is the tuner car of the weapons world.

depends on what sort of m4 u are talking about....the hk416 do strip nicely thou...and sorry me bad about the 90 million cuz i thought it was in US dollars not RINGITT...

and please chops, go conentrate your admin powers elsewhere cuz i have the honor of field stripping m4's, AUG A1,AK's and many other real stuff...i never said airsoft in any of my post here , (yeah maybe this one) so stop sterotyping me as an airsoft only person...thats discriminating to all airsoft users who happen to own a piece of the real action too...:fork:

To be honest, even though I love the AR platforms, I actually thought the Steyr Aug(Semi-auto) was a great shooter, granted this was from a bench, but I was amazed at my 10rnd group at 50yrds.
