Double suicide bombing at ashdod port kills eight people
By JPOST.COM STAFF
At least eight people were killed Sunday in an apparent double suicide bombing at the Ashdod port.
Magen David Adom reported that 16 people were wounded in the explosion, two of which were in serious condition.
Spokesman for Barzilai Hospital said that the hospital had received two lightly injured people in the explosion.
IAF helicopters landed at the port in order to help to evacuate the wounded.
Police initially believed that the explosions were set off accidentally in a workshop in the port.
Two additional bodies at the scene were those of suicide bombers, authorities said.
Channel Ten reported that one of the bombings took place inside the port next to the Ne'eman factory and the second bombing occurred outside the port.
The mayor of Ashdod told Israel Radio that the blast was most probably caused by two suicide bombers.
Israel Radio initially reported that the blast was caused by a gas tank that exploded.
Ashdod is one of Israel's two largest ports.

Latest report...
Eleven killed in double suicide bombing at Ashdod Port
By MARGOT DUDKEVITCH AND MATTHEW GUTMAN
Eleven people were killed Sunday in a double suicide bombing at Ashdod Port. The bombers, dispatched in a joint operation by Hamas and Fatah, apparently planned to launch a mega-attack and blow up near dangerous materials stored at the port, security officials said.
The bombs destroyed the bodies of the bombers and totally demolished the factory where one man exploded. Southern region police chief Moshe Kardi told reporters that the explosives used were unusual, and one security official told the Jerusalem Post that the type used was similar that in the Mike's Place bombing last April.
Hamas' military wing Iz a Din al-Kassam and Fatah claimed joint responsibility for the bombings on Hizbullah's Al-Manar television in Lebanon. Their joint statement named the two perpetrators as Nabil Masud and Muhamed Salem, both 17, from the Jabaliyah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. The statement says the operation was in retaliation for "recent Israeli massacres in Gaza and Jenin."
Ashdod's is one of Israel's two largest ports.
The blasts were heard around the busy hour of 5 p.m.. The first bomber blew himself up inside the port, police said, and the second bombing took place four minutes later outside the facility. The first bomber asked a young boy where he could get a glass of water. The boy, whose father was reportedly killed in the attack, pointed towards a structure, where the bomber then exploded. Rescue services spokesman Yerucham Mendola said "some of the victims were thrown a long distance" by the blasts.
Port worker Sami Pinto said that he saw smoke from the explosions. "Five bodies of our workers were lying there and two more bodies outside the fence," Pinto told Army Radio. Witnesses pointed out olive trees blown apart along the boulevard outside the port, attesting to the strength of the blast.
"They found a weak point and they exploited it," Infrastructure Minister Yosef Paritzky said of Sunday's assailants. "A port, by nature, is a very busy place," he said. "There are many people coming and going. It is impossible to seal the entire country hermetically."
Head of the Ashdod Ports Authority Shaul Rotem denied that the attack pointed to a serious foul-up in the guarding of the complex. "The damage could have been far worse," he said. "The port is guarded and operates according to Israel Police directives. We don't know how the terrorist entered the port... it's not hard to jump over the security fence."
A year ago a review of security procedures at the port recommended changes, Channel 2 reported, but the police did not implement the recommendations, apparently due to budgetary constraints.
Security officials have warned in recent weeks that Palestinians would begin to aim suicide attacks in the south as the security fence gets built first in the north.

Yes , exactly from Jebalia camp in Gaza strip . Until now , the security fence stoped them pretty well , but not this time . Last bigest Anti terror operation "defence shield" passed those places , and concentrated on west bank . I think it's a time to clean some houses in Gaza strip . The terror will fall down .

That's what the IDF is going to try and find out, sadly the fence is not fool proof...

Jenin was a shame . We let international opinion to kill our soldiers , and then we got the **** in our ass by the same international opinion , saying about the great Jenin massacre , human tragity , and slaughtering twice of all Jenin inhibitats .
The war always will have losses . Tradegy from the begining of human kind . But if this war makes people sleep at night , and don't worry , so be it . Gaza will be a tough nut to crack , and a hard challenge , but we crack this bitch up , like it ain't no sweat .

Well if Sharon orders the clean-up, hopefully more artillerey and Air Force will come into play, before infantry enters.
